Summary

The README had drifted from the code. This updates it to match:

  • Tool count: 56 → 79 (counted from @mcp.tool in gimp_mcp_server.py). Added the 16 undocumented tools to the tables, including new Batch & Multi-Format Export, History, and Connection & Raw API sections:
    undo, redo, save_xcf, set_active_image, convert_color_mode, crop_to_selection, warp_region, batch_export, batch_resize, export_web_optimized, export_icon_sizes, export_social_media_kit, export_sprite_sheet, check_server, restart_server, call_api
  • Test count: 56 → 58 (run_tests.py); listed the regression tests under tests/
  • Python: 3.8+ → 3.11+ to match requires-python in pyproject.toml
  • Troubleshooting: menu path corrected to Tools > MCP > Start MCP Server
  • Future Enhancements: removed "Undo System" since undo/redo already exist

Not addressed

pyproject.toml declares license = "MIT" while LICENSE and the README badge are GPLv3. That needs a maintainer decision, so I left it alone.

    • Added two test-script entries and updated troubleshooting guidance to include the GIMP Tools > MCP submenu.
    • Removed Undo System from the Future Enhancements list.

Add blank lines before the new tables.

markdownlint-cli2 reports MD058 at these lines because each table follows its heading without a blank line. Add one blank line after each new section heading.

Match the documented test total to run_tests.py.

run_tests.py counts 58 t() calls plus the select_color_nonempty chk() call. A clean run therefore prints 59/59 PASSED, not 58/58. Update both documented totals, or stop counting the extra check. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not claim that this suite verifies all tools.

The runner exercises only a subset of the catalog. It does not call tools such as convert_color_mode, crop_to_selection, or warp_region. Replace “verify all tools work” with “verify selected tools,” or expand the runner. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Thanks, this is a careful update. I checked it against the code: the 79 tools (@mcp.tool count, and all 16 new entries exist), Python 3.11+ (requires-python), and the Tools > MCP menu path are all correct. Leaving the license mismatch alone is right; that's #49.

One thing to fix before merging: the README now presents some tools as working when they're known to fail on GIMP 3.2:

  • undo / redo crash (#42). #53 found that GIMP 3.2 gives plug-ins no way to undo/redo at all.
  • set_active_image / close_image crash (#51; fixes pending in #52 / #63).
  • export_sprite_sheet is broken (#64).

Suggestions:

  1. Keep the new tables, but mark these tools, e.g. "⚠️ broken on GIMP 3.2, see #42".
  2. Keep Undo System under Future Enhancements, since it's still a missing capability.
  3. "All GIMP 3.2 API breaks fixed and tested" overstates things; the test suite doesn't cover these tools. Maybe soften it, e.g. "most GIMP 3.2 API breaks fixed; see open issues".

Minor: the test count. 58 matches the t(...) calls in run_tests.py, but two contributors reported 59/59 on main (#62, #66), so some checks are counted at run time. A hard-coded number will keep drifting; consider "Expected: all PASSED" instead.

With the broken-tool marking in place, this is good to merge.

run_tests.py has 58 t() checks plus 1 chk() check and reports 59/59.
