Fix silent no-op GEGL filters, drop-shadow blur, real export formats and bitmap image_index on GIMP 3.2 - #62
On GIMP 3.2.6, several tools report success but leave the pixels or files wrong. run_tests.py passes 59/59 because it only checks status == "success".
Effects that change nothing:apply_noise, apply_vignette, apply_gaussian_blur, apply_pixelate, apply_emboss and denoise. _apply_gegl_filter took the PDB status (result.index(0)) as the filter, set properties on the filter instead of its config, and merged through gimp-drawable-merge-filter, which doesn't exist in 3.2. Every exception was swallowed.
blur / sharpen:plug-in-gauss and plug-in-unsharp-mask are gone in 3.2, so both fell back to that broken helper.
apply_drop_shadow: the shadow layer was created but never blurred.
export_image / batch_export / export_web_optimized: these used GIMP 2 file-*-save names, so every format fell back to PNG and .jpg files contained PNG bytes. export_web_optimized also always wrote image.jpg / image.png.
get_image_bitmap: it ignored image_index and always rendered images[0], so get_state_snapshot(image_index=N) showed the wrong image.
Fix
_apply_gegl_filter: now uses Gimp.DrawableFilter.new → get_config().set_property → update() → drawable.merge_filter. An unknown operation, unknown property or out-of-range value now returns an error instead of a false success.
vignette: softness clamped to [0, 1]; the tool's shape factor maps to GEGL's named circle / square
blur / sharpen: the existing gegl:gaussian-blur / gegl:unsharp-mask fallbacks now work through the fixed helper. The PDB path is kept for older GIMP.
Drop shadow: blurred with gegl:gaussian-blur when plug-in-gauss is missing. The layer is padded so the blur isn't clipped at its edges, using Gimp.Layer.resize explicitly because a copied text layer's own resize() has a different signature. The requested opacity is applied again afterwards.
Exports: they use the GIMP 3 file-{png,jpeg,webp,tiff}-export procedures with run-mode=NONINTERACTIVE and JPEG quality on a 0–1 scale. An unsupported format or a failed export now raises.
export_web_optimized: files are named after the source image, falling back to image_<index>.
This deliberately doesn't touch code covered by other open PRs: gradient fill and colours (#41), close_image (#52), histogram (#48), auto_levels (#60) and get_pixel_color (#55).
Behaviour changes worth noting:
Out-of-range filter values and unsupported export formats (e.g. bmp) now return errors. Before, they silently did nothing or wrote PNG.
The vignette shape float becomes a two-way choice between circle and square.
On 3.2 the drop-shadow blur strength is the GEGL std-dev (blur_radius), which isn't calibrated exactly to the old plug-in-gauss size.
Tests
run_tests.py now checks real effects:
decoded-pixel before/after comparisons for every fixed filter, plus blur and sharpen
drop-shadow edge alpha and opacity
file magic bytes for png/jpg exports, export_web_optimized and batch_export
per-image_index bitmap sizes
Run against GIMP 3.2.6 on Windows 11, using a headless gimp-console with the same harness before and after:
Plugin
Extended run_tests.py
before (upstream main)
84/98: all 14 new checks fail
this PR
98/98
I also checked each fixed filter visually on a test pattern. ruff check (0.15.11, the version pre-commit pins) passes. Only GIMP 3.2.6 was tested; the kept older-GIMP PDB branches weren't exercised.
…age_index on GIMP 3.2
Several tools returned success while leaving pixels or files wrong:
- _apply_gegl_filter: read the PDB status (result.index(0)) as the filter,
set properties on the filter instead of its config, and merged through
gimp-drawable-merge-filter, which does not exist in GIMP 3.2. Every error
was swallowed, so apply_noise, apply_vignette, apply_gaussian_blur,
apply_pixelate, apply_emboss and denoise were silent no-ops. Use
Gimp.DrawableFilter.new -> get_config().set_property -> update ->
merge_filter, and raise on an unknown operation or an unknown or
out-of-range property so callers return a real error.
- Property names: noise-hsv uses value/saturation/hue-distance; emboss takes
an integer depth and type="emboss"; vignette softness is clamped to [0, 1]
and the shape factor maps to GEGL's named shape.
- blur / sharpen: plug-in-gauss and plug-in-unsharp-mask are gone in 3.2;
their gegl:gaussian-blur / gegl:unsharp-mask fallbacks now work through
the fixed helper (the PDB path is kept for older GIMP).
- apply_drop_shadow: blur the shadow with gegl:gaussian-blur when
plug-in-gauss is missing, pad the layer so the blur is not clipped at its
bounds (using Gimp.Layer.resize so copied text layers work), and re-apply
the requested opacity afterwards.
- _export_to_path: map formats to the GIMP 3 file-*-export procedures. The
GIMP 2 file-*-save names fell back to PNG, so .jpg files contained PNG
bytes. Run non-interactively, pass JPEG quality as 0-1, and raise on an
unsupported format or a failed export. Fixes export_image, batch_export and
export_web_optimized.
- export_web_optimized: name files after the source image (the duplicate has
no file, so everything was written to image.jpg / image.png).
- get_image_bitmap: honour image_index instead of always rendering images[0].
run_tests.py now checks real effects, not just status == "success":
decoded-pixel before/after comparisons for every fixed filter, drop-shadow
edge alpha and opacity, file magic bytes for png/jpg/web/batch exports, and
per-index bitmap sizes. Against the previous plugin on GIMP 3.2.6 these new
checks fail 14 of 98; with this change 98/98 pass.

