Thanks for building this — it's a genuinely useful bridge to GIMP. While using it on GIMP 3.2.4 I hit a few tools that crashed or silently produced wrong output. This PR fixes them. Root causes were GIMP 3.2 API changes and Gegl's linear-vs-sRGB color handling.

Fixes

  • Color handling (affects most drawing/fill tools). Gegl.Color.new("rgb(...)") and set_rgba() store components as linear, not sRGB — so rgb(255,190,216) clamped to white and rgb(1.0,...) came out washed-out. Only hex parses as sRGB. Added a _color() helper that accepts hex, named colors, rgb()/rgba(), or [r,g,b(,a)] lists (values read as 0-255 when any exceeds 1, else 0-1) and normalizes everything to an sRGB hex string. All ~20 color call sites route through it.
  • gradient_fill produced no output. The GEGL-graph path used normalized (0..1) coordinates, wrote to a shadow buffer, and ignored the active selection. Replaced with Gimp.Drawable.edit_gradient_fill, which respects the selection and writes correct sRGB pixels.
  • get_pixel_color returned wrong values. get_pixel().get_rgba() returns linear floats — an sRGB (255,223,237) pixel was reported as (255,188,216). Now reads the buffer as non-linear "R'G'B'A u8".
  • close_image crashed with AttributeError: 'Gimp' object has no attribute 'get_displays'. GIMP 3.2 has no Gimp.get_displays() / Display.get_image(), and image.delete() no-ops while a display is attached. Now tracks created displays in a registry keyed by image id and deletes the tracked display first.
  • undo/redo crashed with AttributeError: 'Image' object has no attribute 'undo'. GIMP 3.2 exposes no scriptable undo history; they now return a clear message instead.
  • No UI feedback on server start. The menu actions only printed to the console (invisible inside GIMP). Added Gimp.message() feedback (via a temporary MESSAGE_BOX handler) that reports the real bind outcome for Start, plus Restart and status.

CLAUDE.md is updated with the sRGB-vs-linear gotcha, since it caused most of the confusion.

Testing

  • Verified each fix live against GIMP 3.2.4 through the MCP tools (correct sRGB fills/reads, gradient respecting the selection, clean image close, graceful undo error, visible start dialog).
  • py_compile clean. ruff check introduces no new violation categories and net-reduces existing findings by 5 (removed some blind excepts / try-except-pass).

…ndo, server feedback

Several tools crashed or silently produced wrong output on GIMP 3.2. Root
causes were GIMP 3.2 API changes and Gegl's linear-vs-sRGB color handling.

- Colors: add a `_color()` helper accepting hex, named colors, `rgb()/rgba()`,
and `[r,g,b(,a)]` lists (0-255 or 0-1), normalizing to an sRGB hex string.
Raw `Gegl.Color.new("rgb(...)")` and `set_rgba()` store values as *linear*,
  so `rgb(255,190,216)` clamped to white and `rgb(1.0,...)` looked washed out;
only hex parses as sRGB. All ~20 color call sites now route through it.
- gradient_fill: replace the broken GEGL-graph path (normalized coords, wrote
to a shadow buffer, produced no visible output, ignored the selection) with
  `Gimp.Drawable.edit_gradient_fill`, which honours the selection.
- get_pixel_color: read the buffer as non-linear "R'G'B'A u8" instead of the
linear floats from `get_pixel().get_rgba()` (an sRGB (255,223,237) pixel was
  reported as (255,188,216)).
- close_image: GIMP 3.2 has no `Gimp.get_displays()`/`Display.get_image()`, so
track created displays in a registry keyed by image id and delete the tracked
display before `image.delete()` (which no-ops while a display is attached).
- undo/redo: GIMP 3.2 exposes no scriptable undo history; return a clear
message instead of crashing with AttributeError.
- Server start: menu actions only printed to the console. Add UI-visible
`Gimp.message()` feedback (via a temporary MESSAGE_BOX handler), reporting the
real bind outcome for Start, plus Restart and status.

Walkthrough

The plugin now restores GIMP message handlers after notification errors. The _color helper now scales alpha independently from RGB. The color-handling guidance documents supported formats, sRGB behavior, and alpha scaling.

_notify restores the previous message handler even when Gimp.message raises an exception.
Independent alpha normalization
gimp-mcp-plugin.py, CLAUDE.md
_color treats alpha values at or below 1 as 0–1 values and larger values as 0–255 values. The guidance documents supported color formats, RGB scaling, sRGB behavior, and equivalent 50% opacity examples.

- _color: scale alpha independently of RGB. CSS rgba() uses 0-255 for RGB but
0-1 for alpha, so rgba(255,0,0,0.5) was rounding alpha to 0 (fully
transparent). Alpha <= 1 is now read as 0-1, else as 0-255; both
  rgba(255,0,0,0.5) and rgba(255,0,0,128) give 50% opacity.
- _notify: restore the message handler in a finally block so a raising
Gimp.message() can't leave the handler stuck on MESSAGE_BOX.

Addressed both review comments in 1527c6f:

  • Alpha scaling (major): rgba(255,0,0,0.5) was rounding alpha to 0 (fully transparent) because RGB and alpha shared one 0-255/0-1 scale decision. Alpha is now scaled independently — <= 1 read as 0-1, otherwise as 0-255 — so both rgba(255,0,0,0.5) and rgba(255,0,0,128) give 50% opacity. CLAUDE.md updated to match.
  • _notify handler restore (minor): the message_set_handler(prev) restore now runs in a finally, so a raising Gimp.message() can't leave the handler stuck on MESSAGE_BOX.

Both verified, and ruff still introduces no new violation categories.
