Summary

I ran every MCP tool (79) and socket command (77) against a real 2638x3515 photo and judged each result by the pixels (export a PNG and diff it with Pillow), not by status: "success". That surfaced a group of tools that reported success while doing nothing, several that could not work on GIMP 3.2 at all, and one transport bug that killed the plug-in (and the GIMP session) under concurrency.

All fixes are in gimp-mcp-plugin.py / gimp_mcp_server.py; run_tests.py goes 60/60 and repo-wide ruff check . is clean.

Root causes fixed

  • GEGL filters never applied anything (sharpen, blur, denoise, apply_gaussian_blur/pixelate/emboss/vignette/noise, the drop-shadow blur). Four separate mistakes stacked up: the filter object was read from result.index(0) — that index is the PDB status, the filter is index(1); GEGL properties must be set on filter.get_config(), not on the filter; drawable.append_filter() was never called; and the merge procedure is gimp-drawable-merge-filters (plural). _apply_gegl_filter now follows the working sequence and raises if the filter is still attached after the merge.
  • Procedures that do not exist in 3.2 were looked up and silently skipped: gimp-levels-stretch (real name gimp-drawable-levels-stretch; the fallback ran an identity levels curve, so auto_levels was a guaranteed no-op), plug-in-gauss, plug-in-unsharp-mask, plug-in-iwarp, gimp-item-transform-rotate-default, gimp-drawable-merge-filter, file-*-save, ConvertDitherType.NO_DITHER, Gimp.Unit.PIXEL, ImageBaseType.RGBA, Gimp.get_displays(), Gimp.file_overwrite, gegl:linear-gradient.
  • export_image wrote PNG bytes for every format (jpeg/jpg/webp/tiff/bmp included) because file-*-save is gone and the code fell back to file-png-export while still reporting "format": "webp". Now maps to file-*-export, honours quality, and fails loudly on an unsupported format or an unwritten file.
  • Colours were wrong in both directions. Gegl.Color.new("rgb(10,20,30)") reads components as 0-1 linear floats → painted white; any name outside Gegl's small vocabulary (e.g. lightsteelblue) silently became cyan; and get_pixel_color returned linear floats as if they were sRGB (#808080 reported as [55,55,55], #ff8800 as [255,62,0]) while the exported PNG was correct. Colours are now parsed explicitly (CSS name table / hex / rgb() / hsl()) and the sRGB transfer function is applied when reading pixels — every form now matches Pillow's ImageColor exactly.
  • Concurrency killed the plug-in. Each command ran directly on its client thread, so two overlapping clients crashed the plug-in process and took the GIMP session with it. Commands are now marshalled onto the GLib main thread and serialised; a connection can pipeline commands (raw_decode per document) instead of blocking forever on a buffer that can never parse; client sockets get a timeout and are always closed; listen() backlog raised; restart_server no longer re-binds the listener out from under the accept thread; exec_and_get_results restores sys.stdout on exception; exporting a layer-less image is refused instead of segfaulting the file-png plug-in.
  • get_histogram returned the PDB status as mean (so mean was always 3) and shifted every other field; the values start at index(1).
  • Tools that lied about empty work: crop_to_selection / select_by_color / warp_region returned success on an empty selection or a swallowed error; fill_selection always failed because the server sends color: null and params.get("color", "white") then yields None; batch_resize with no size "resized" every open image to its current size; save_xcf reported success for a path it never wrote; merge_visible_layers crashed on the NULL return.
  • Silent fallbacks that corrupt caller intent: an unknown selection operation fell back to REPLACE (wiping the caller's existing selection), unknown blend_mode/interpolation/anchor/color_mode/desaturate mode/hue color_range/color_balance range/histogram channel/gradient_type each took a default; adjust_curves accepted an odd number of points and out-of-range values. All of these now return an error listing the supported values.
  • get_image_bitmap ignored image_index — so get_state_snapshot(image_index=N) always snapshotted images[0] — and ignored max_width/max_height when only one of them was given, silently returning a full-resolution image.
  • Metadata was wrong: is_group was True for every layer (hasattr(layer, 'get_children') is always true), layer_type was a <bound method type ...> string, resolution_x/y were always None (get_resolution() returns (bool, x, y), so the two-name unpack always raised), and basic lacked the documented color_mode/num_layers.
  • Tools that could not work at all: undo/redo (GIMP 3.2 removed the undo procedure — they raised AttributeError; now they return an explanatory error and the docstrings say so), set_active_image / close_image (non-existent Gimp.get_displays()), edit_text (Gimp.Unit.PIXEL, a str passed where GimpFont is required, and it mutated the text before failing so the layer became unaddressable), export_sprite_sheet (ImageBaseType.RGBA).
  • gradient_fill painted through a non-existent GEGL op via a hand-built graph that tripped gimp_drawable_merge_shadow_buffer assertions, and leaked one gradient object into GIMP's global gradient list per call (measured 77 -> 90 after a few calls). Now uses gimp-drawable-edit-gradient-fill with a temporary two-stop gradient that is deleted afterwards.