Walkthrough
The plugin now selects images by index, exports through format-specific GIMP procedures, and applies GEGL filters with validation. Drop-shadow blur includes layer padding and a GEGL fallback. Integration tests check image selection, export formats, pixel changes, and shadow output.
PNG, JPEG, WebP, and TIFF exports use format-specific procedures. Unsupported formats, missing procedures, and unsuccessful exports raise errors. Web export filenames use the source image basename. Tests check export signatures and paths.
GEGL filter handling and parameters gimp-mcp-plugin.py, run_tests.py
Filter application uses Gimp.DrawableFilter and raises errors for unavailable operations, unknown properties, out-of-range numeric values, and invalid choice values. Emboss, vignette, and noise parameters are adjusted. Tests check for pixel changes.
Drop-shadow blur gimp-mcp-plugin.py, run_tests.py
Drop-shadow blur pads the layer before filtering and uses GEGL Gaussian blur when plug-in-gauss is unavailable. Tests check shadow opacity and edge alpha.
Web export can replace the original image with a resized, re-encoded copy. Prevent that collision before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to ec699
Generated exports now use image-derived filenames, which may select existing JPEG or PNG assets without an explicit overwrite decision. This creates a bounded file-integrity risk. The change does not establish broader caller privileges, and filter validation becomes stricter.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Web export changes generated target identity without an overwrite or recovery policy. For example, an image associated with photo.xcf now selects photo.jpg and photo.png in the requested directory, potentially colliding with existing assets rather than the previous image basename fallback. Image duplication protects in-memory pixels, not existing disk targets. These paths are submitted noninteractively without an identity guard, backup, or restoration. Actual replacement depends on the installed exporter, so destructive overwrite remains an inferred risk rather than a verified outcome.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified integrity exposure concerns local export targets writable by the GIMP process. It does not establish new filesystem privileges: callers could already supply an explicit export file_path. The changed behavior is implicit target selection within output_dir.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Socket requests still enter the existing explicit command dispatcher. Changed filter paths retain operation selection in plugin code, while the helper adds validation before merging pixels. No new dispatch route exposes the helper's operation name and property dictionary directly.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Drop-shadow construction mutates the image before blur validation and ends its undo group on failure without explicitly removing the inserted layer. The new GEGL fallback can therefore fail after layer creation. The underlying lack of automatic rollback predates the PR; undo grouping is not evidence of transactional restoration.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define a non-clobber publication policy for generated export names, require an explicit decision for intentional replacement, and preserve existing files when a paired export fails. Protection should address actual target identity rather than relying only on a naming suffix.

GIMP 3.2's DrawableFilterConfig exposes GEGL enum properties (e.g.
gegl:emboss.type, gegl:vignette.shape) as GimpParamChoice string nicks, so
passing the nick is correct, but an unknown nick is silently ignored and the
previous value kept. Validate it with Gimp.Choice.is_valid and raise, in line
with the existing unknown-property and range checks.

Stop the web export from writing over the source image.
When output_dir is the source image's directory, a source named photo.jpg or photo.png gets the same target path as its export. _export_to_path runs the GIMP export procedure directly on that path, so the original file is replaced by a resized, re-encoded copy. The plugin has no check that prevents this and no restore step. Before this change, the basename was the constant image, so the collision only occurred for a source named image.jpg or image.png.
Compare each generated path with the source path, and add a suffix until neither target matches it:
