Render the visible composite in get_image_bitmap and honour image_index - #68
_get_current_image_bitmap (behind get_image_bitmap and get_state_snapshot) has four problems on GIMP 3.2.6:
Region snapshots copy layers[0] regardless of visibility (get_image_bitmap only renders the top layer, not a flattened composite view #17). With an opaque red layer under a hidden blue one, the region snapshot is blue. The same path also runs select_rectangle / select_none on the user's image, which wipes their selection, and edit_copy overwrites the clipboard.
image_index is ignored. The plug-in always uses Gimp.get_images()[0], so get_state_snapshot(image_index=N) can show the wrong image. The server's get_image_bitmap tool has no image_index parameter, although README lists it.
With every layer hidden, the PNG export falls back to a hidden layer's pixels instead of failing.
Dead code:file-png-export in 3.2 has neither a drawable nor a drawables property, so both set_property calls fail silently.
Fix
Region and full image:Gimp.Layer.new_from_visible renders the visible composite into a temporary image the size of the region (or of the whole image), which is then scaled if needed and exported. Visibility, blend modes, groups and layer filters are respected, a region equals the same rectangle of the full snapshot even when a filter such as a blur crosses its edge, only one layer is copied instead of the whole document, and the user's selection and clipboard are not touched.
Image choice:self._get_image(image_index). A value that is not a non-negative integer is rejected: -1 because _get_image would return images[-1], -0.5 because int() would turn it into 0. The server tool gains image_index: int = 0.
Temporary images: a new image goes first in Gimp.get_images(), so the temporary image would shift every image_index while a snapshot runs. It carries a gimp-mcp-temp parasite, and _get_image, list_images and the other tools that enumerate images skip it.
No visible layer: return an error. Layer groups count only when they contain a visible layer.
Cleanup: the temporary image is deleted in a single finally, also when scaling fails.
Scaling: the computed side is at least 1 px, so a 1×1000 image fits 50×50 as 1×50 instead of failing on a zero width.
GIMP_MCP_PROTOCOL.md documents image_index and the visible-composite behaviour.
This PR only touches the bitmap path. If one of those lands first, I will rebase onto it and drop the duplicated part.
Testing
Tested live on GIMP 3.2.6 / Windows 11, using a 200×200 image with an opaque red layer under an opaque blue one:

Region and full snapshots with and without scaling also pass. After each call no temporary images are left in Gimp.get_images(), and a 30×40 selection set on the image before a region snapshot is unchanged after it.
After the CodeRabbit review, a second test image (white background, black square with a live Gaussian blur filter, hidden red layer on top), each region compared pixel by pixel with the same rectangle of the full snapshot:

skipped by get_image_bitmap and list_images
On a 1024×1536 photo with 11 layers and no filters, region snapshots are pixel-identical to the previous commit, and a snapshot scaled to 512 px takes 1.2 s instead of 2.2 s. No temporary image is left in Gimp.get_images() after these calls.
ruff check with the pinned pre-commit version (v0.15.11) passes.
Region snapshots copied layers[0] regardless of visibility, and changed
the user's selection and clipboard on the way. The region is now cropped
from a duplicate of the image, so the PNG export flattens the visible
layers and the original image is not touched.
- Use image_index from the request instead of always images[0]; reject
negative values. The server's get_image_bitmap tool gains the
image_index parameter that README already documents.
- Return an error when no layer is visible (layer groups are checked
recursively); the export used to fall back to a hidden layer.
- Delete the temporary images in a single finally block, also when
scaling fails.
- Drop the drawable/drawables export properties: file-png-export in
GIMP 3.2 has neither, so both calls failed silently.

Walkthrough
The bitmap request now selects an open image by index, checks index and visible-layer availability, and processes region captures from a duplicated and cropped image. The request defaults to index 0. Temporary images and files are cleaned up.