Behaviour changes worth reviewing

  • rotate_image with an arbitrary angle now rotates each layer about the image centre and grows the canvas to the rotated bounding box, instead of transforming with radians (a no-op), flattening the layer stack and cropping the corners. It no longer flattens.
  • resize_canvas(fill=...) adds a coloured bottom layer rather than flattening the image.
  • Unknown enum/mode strings are errors instead of defaults — stricter, but they were previously painting the wrong thing silently.
  • The MCP server socket timeout went from 10 s to 120 s (override with GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT); a full-resolution bitmap round trip on a 2638x3515 photo blew the old limit.
  • new_canvas / open_image treat a missing window as non-fatal and report display_opened truthfully (headless / batch GIMP used to fail the whole operation after the image was already created).

Test plan

  • python3 run_tests.py -> 60/60 (one fix needed there: fill_layer clears the selection, so fill_selection now re-creates one first)
  • ruff check . -> all checks passed
  • 8-phase harness driving all 79 tools / 77 socket commands, verifying effects from exported PNGs (colours vs Pillow's ImageColor, histogram stats, layer stacks, canvas sizes, file magic for png/jpeg/webp/tiff/bmp, selection bounds)
  • Full-resolution photo: auto_levels 326 ms, blur 151 ms, denoise 338 ms, apply_noise 654 ms, add_text, export_image, save_xcf — plug-in process alive throughout
  • 4 concurrent clients no longer kill the plug-in; pipelined and malformed requests answer with errors

Not verified / known limits

  • The GUI-with-window paths (display_opened: True, set_active_image raising a window) were only exercised in a headless gimp -i instance, where they degrade gracefully; a display-dependent check still needs a click in a GUI session.
  • get_image_bitmap(region=...) still borrows the clipboard and the image selection (that is how the copy/paste-based region crop is implemented).
  • denoise only has iterations to work with — gegl:noise-reduction in 3.2 exposes nothing else, so strength is a weak knob.

Tested against GIMP 3.2.6 on macOS.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Connection checks now report a disconnected status when GIMP does not confirm a successful response.
    • The connection timeout can be configured, with a default of 120 seconds.
  • Documentation

    • Updated GIMP 3.2 compatibility notes, including gradient-fill guidance and limitations around undo and redo.
    • Clarified tool guidance for layer selection and fallback behavior, layer ordering, fill operations, pixel-color sampling, and returned pixel and histogram data.
    • Added details about canvas naming, API call dispatch, and the smudge-tool implementation.

Every MCP tool (79) and socket command (77) was run against a real photo and
verified at the pixel level instead of trusting status:"success".

Plug-in:
- GEGL filters never applied anything: the filter was read from index(0) (that is
the PDB status), properties were set on the filter instead of its config,
drawable.append_filter() was missing, and the merge procedure is
  gimp-drawable-merge-filters. sharpen/blur/denoise/apply_* returned success with
  zero pixel change.
- auto_levels looked up gimp-levels-stretch (removed) and fell back to an identity
  levels curve; use gimp-drawable-levels-stretch.
- export_image wrote PNG bytes for every format because file-*-save is gone; map
to file-*-export, honour quality, and confirm the file was actually written.
- Colours: Gegl.Color.new() reads rgb(0-255) as linear floats (painting white) and
silently returns cyan for names it does not know; get_pixel reported linear
values as sRGB (#808080 read back as 55,55,55). Parse colours explicitly and
apply the sRGB transfer function when reading pixels.
- rotate_image used a removed procedure plus radians, then flattened the stack;
arbitrary angles now rotate each layer about the image centre and grow the
canvas. resize_canvas(fill=...) fills via a bottom layer instead of flattening.
- undo/redo: GIMP 3.2 exposes no undo procedure, so report that rather than raise
  AttributeError. set_active_image/close_image called the non-existent
  Gimp.get_displays(); edit_text used Gimp.Unit.PIXEL and passed a str where a
GimpFont is required; export_sprite_sheet used ImageBaseType.RGBA; convert to
  INDEXED used ConvertDitherType.NO_DITHER.
- gradient_fill painted through a non-existent gegl:linear-gradient and leaked one
gradient into the global list per call; use gimp-drawable-edit-gradient-fill and
  delete the temporary gradient.
- warp_region fell back to plug-in-iwarp and swallowed every error; a liquify move
  is now a smudge stroke.
- get_histogram returned the PDB status as "mean" and shifted the other fields;
crop_to_selection/select_by_color/fill_selection/warp returned success on an empty
  selection; unknown channel/mode/blend_mode/anchor/interpolation/color_mode
silently used a default (a bogus selection operation wiped the caller's
selection). Unknown values now error and list what is supported.
- metadata reported is_group True for every layer, a bound method as layer_type and
no resolution; fill_layer/zero-size stroke/merge_visible_layers edge cases fixed.
- Transport: commands are serialised onto the GLib main thread (concurrent clients
killed the plug-in process and the GIMP session with it), one connection can
pipeline commands, client sockets get a timeout and are always closed,
restart_server no longer re-binds the listener out from under the accept thread,
stdout is restored when exec raises, and exporting a layer-less image is refused
  instead of segfaulting file-png.
- new_canvas/open_image treated "no window" as a fatal error (batch/headless GIMP)
and reported display_opened as a hard-coded True; display_opened is now the truth
and a failed canvas build is cleaned up.

