Abstract

 本発明は、単層構成で多色表示を可能とした新規な電気化学的な表示素子を提供する。この表示素子は、対向電極間に、下記一般式(A)で表される化合物と、酸化還元電位が+0.4V乃至+1.0V(SCE電極基準)の範囲にある電気化学的に活性な化合物と、金属塩化合物とを含有し、かつ金属イオンを含む化合物のモル濃度を[Metal](モル/kg)、ハロゲンイオンまたはハロゲン分子のハロゲン原子の総モル濃度を[x](モル/kg)としたときに、0≦[x]/[Metal]≦0.1という条件を満たす電解質を有しており、かつ該対向電極の駆動操作により、黒表示、白表示、黒以外の着色表示の3色以上の多色表示を行うことを特徴とする。