Summary
Image index request GIMP_MCP_PROTOCOL.md, gimp_mcp_server.py
The server accepts and sends image_index, defaulting to 0. The protocol describes image selection and visible-layer capture behavior.
Image selection and validation gimp-mcp-plugin.py
The plugin rejects negative or unavailable indexes and reports an error when the selected image has no visible layers, including groups without visible descendants.
Bitmap processing and cleanup gimp-mcp-plugin.py
The plugin validates region bounds, duplicates and crops the image for region captures, and tracks temporary images for cleanup. Temporary-file cleanup checks that the path exists before unlinking it.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 99287
Zero-sized regions return a processing error, and overlapping requests may briefly select the wrong image. Close or explicitly accept the indexing window before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 99287
The change stays within existing image-access authority and improves visible-content capture. A remaining concurrency gap can misdirect overlapping image operations, so temporary-image isolation needs attention.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Temporary renders are not fully isolated from concurrent image operations. Creation precedes marker attachment, so an overlapping positional lookup can include the render and resolve an index to the wrong document. Separately, the GEGL fallback bypasses filtering even after marking. This can misdirect mutations or close operations and undermine cross-request image ownership. Region and scaled captures already had related exposure at the base; the new full-image path extends the trigger to unscaled captures. Filtering after attachment and request-local cleanup reduce exposure, but do not establish atomic isolation. Actual GIMP request interleaving remains unvalidated.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The relevant asset scope
8000
is the open images within the connected GIMP instance. A concurrent index shift can affect another document in that instance, including an indexed close operation. The evidence does not establish cross-tenant or cross-service exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Honoring image_index expands this bitmap tool's target selection, but does not establish a new privilege gain: indexed image mutation and arbitrary Python execution already exist on the same plugin command surface. Integer validation and temporary-image filtering are target-selection controls, not per-image authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The server's socket timeout disconnects the client but supplies no cancellation command for an in-progress render. Ordinary completion can still reach local cleanup; forced shutdown, failed deletion, and runtime atomicity are not covered by a demonstrated recovery guarantee.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Serialize operations that expose or consume shared GIMP image state, and preserve resolved image handles through downstream operations, including the GEGL fallback. Stable image identifiers could additionally prevent positional retargeting between separate requests.

Explanation
Issue #17 requires get_image_bitmap to return the visible flattened composite for region requests. The PR replaces the top-layer copy path with Gimp.Layer.new_from_visible for full-image and region renders. The implementation preserves layer visibility, blend modes, groups, and filters, and it does not modify the user selection or clipboard. The reported tests include multilayer region cases and region-to-full-snapshot comparisons.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to the bitmap path. image_index selects the requested source image, temporary-image marking keeps image enumeration stable during rendering, cleanup supports the new temporary render, and protocol and server changes expose the bitmap behavior. The related image-list filtering prevents temporary snapshot images from appearing in tools that enumerate images. No unrelated feature change is established.

Duplicating the full image for each region request makes its cost scale with document size.
The region path duplicates the whole image and then crops the duplicate. The duplicate copies every layer and channel first, so a small region still pays for the full document. The merge base created a region-sized image for this path, so this cost is new in the PR. Transient memory use can be large for big multi-layer documents. The size of that cost depends on how GIMP copies layer pixel data, and that copy path was not fully confirmed.
Suggested direction
No safe localized edit is established. Restrict the duplicate to the requested region, or export the region from a region-sized image, so that small requests do not copy the full document. Preserve the selection and clipboard behavior the PR is fixing.

Fixed in f3a0306. The temporary image now carries a gimp-mcp-temp parasite, and _get_image, list_images and the other tools that enumerate images skip it, so a capture in progress no longer shifts image_index. Verified live: a new image does go first in Gimp.get_images(), and image_index=0 still resolves to the user's image.
A short window remains between Gimp.Image.new and attaching the parasite. Closing it means serializing commands across the plug-in's per-client threads, which is a broader change than this PR.
Address the CodeRabbit review of gimp-mcp#68:
- Render the region, or the full image, with Gimp.Layer.new_from_visible
into a temporary image of that size. Filters crossing the region edge
apply before the cut, so a region equals the same rectangle of the full
snapshot, and only one layer is copied instead of the whole document.
- Mark temporary images with a gimp-mcp-temp parasite and skip them when
resolving image_index and enumerating images: a new image goes first in
Gimp.get_images() and shifted every index while a snapshot ran.
- Reject an image_index that is not a non-negative integer; int() made
-0.5 a valid 0.
- Keep the scaled side at least 1 px, so a 1x1000 image fits 50x50.

Follow-up from the review (each region request duplicated the full image): fixed in f3a0306 as well. The region path no longer duplicates the image; it copies one layer, the visible composite, into a region-sized temporary image instead of every layer and channel.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Reject zero width or height in the region before rendering.
The type check allows 0 because it only rejects negative values. A region such as {"origin_x": 0, "origin_y": 0, "width": 0, "height": 10} passes the bounds check.
_render_visible then calls Gimp.Image.new(0, 10, ...), which GIMP rejects. If it returns None instead of raising, temp.attach_parasite fails with AttributeError. The except Exception handler then calls temp.delete() on None, which raises a second AttributeError and hides the original failure. The client gets "Processing error: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'delete'" instead of a region error.
Validate the dimensions with the other region checks:

Thanks for this, and for the thorough before/after testing. Rendering the visible composite with new_from_visible is the right fix for #17, and leaving the user's selection and clipboard alone is a real improvement over the copy/paste path. @naveen42x compared this PR with #66 on #65 and recommends keeping this one, and I agree. A few things before it can merge. Points 2–5 come from reading the code; I haven't run them in GIMP.
1. Reject empty regions (also raised by CodeRabbit and @naveen42x)
The bounds check only rejects regions that overflow the image, so width: 0 or height: 0 gets through. @naveen42x reproduced it: Gimp.Image.new fails with constructor returned NULL. Please require width >= 1 and height >= 1 next to the existing bounds check.
2. Keep the original's precision and colour profile (_render_visible, Gimp.Image.new(width, height, Gimp.ImageBaseType.RGB))
Every snapshot is now rendered into a new 8-bit sRGB RGB image. The old full-image path exported the original image directly, so this looks like a regression for 16-bit and 32-bit images and for images with a non-sRGB profile (Adobe RGB, ProPhoto). Their snapshots could lose precision or shift colour. Could you create the temporary image with the original's precision (Gimp.Image.new_with_precision) and copy its colour profile? Or, when there's no region and no scaling, export the original as before. Either way, a before/after check with a 16-bit image would settle it.
3. Validate scaling bounds max_width=0 / max_height=0 (and the same keys inside region) reach max_aspect_ratio = max_w / max_h. The resulting ZeroDivisionError isn't in the except (RuntimeError, AttributeError, OSError, ValueError) list, so the call fails with an uncaught error instead of returning status: error. Negative values go straight to final_image.scale(). Please reject anything below 1 up front.
4. "No visible layers" check has_visible() only looks at get_visible(). A visible layer at 0% opacity, or one positioned entirely off the canvas, still passes, so the snapshot returns a fully transparent PNG, the same silent wrong result the check is there to catch. Counting only layers with opacity > 0 would cover the common case. Off-canvas layers matter less to me.
5. Drop the temporary-image tagging from this PR (TEMP_IMAGE_PARASITE, _open_images())
One MCP server process sends requests one at a time (FastMCP runs the sync tools directly on its event loop), so a single client never sees the temporary image. The plug-in does run each connection on its own thread without a lock, so two clients connected at once could. But that race isn't specific to this PR. batch_export, export_web_optimized, the social media kit and the sprite sheet create untagged temporary images too, and concurrent commands can also interleave context and selection changes. I've opened #81 for that. A lock around execute_command would fix all of it in one place, so I'd rather handle it there than switch seven call sites to _open_images() here. Dropping it also keeps this PR to the bitmap path.
6. Port #66's regression test
Since we'll close #66 in favour of this PR, please bring over its focused composite test, so the original #17 case (top layer hidden, region snapshot) stays covered.
Smaller things, not blocking:
A small region of a large image renders the whole composite before cropping (8000×8000 is about 256 MB for a 64×64 region). That's fine for now, but worth a comment in _render_visible.
processing_applied.region_extracted recomputes the any(...) that region_requested already holds.
I ran the review cases live on GIMP 3.2.6 against 992878a.
U16 non-linear sRGB and Adobe RGB samples both returned U8 non-linear sRGB PNGs with no explicit profile. The sampled output stayed close, with a maximum per-channel difference of 0.0029. Appearance was close in these samples, but the original precision and profile were not retained.
max_height=0 and both bounds at zero return division by zero. max_width=0 triggers GIMP's out-of-range scaling error but returns success at the original 10×10 dimensions with scaled: true. Negative top-level values also return success without applying the requested bounds. Region negative values are already rejected, but region zero values show the same zero-bound behaviour. Rejecting every bound below 1 up front matches the live results.
A visible layer at 0% opacity returns success with a transparent pixel [0, 0, 0, 0]. A visible 100%-opacity 10×10 layer positioned at (20, 20) outside a 10×10 canvas also returns success with [0, 0, 0, 0].
Thanks @naveen42x, this is exactly what the review was missing. I'd only reasoned about points 2–4 from the code, so having them reproduced live on 3.2.6 makes them concrete for @yastman.
Two findings went beyond what I expected:
max_width=0 returning success with scaled: true at the original size is worse than the crash I predicted. A silent wrong result is harder to catch than an error, so rejecting every bound below 1 up front, including inside region, is clearly the right fix.
Measuring the colour difference (max 0.0029) is really helpful. It means point 2 is about keeping precision and the profile intact rather than a visible colour shift, which helps prioritise.
Really appreciate you taking this on as part of triage. Careful, measured reports like this make reviews much faster.

