I'm glad I'm not an actual client

I'm glad I'm not an actual client. I contacted square to resolve an issue of a nearly $8000 refund owed to me by one of their clients who uses them to process payments. After nearly two weeks of the refund being processed and the merchant giving me a screenshot so I know it was done, my credit card still doesn't show the refund, even as pending. They say square has to process on their end before it goes to my card issuer. So I contact square, give them the info, and then they tell me they can't pull it up in the system, despite me giving them all pertinent info. How convenient. What they are doing is keeping money to gain interest as long as they can get away with it. Oh- and they keep the processing fees on refunds too in case y'all didn't know. I'd NEVER use this company for anything!

We’re sorry to hear about this experience. Once a refund is initiated, it may appear as pending within 1–3 business days, but in some cases it can take up to 4–14 business days total for the funds to post, depending on the card-issuing bank’s processing timeline.

Since the merchant has already confirmed the refund was submitted, the most important next step is to dispute the charge or work directly with your card-issuing bank so they can locate the refund or review the transaction on their end, because the posting timeline ultimately depends on the issuer.

If your bank still cannot find the credit after reviewing it, ask the merchant to reconnect with Square Support and provide the refund confirmation details so the case can be investigated further.

Square Deactivated My Account of 12 Years Without Warning, Reason or Recourse!

I have been using Square for credit card processing since 2014. In times past, if they had a concern, they would reach out to give me a chance to address it. For instance, during COVID-19, my receptionist worked from home when quarantined, and she took credit card payments over the phone from my patients. Square questioned her location since she was using her phone (authorized by me to do so), and so I sent a utility bill to confirm the physical address for my business per their request. That was the end of that concern, and business continued as usual. Well today, all of the sudden, they say someone/something? (AI?) looked at my account and determined that I violated their terms. Thus, they unilaterally deactivated it! No warning! No explanation! No opportunity to address whatever concern they might have! Just in the middle of the work day, we suddenly were unable to take credit card payments. So I called to ask what the alleged problem was and what “violation” they claim to have found, because I am not knowledgeable of any term not being met. The rep looked at my account and stated she had no idea. She said my account did not have any comments on it, so nobody can explain how this mistake was made. But rather than fixing it, she “escalated” it to someone else, who of course won’t review it for several days, and thus, leaves me without a way to take credit card payments. So a longstanding customer with an excellent history with Square all of the sudden experiences this! Beware, as the same might happen to you!

Update: As of today (4 days later) I still have not had any response from Square regarding my inquiry. The only email they sent was the generic notice that they deactivated my account. And it appears they forgot how to use telephones, as email is not the best way to communicate when there is a problem, It appears they have “lost” my inquiry or are simply ghosting me.

Square is refusing to remove fraudulant accounts ...

We have had fake bank accounts listed in our Square account for the last year. Though we have repeatedly requested their removal, Square continues to refuse. Worse, the IRS is sending us notices because Square is giving them bad account information, presumably using these false pay accounts. Wasting many hours of work for us. Our real pay accounts are correct. Square is not using them. Square has no ticket system, do not trust a company that refuses to allow a papertrail. When you click on Support, you get a page not found. This sums up our issue. Phone reps are hard to understand and I travel extensively for this business.
August 2 update: After numerous attempts to remove the accounts through calls and chat, the fraud accounts are still in our account. I have submitted our company name and other details through Trustpilot. Square continues to say they cannot find our account so they can have this review removed. We use their pay portal, online store and payroll. We have had the account for a dozen years. We are switching to an honest provider. We would like fix Square before we go, for other users. If you are looking for payment processing and payroll, I suggest you keep looking.

If there were a way I could give ZERO…

If there were a way I could give ZERO OR MINUS FIVE, I would.
I don't recommend banking with Square for your business; they wouldn't protect your rights or your money. I said they would not; you're filing a dispute for a fraudulent transaction, or a customer filing a dispute for service provided and was paid for.
Here are 2 scenarios to show you they would not protect your money in either way.