Server: socket timeout 10s -> 120s (overridable with GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT), since a
full-resolution bitmap/blur round trip on a 2638x3515 photo blew the old limit;
check_server no longer says connected:True when the plug-in answered with an
error; docstrings now match behaviour (stack order is 0 = top, "selected layer
else top layer", real histogram channels, 0-255 curve points, undo/redo
unavailable, get_pixel_color is per-layer and not composited).

Tests: run_tests.py re-creates the selection fill_selection needs because
fill_layer clears it; 60/60 pass. ruff clean.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to e88d0

The new configurable timeout does not stay in step with the plug-in's 300-second wait. A timed-out command can still modify the image after the client sees an error, which may cause confusing or duplicated edits. The histogram documentation can also mislead clients on high-bit-depth images, and the README color note remains inaccurate. These are bounded issues to fix or accept before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to e88d0

Normal command execution gains useful serialization, but timeout recovery can leave queued work alive and allow a later request to execute more than once. This threatens edit integrity and recovery within the connected GIMP session. No new remote-access or privilege-escalation path was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Queued commands lack a terminal timeout state and immutable request ownership. If the main loop remains blocked beyond 300 seconds, the handler reports an error without removing the pending callback. For a persistent client that then supplies request B before recovery, the callback created for request A reads the reassigned request variable and can execute B alongside B's own callback. This can duplicate a non-idempotent edit such as rotation. The merge base executed the parsed request directly and did not have this deferred identity hazard. Normal sequencing prevents it unless the wait expires, and the default MCP socket timeout limits the ordinary client path, but longer configured timeouts and direct persistent clients remain affected.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated lifecycle risk affects commands executed by one GIMP plug-in process and the images they mutate. Existing unrestricted Python execution also gives authorized command senders the plug-in process's effective permissions. The inspected change does not establish a new tenant, service, or privilege boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected loopback command path dispatches caller-supplied expressions or statements to unrestricted eval or exec. That authority already existed at the merge base. Accepting the documented pyGObject-eval alias therefore corrects dispatch behavior without establishing a new code-execution privilege.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The server disconnects in send_command's finally block and does not automatically retry. Client-side timeout already could precede completion at the base; the new concern is the additional deferred callback lifecycle and mutable request capture, not a claim that this PR first introduced ambiguous mutation outcomes.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give queued work an immutable request payload and explicit pending, running, completed, and cancelled states. Cancel work that has not started when its wait expires; distinguish an unknown outcome for work already running so callers do not interpret transport failure as safe permission to repeat a mutation.

GEGL Gegl.Color.new numeric rgb parser unknown color name warning transparent cyan GIMP 3.2 source gegl-color.c

💡 Result:

`Gegl.Color.new()` takes a **color string**, not separate numeric RGB arguments. For GEGL’s numeric syntax, use normalized floating-point channels, e.g. `Gegl.Color.new("rgb(1.0, 0.0, 0.0)")` for red. The `gegl-color.c` source serializes colors in that `rgb(...)` form; for actual channel values, use setters such as `set_rgba()` instead. ([lists.gnome.org](https://lists.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2018-November/msg06496.html))

If parsing fails—such as for an unrecognized color name—GEGL emits a warning and substitutes **transparent cyan**. That fallback is an error indicator, not a successful interpretation of the name. ([lists.gnome.org](https://lists.gnome.org/archives/commits-list/2018-November/msg06496.html))

The source cited here is GEGL’s `master` implementation, not a pinned GEGL revision bundled with a particular GIMP 3.2 build, so exact version-specific behavior remains unverified. ([github.com](https://github.com/GNOME/gegl/blob/master/gegl/property-types/gegl-color.c))

