Trouble free phone experience over a number of years. I'm attracted by the GiffGaff foray into full-fibre broadband but can find out precious little about it online. Hence 4 stars not 5

I switched to giffgaff

I switched to giffgaff, my number stopped being able to receive certain calls, and all SMS. This cost me a job as I couldn't be contacted, it looked very unprofessional. I thought it could be an iPhone problem so spent hours on the phone to Apple, who let me know if was a network provider issue. Giffgaff customer service is virtually non existent, and they didn't even acknowledge the issue, let alone try to resolve it. I would avoid giffgaff.

Generally speaking the service is good…

Generally speaking the service is good BUT no-one has got to grip with the very poor reception we receive.
We have difficulty making and receiving calls and even have calls drop out mid conversation.
We have even upgraded our phones without success.

Gigg gaff lack of customer service is…

Gigg gaff lack of customer service is very poor. Ive been going round in circles unable to give them phone details, but had phone no. Unused contract wishing to cancel but nigh impossible. Cant get a new password without logging in! Ridiculous process. They apparently cancel contract if not used for six months, which is not true. Still taking my monthly payment and not used at all!

I’ve used giffgaff for years

I’ve used giffgaff for years. The reason? Brand loyalty. I’m a sucker. I have experienced so many issues with this provider over the years, from reliably-unreliable cellular coverage, to blackouts, and even the common pitfall of spending £15 in 10 minutes by falling for their unclear roaming terms. The thing is, there’s consistently better-ranked budget providers out there like Lebara Mobile. Heck, even the reviews for alternative providers get praise for customer service. Giffgaff doesn’t have customer service like that. It’s automated. Vastly and largely automated. They sustain their status as a budget competitor by essentially automating as much as possible and putting that towards marketing. Look, we’ve all stayed in a poor relationship at some point because it feels familiar and comfortable. But if you’re reading this, then maybe it’s time to change. Change for you. Change for the network service you deserve. Change for the better. Goodbye giffgaff.

Multiple hour long ordeal just to activate a new SIM

Had a terrible time today activating a new Giffgaff SIM for my dad - put it in, got a text message saying welcome, clicked it, it asked me to sign in. I tried to sign in with what I thought was the right password - sure, I might have got it wrong - then tried the Reset Password link. The reset password link does not work at all. Doesn't matter if you use the username, email, phone number - it does nothing. Tried it multiple times, checked spam folder, it never sends anything.
After trying it a few times I get the message "account is disabled, contact an agent, etc".
Contacting an agent consists of filling in an enormous form. It wants your IMEI, the 13 digit "serial number" written in tiny letters on the SIM, last 4 digits of debit card, size of your last bill, the works. I had an easier time applying for a passport.
I get an email after filling all that in. From a person who was quite polite, to be fair, but they asked for all the same information again. What's the point of the form?
After a couple of back and forth emails it still wasn't resolved. I was at this on and off for two hours. Eventually I ran out of time.
So - if you plan on ordering a SIM from Giffgaff you need to factor in a potential multi-hour long setup process akin to beginning a whole new false identity to flee the country.
I'd just get another SIM from someone else but I already paid £15 for that one so - that's the second lesson - do not pay upfront for the airtime on Giffgaff in case they just block your account!
Shame as I've used them for years personally and once set up, they've been fine. Always used to recommend them to people but not after this experience.
Sort this problem out and the service is fine.

I have been with Giffgaff for about two…

I have been with Giffgaff for about two years I can honestly say I have never had a problem, every month I get a message telling what date they will take payment it is well in advance, any problems are sorted quickly. They are really good it's the best move I've made, swap over you won't regret it.

I purchased a £10 pay-as-you-go SIM…

I purchased a £10 pay-as-you-go SIM card from Lidl. When I tried to activate it, I repeatedly received an error message saying that it could not be activated and directing me to the help page.

Unfortunately, the help page and online assistant kept sending me around in circles without resolving the issue. It also took a long time to find a telephone number, and when I eventually did, the estimated waiting time was 20 minutes.

After wasting more than two hours trying to complete what should have been a simple activation, I eventually gave up and threw the SIM card away.

In conclusion, I lost £10 and wasted over two hours because of an unnecessarily difficult and frustrating activation process.

If I could give this provider ZERO…

If I could give this provider ZERO stars I would!! Over the last 18 months the service has gotten worse. They obviously have problems with their association with 02 and coverage. Coverage continues to drop out at busy times. When kids come home from school in the afternoon and when everyone wakes up first thing in the morning and then at random times during the day when their masts can't keep up with demand. I've sent around 20+ complaints through their web based system and continue to receive generic AI generated responses but nothing changes. In fact it's getting worse. So far today I wasted about 2+ hours of productive time with data coverage drop outs. The same yesterday and the day before. Of course if you don't pay their bill at the end of the month you automatically get cut off but when the same happens to you and their coverage drops out - my only recourse is here. The affected area is the GL7 area of Gloucestershire.

GET A GRIP GIFFGAFF - that's going to be your new ad slogan moving forward,

Pathetic Signal

I moved from EE to giffgaff to try to actually get a reliable service at my home. We are close to a major town but to date none of the mobile providers have been any good.
I reported my poor service to giffgaff but have not had any response.
I am now using wifi calling from home.
I am now moving to talk mobile.
Let's see if they are any good.