1- Customer receives service, was pleased, but dishonestly claims after a month that the service was canceled
I run a mobile detailing business; we run ads on Meta, and we specifically tell our customers that they don't need to pay a deposit before their appointment; they pay only after the service is provided, and we send them a receipt and before-and-after pictures after payment is completed. I completed a job on June 11th, 2026. receipt and pictures were sent to the customer. Two days ago, on July 18th, 2026, over a month after the service, Square deducted $259.50 from my account for a dispute filed by the customer stating that the service was cancelled. I called Square and was told that the funds were being held awaiting review and resolution. I attached the communication with the customer, the receipt sent to the customer via Square, and the before-and-after pictures of the customer's vehicle. The Square App itself said, "The Card was presented". I called Square 2 times, two consecutive days, to make sure the dispute was being investigated. Both customer support agents reassured me Square would fight for my money, but this morning, July 22nd, 2026, Square sent me an email saying the customer's bank made the decision, and the money was refunded to the customer. My point of view is that my customer fights for their client's interests; I don't expect less from a bank; why should I use Square if they can't protect my interests? For a payment made after service is rendered, with the Square App showing that the card was present, with the pictures of the vehicle, how was it so difficult to prove that the "service was canceled as the customer claimed"?

2- I filed a dispute but did not get my money back.
On the 18th of July 2026, I tapped my card at a Shell gas station to refill my Tank; a $75 hold was placed as they normally do at many gas stations. I have a 2026 RAM 2500, so I ended up refilling for $113.92. Later, I went into the Square App and saw the 2 transactions were debited from my account: $75 and $113.92. I called Square and was told they can see there is a hold; the money will be returned in about an hour. I got busy the next days with work, and after 2 days, I see these transactions are still there. I called Square, and since the transactions were now both marked as completed on their side, the agent asked me to dispute the $75 transaction and guided me through filling out the dispute form, which has no place to explain the context of what happened but is full of questions such as "Was the transaction fraudulent, Yes or No?" "Do you have your card in your possession? Yes or No?" "When was the last time you used your card - Merchant name"
A few hours after submitting the dispute, I received a generic email saying that Square can't take action on my dispute.

Square does not do the due diligence of protecting your rights and your money; they don't even take the time to investigate anything. Don't do Square; there are many other banks out there.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I understand how frustrating both situations must be, and I want to provide some clarity and next steps.

Regarding your detailing customer's chargeback:

I'm sorry this happened. Your evidence sounds compelling — card-present transaction, photos, receipt, and communications. However, I want to be transparent: when a cardholder disputes a charge, Square submits your evidence to the customer's card-issuing bank, but the final decision is made by that bank, not Square. We advocate on your behalf, but cannot override their ruling.

That said, I'd encourage you to contact our Disputes team and ask whether a second presentment or appeal is possible in your case. You may also have the option of pursuing the matter through small claims court, as the chargeback decision doesn't prevent that.

Regarding the gas station hold:

Gas station pre-authorization holds typically drop off within a few business days without settling. If the $75 was truly charged (not just pending), I'd recommend calling back and asking for an escalation — explain this is a hold that incorrectly settled, not a fraud claim. That distinction matters and should lead to a different resolution path.

We take your concerns seriously and want to help make this right.

15 years loyalty & slapped in the face!

Been on Weebly for 15 years with multiple accounts. Square took it over and have changed a default link on log out and now I can't log into any of my weebly accounts because it defaults to square log in and not weebly log in. When I log into the Square platform none of the weebly websites load in any of my clients Square log ins. They said sometimes it just doesn't load, as if that's an acceptable response. I wrote to them to fix the glitch and they first said I just keep deleting all my cache and history or use different browsers for different clients and not log out of any. I told them that isn't practical and there aren't enough browsers to do that, then they said they would change the default link to stop that from happening. Then they didn't do it and still haven't and now have ignored all my correspondence. Square lies and then doesn't care. So they great unless unless you have a problem, then won't care about you or their own platform. I'm busy exploring new options and seems like Articulation might be a better option. Very disappointed. 15 years of loyalty with a massive slap in the face.

UPDATE ON SQUARES REPLY BELOW BECAUSE THERE IS NO OPTION TO RESPOND: Square already told me this. I have already done this several times and they still haven't helped me. They have my details. They have all my correspondence. They should fix the problem and contact me. I've literally got this several emails with this exact copy paste (or Ai) wording and then zero follow through. Just because they look sorry on reply, doesn't mean they actually solve problems. Sorry means you won't do it again and they've done it several times and now here it is again in this rubbish reply.

Hi, there — thank you for sharing this, and we're sorry for the frustration. Fifteen years is a long time, and your experience doesn't reflect the standard we hold ourselves to.

What you're describing with the login redirect and sites not loading in Square shouldn't be happening, and we understand how disruptive that is when you're managing multiple client accounts. You deserve a clear resolution, not workarounds.

We'd like to connect you with a specialist who can look into your specific accounts and get this sorted. Could you reach out to our support team with your account details? We'll make sure it gets the attention it needs.