🌐 Web query:

official GIMP 3.2 GEGL dependency version and versioned gegl-color.c rgb parser behavior

💡 Result:

**GIMP 3.2’s official GEGL release is 0.4.68.** GIMP’s 3.2 release announcement lists GEGL 0.4.68 as an accompanying release; that identifies the paired release, not necessarily the GEGL version bundled in every third-party package. ([gimp.org](https://www.gimp.org/news/2026/03/14/gimp-3-2-released/))

For **GEGL 0.4.68**, the versioned [`gegl-color.c`](https://github.com/GNOME/gegl/blob/GEGL_0_4_68/gegl/property-types/gegl-color.c) parser handles `rgb(...)` as follows:

- It recognizes `rgb` case-insensitively and parses **three float arguments**.
- It assigns the parsed components the **linear RGBA float** format; `rgba(...)` parses four floats in the same format.
- The source does **not** show CSS-style percentage or 0–255 integer conversion for `rgb()`—it passes the parsed float values through.
- If parsing fails, it sets transparent cyan and emits a warning. ([github.com](https://github.com/GNOME/gegl/blob/GEGL_0_4_68/gegl/property-types/gegl-color.c))

That behavior is from the **GEGL 0.4.68 tag**, the release paired with GIMP 3.2.0—not a guarantee about later GEGL updates or every packaged GIMP build.

Correct the documented GEGL color parsing behavior.

GEGL 0.4.68 parses rgb() arguments as linear-float channel values without CSS 0–255 scaling. Therefore, rgb(100,200,50) produces out-of-range components. Unknown color names emit a warning and fall back to transparent cyan.

Tested commit 0cf04e5 with GIMP 3.2.6 on an Apple Silicon Mac.

run_tests.py passed 60/60. The plugin imported cleanly, pre-commit passed, and the histogram values were corrected in my test.

I found a remaining close_image problem. The command returned success, but the image was still present in list_images afterward. The current implementation removes the tracked display from display_of_image and then calls image.delete() without first deleting the display. With a display still attached, image.delete() did not remove the image in my setup. The narrower implementation in #52 removed the image correctly in the same setup.

Coordinate GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT with the plug-in timeout and cancel timed-out commands.

GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT defaults to 120 seconds. If an operation exceeds that time, send_command raises after the socket read times out and disconnects, while the plug-in can continue its queued or running command. The client can therefore see failure before a late edit completes.

If GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT is raised above 300 seconds, the plug-in still raises after its fixed 300-second wait, so the larger server timeout does not permit longer edits. Cancel queued callbacks, define handling for running callbacks, and coordinate both timeout values.

Correct the default insertion position.

gimp-mcp-plugin.py passes -1 directly to image.insert_layer. GIMP inserts it above the selected layer, or inside a selected layer group, not necessarily at the top. Tell callers to use 0 when they need the top of the stack. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document that the current brush controls the warp.

gimp-mcp-plugin.py sets brush hardness and size but does not select a round brush. Gimp.smudge uses the current brush, so a non-round brush can produce a different edit than this description promises. Select a known round brush or document the dependency. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Document the precision-dependent histogram scale.

The plug-in returns the GIMP histogram values unchanged. For 16-bit and floating-point drawables, GIMP 3.2.6 returns mean, std_dev, and median in the 0–1 range, not 0–255. Clients using this description can misinterpret those results by a factor of 255. Document both scales. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

#82 is now merged, and it overlaps with this PR. Could you rebase on main?

Plug-in (gimp-mcp-plugin.py): real conflicts. #82 added self.command_lock = threading.Lock() in __init__ and wraps the execute_command call in _handle_client with it. Your _run_on_main already makes commands run one at a time on the main loop, and it goes further than the lock, so it's fine to drop the lock. Keep display_of_image in __init__.

Server (gimp_mcp_server.py): watch out, git merges this cleanly but the result is wrong. #82 (with a7ca008) split the timeouts in connect(): 10 s for connecting, then settimeout(300) for reads. After an automatic merge, your GIMP_TIMEOUT ends up on the connect step only, and the hard-coded 300 still applies to reads. GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT would then silently stop affecting reads. What I'd suggest:

self.sock.settimeout(10) # connect: fail fast if GIMP isn't listening
self.sock.connect((self.host, self.port))
self.sock.settimeout(GIMP_TIMEOUT) # reads: long operations

Default timeout. Could GIMP_MCP_TIMEOUT default to 300 instead of 120? That matches main today and your own _MAIN_TIMEOUT = 300 in the plug-in. With 120, the server gives up while the plug-in is still waiting on the main loop. That's the timeout-then-retry case #82 was fixing, although your main-loop handoff makes it a lot less dangerous.

Thanks for the work on this, and to naveen42x for testing it on 3.2.6.
