Abstract
A mixed web is prepared from a wet heat bondable fiber and a highly water absorbent fiber used in a ratio (mass ratio) of wet heat bondable fiber/highly water absorbent fiber of 20/80 to 80/20. The mixed web while being carried in a specified direction is subjected to heat treatment by high-temperature steam. Thus, there is produced a nonwoven fabric wherein its constituent fibers are oriented and wherein the fiber bonding ratio in its cross section is approximately uniform along the thickness direction thereof and is in the range of 5 to 50%. The nonwoven fabric while in its dry state being low in density and light in weight, upon absorption of water exhibits a high water absorbency and has the property of while exhibiting a high swell in at least one direction, exhibiting no swell in at least one direction.