We appreciate your patience and your loyalty — and we want to make this right.

We’re sorry to hear that our live chat support did not provide a satisfactory answer, and we appreciate you sharing this feedback. You are correct that offline payments must be uploaded within 72 hours from the start of the offline session, although uploading them within 24 hours is strongly recommended to help reduce the risk of declined cards or chargebacks. Please note that if your device does not reconnect to the internet and the payments are not uploaded within that time limit, expired offline payments cannot be recovered or processed again. If you’re not comfortable using Offline Mode, you can also keep this feature turned off in your settings so payments are only accepted when your device is connected to the internet. Thank you again for your feedback.

Square customer service assistance

On July 21, 2026, at approximately 8:30 a.m., I contacted Square Customer Support because the Square app kept crashing.

My experience was very disappointing for the following reasons:

1. The representative never verified my account or even confirmed that I was the account holder before attempting to troubleshoot the issue.
2. I was instructed to completely delete the app and set up my account from scratch, which would have been unnecessary and time-consuming.

The actual solution was much simpler. I had already mentioned that Square had been pushing an update over the weekend. All that was required was to open the App Store, tap Update, and the issue was resolved within seconds.

This experience raises serious concerns about the quality of Square’s customer support. If a representative could not identify such a basic issue and instead recommended a complete reinstallation, it makes me question the level of training and qualifications provided to their support staff.

It is also concerning to think about how more complex technical issues would be handled. Experiences like this make me wonder whether I should consider switching to a different POS system with more knowledgeable and reliable customer support.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I sincerely apologize for the frustration you encountered on July 21st and want to address your concerns directly.

Regarding account verification: For general troubleshooting — such as an app crashing — our representatives typically do not need to verify your identity or access account-specific information. Identity verification is reserved for situations involving sensitive account details, billing, or changes to your account. That said, I understand why it may have felt concerning in the moment, and I appreciate you raising it.

Regarding the troubleshooting guidance: You had already mentioned that an update had been pushed over the weekend, and our representative should have recognized that as the likely fix. Recommending a full reinstallation when a simple App Store update would resolve the issue was unnecessary, and I'm sorry for the time and frustration that caused.

We're using your feedback to reinforce training around active listening and prioritizing the simplest solutions first. Your trust in Square matters to us, and we're committed to delivering support that matches the quality of our platform.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything else I can help with.

Square refusing to pay me

Square is currently withholding approximately $18,600 of my business funds, which have been held for over six months. Despite contacting Square’s support team more than 100 times via phone, live chat, and email, I have been unable to obtain a clear resolution.

Throughout this process, I have received inconsistent information from different representatives. I have repeatedly been transferred between departments, provided with generic responses, or had conversations ended without any meaningful explanation or assistance.

Initially, I was informed that my funds would be released on April 12. When that did not occur, I was later told they would be released in June after my pending disputes were resolved. Those disputes have since been fully resolved, yet my funds continue to be withheld. Square has not provided a new release date or a clear explanation for the continued hold.

For more than six months, I have made every reasonable effort to resolve this matter directly with Square before considering any public or legal action. Unfortunately, customer support has been unable or unwilling to provide a definitive answer regarding my funds.

As a result, I am now pursuing legal counsel and exploring all available legal remedies to recover the funds that belong to my business. My preference remains to resolve this matter amicably, but I am prepared to take the necessary legal steps if a resolution cannot be reached.

Hannah saved a 1 star review

If I could leave zero stars, I would. This bank has been a complete nightmare to deal with and severely mishandled my accounts to the point where their actions bordered on violating federal banking regulations.

It took me many calls just to get an advanced customer service representative on the phone to address a critical issue for us. While that one representative, Hannah, did a great job and completely turned the situation arround. However my many experiences with the support centers and ai assistant were never helpful and took 20+ hours over the last 6 months on hold. Most times I could not understand them due to an accent and when I did I was getting stock answers but not specific to my answers. the virtual support was the same, not understanding more than basic questions. If it wa not for Hannah, I would have only left a 1 star review!

If I could leave zero stars, I would. This bank has been a complete nightmare to deal with and severely mishandled my accounts to the point where their actions bordered on violating federal banking regulations.

It took me over five weeks of fighting just to get an advanced customer service representative on the phone to address a critical issue. While that one representative finally did her job and stopped me from walking straight to a lawyer to file a lawsuit, the damage was already done. The incompetence, delays, and utter disregard for their customers' financial livelihoods are staggering. Avoid this institution at all cost, they owe me for the stress and damages caused by their negligence.
