Abstract

This invention provides a novel electrochemical display element which has a single-layer structure and can realize multi-color display. The electrochemical display element is characterized in that an electrolyte comprising a compound represented by general formula (A), an electrochemically active compound having an oxidation-reduction potential in the range of +0.4 V to +1.0 V (SCE electrode reference), and a metal salt compound and satisfying a requirement of 0 ≤ [x]/[Metal] ≤ 0.1, wherein [Metal] represents the molar concentration of a metal ion-containing compound, mole/kg; and [x] represents the total molar concentration of a halogen atom in a halogen ion or a halogen molecule, mole/kg, is contained between opposed electrodes, and multi-color display of three or more colors of black display, white display, and color display other than black is carried out by drive operation of the opposed electrodes.