Fixes #17.
Problem
_get_current_image_bitmap(behindget_image_bitmapandget_state_snapshot) has four problems on GIMP 3.2.6:layers[0]regardless of visibility (get_image_bitmap only renders the top layer, not a flattened composite view #17). With an opaque red layer under a hidden blue one, the region snapshot is blue. The same path also runsselect_rectangle/select_noneon the user's image, which wipes their selection, andedit_copyoverwrites the clipboard.image_indexis ignored. The plug-in always usesGimp.get_images()[0], soget_state_snapshot(image_index=N)can show the wrong image. The server'sget_image_bitmaptool has noimage_indexparameter, although README lists it.file-png-exportin 3.2 has neither adrawablenor adrawablesproperty, so bothset_propertycalls fail silently.Fix
Gimp.Layer.new_from_visiblerenders the visible composite into a temporary image the size of the region (or of the whole image), which is then scaled if needed and exported. Visibility, blend modes, groups and layer filters are respected, a region equals the same rectangle of the full snapshot even when a filter such as a blur crosses its edge, only one layer is copied instead of the whole document, and the user's selection and clipboard are not touched.self._get_image(image_index). A value that is not a non-negative integer is rejected:-1because_get_imagewould returnimages[-1],-0.5becauseint()would turn it into0. The server tool gainsimage_index: int = 0.Gimp.get_images(), so the temporary image would shift everyimage_indexwhile a snapshot runs. It carries agimp-mcp-tempparasite, and_get_image,list_imagesand the other tools that enumerate images skip it.finally, also when scaling fails.GIMP_MCP_PROTOCOL.mddocumentsimage_indexand the visible-composite behaviour.Overlap with open PRs
Gimp.edit_copy_visible. That keeps the select/copy/paste path, so it still replaces the user's selection and clipboard, and it does not cover hidden-only images orimage_index.get_image_bitmaphonourimage_index, as part of larger changes. This PR only touches the bitmap path. If one of those lands first, I will rebase onto it and drop the duplicated part.
