If you’re considering solar from Octopus, it’s worth reading this first.
We purchased a solar and battery storage system from Octopus, installed on 7–8 April. Unfortunately, the experience has been consistently poor from start to finish.
Octopus forgot to fit the bird mesh, meaning the scaffolding had to remain up for an extra two weeks while they returned to complete the job. During the installation, two damaged panels were discovered and replaced, but the damaged panels were left outside our house and only collected after we chased multiple times. The same happened with a pallet of rubbish left on our drive.
The electrician also failed to connect the gateway to our internet, leaving the system incomplete. When another engineer arrived two weeks later, we discovered the original installation had not been completed correctly and had to be fixed.
We were told that once the installation was complete, we would need to wait up to 30 days for MPAN approval from the District Network Operator, after which we would be moved onto the Octopus Flex tariff so we could be paid for exported energy and allow Octopus to optimise our battery charging and discharging.
As of 21 May, we still have not been switched to the tariff.
We have called and emailed repeatedly for updates and have received multiple promises of callbacks, emails, and confirmed switch dates — none of which were honoured. Voicemails and emails were often ignored entirely.
On 7 May we raised an official complaint and were told we would receive a response within 10 working days. On 21 May we finally received an email containing yet more promises, but after so many broken commitments we no longer trust them. To make matters worse, the person we complained about was assigned to handle the complaint.
We have spent a huge amount of time and effort chasing Octopus to deliver the basic service we paid for, while exporting electricity to them for free since 8 April. Their proposed resolution was £70 compensation, which falls far short of reflecting the time, inconvenience, and ongoing issues.
For a company that markets itself on customer service, this simply is not good enough.
Update: 23/5 Octopus have finally switched us……onto the wrong tariff.
Update: Octopus have been in touch (see below) but it took 44 days from the install to getting put onto an export tariff. That’s nearly 50% longer than we were originally told. And it’s still the wrong tariff. We were originally put onto Outgoing Octopus, then we’ve been moved to Octopus Flux. However the tariff we requested was Intelligent Octopus Flux.
