I am not an idiot and canceled my account. They claim I paused it and they resumed charging me after a month. Three payments went through before I realised - perhaps I am an idiot. I didn't use the account at all in that time but they refused a refund - it's their "policy" - barring the last payment which I caught within 2 days.

I was using Descript for transcription. There are many better and more flexible services out there.

I used Descript for years for captioning but I very much dislike the fact how you up your prices. It's been done once already when I started paying practically a double for no particular reason. Now you force users to upgrade again because since the day before yesterday it's no longer possible to export files in 1080p unless you switch the plan for a considerably more expensive one. I pay 24$ per month for my subscription but since a few days ago I can only export files in 720p resolution. If I need 1080p or above I have to switch to the plan for 35$/month. And I only use descript for captions. Will be looking now for an alternative. Because that's too much.

I was charged for an annual renewal even though I hadn't used Descript since 2023. As soon as I noticed the charge, I contacted support and provided all the information they requested, expecting my case to be reviewed fairly.

Instead, after asking for details and making me go through the process, they simply replied with a generic copy-and-paste message quoting their refund policy. There was no real consideration of the fact that my account had been inactive for years or any willingness to make a reasonable exception.

Good customer service isn't about hiding behind policies—it's about treating customers like people. This experience left me feeling that customer loyalty and fairness don't matter.

Very disappointing. I won't be using or recommending this service.

I don’t understand how this software can be the best and yet the WORST software available. If all the features *actually* worked seamlessly, it would be awesome (and in many ways it is so I still use it *sigh*) But there are SO MANY glitches in the system that can be incredibly frustrating. I have to restart the app all the time in order to get basic functions to reset and work properly. Transitions aren’t always reliable, AI voice regen leaves so much to be desired (the amount of credits I have wasted on this alone), it will randomly reset and go super slow, and when recording into it I have to say a prayer every time that nothing goes sideways as I record. Again if it was smoother I’d give it 5 stars just bc the functions offered can’t be found elsewhere, but I find myself frustrated pretty much every time I edit video.

they have the worst cancellantion experience ever, it's done in every single way to get you confused so you don't cancel. what a shady practice says a lot about the company

its a great concept and recommended by the course im taking. However, its buggy - I Feels a bit like a beta program - not a solid, pro platform like the audio programs im used to using.

I used to love descript. it gave me the ability to create videos with the look that I wanted. Then, they shifted to a nickle-and-dime tokenization approach about a year ago that stripped away individual control and empowered AI to make the changes for you. This will be ideal in about 10 years when AI is reliable. in the meantime, i feel like i am funding descript's AI R&D. I used to be able to do things on descript in a few clicks that i now need to rely on AI for. it's not that i want to use the descript AI, the software forces you into it. can someone please tell the descript braintrust that they were the up and coming talent that was headed for the hall of fame but then got sidetracked in a way that jeopardizes the company ever reaching its potential. there is still time to turn the ship around before it goes over the falls. to avoid disaster, descript should offer two paths: AI and DIY. charge more for DIY. just don't make me use that mediocre, error prone AI that is called underlord.

I spent multiple consecutive days trying to produce a single usable video using Descript's platform and its AI assistant, Underlord. Underlord repeatedly gave contradictory guidance — every fix it suggested created new problems. I even hired a professional AI consultant to spend a full day working alongside me on this, and even she couldn't get a usable result out of the platform.
On top of that, AI credits were deducted for Avatar generations that never completed.
To their credit, support initially acknowledged the issues — they refunded $400 and offered an additional $545.48. I accepted that offer in writing. The $400 came through, but the additional $545.48 they themselves offered has never been paid, and follow-up emails have gone unanswered.
If you're considering Descript for AI video/avatar features, go in with your eyes open. The product can fail in ways that cost you real money and time, and getting them to follow through on their own commitments afterward is another fight entirely.

I found this service to be both disappointing and excessively expensive. A month's worth of credits can be consumed by creating a single two-minute video, which feels unreasonable given the cost.

What makes the experience even more frustrating is that the video generation process can get close to completion before prompting users to purchase additional credits. This creates a poor user experience and gives the impression that the pricing model is designed to encourage additional spending rather than provide clear upfront costs

The website is only really useful if you want an AI to do the most basic editing tasks imaginable. Anything that is too complicated or too long won't work and uses a lot of your credits. But if this isn't a problem for you, please switch the button to a monthly billing plan instead of an annual one. The button to switch it over is very small and I accidentally spent 192 euro's. Overall, your better of using CapCut and it will probably be faster than using this.

Descript is a great tool for editing audio and video easily using text based editing.

JUST TOO SLOW.. very usefull, it is just extremely slow. you lost more time than using a proper design program

I've used Descript in the past while at an agency, worked fine for the use case at hand back then. Now though, to be able to try the product properly (podcast post-production use case) I had to pay for a subscription, because the trial didn't have the right limits.

Then the whole composition/track/section whatever setup worked horribly, couldn't get it to make sense and properly give me two tracks with different content for each and swapping out MP4 audio for .WAV file was super buggy. I'm on the latest version of Arc, and I also tried the desktop app. I'm on an i9 / 32gb ram laptop; hardware was not the issue.

Couldn't get a refund because they have a 48h refund policy; both AI and human support stuck to this, sure it's the rule but also I haven't used any of the credits/hours/ etc that the subscription I paid for contains.

Zero value received. Many software companies, seeing they've been unable to provide any value to a user, just give a refund; especially in this case when it was to try it out and I didn't use up any of the limits.

This used to be amazing.

Underlord did what it said on the tin, and it was an UNDERlord that was there to help. Now they've baked in AI which clearly isn't up to the job, and it's become everything they initially set out not to be: an OVERlord that just interprets things, but then makes a total mess of it all, so you manually end up unpicking it all.

This is a prime example of how AI becomes the enshittification of a what used to be a good product.

Descript would be a great program IF it worked reliably and did what it's supposed to do. It does not.

It is very buggy, has frequent glitches, and often exhibits unexpected, and unwanted, behavior. I have used it for a year to edit multiple projects and I would estimate that editing has taken me about 10 times longer than it would have, or should have, had it been a reliable and consistent product.

The company seems to be using paying customers as beta testers. That is not cool.

In fairness, I must add that considering they have to provide support for a buggy product, the support team generally does a very good job.

I was excited to use AI for support in editing, though I am experienced in iMovie, CapCut and Final Cut Pro. Pricing is total bait and switch. They say you can sign up for $16 a month, but only if you pay for a year at once. So the cheapest plan is $25 a month - HOWEVER - that includes only 400 "AI credits". Underlord, the AI agent that helps edit videos used all 400 of those credits in less than 15 minutes, meaning that even though I paid $25 as a flat fee for the month, if I wanted to continue using the product, I'd have to fork out more money for additional AI credits, and if I could use 400 credits in 15 minutes, this is not sustainable.

Underlord messed up BOTH audio and video and undoing its work piece by piece is extremely time consuming. So it's a pricey product that does not work.

I also find it extremely hard to sync audio + video because the preview screen is very small and difficult to enlarge. Underlord can not sync manually - it can't listen and match up and it can't view the audio files to try to sync up visually.

I'm not experience with AI, but I had a good experience making a video for work. HOWEVER (AND I MEAN A HUGE HOWEVER) THEY MAKE THE CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION PROCESS EXTREMELY CONVOLUTED AND COMPLICATED. I WASN'T ABLE TO CANCEL MY PLAN UNTIL I PAID FOR THE NEXT MONTH AFTER MY CARD LAPSED. THIS IS NOT HOW SERVICES WORK NOWADAYS.
