Definitions
- This invention concerns closure arrangements, and particularly but not exclusively closure arrangements for beverage cans or similar containers, and also containers including such arrangements.
- a very large number of ring pull beverage cans are produced in the world each year. Such cans can be left open for a significant time after opening before the contents are fully drunk. During this period it may be that something is added to the drink, i.e. the drink is spiked. Also, during this time ⁇ there is the possibility of foreign items entering the can including for instance insects. This can be particularly dangerous for example with insects such as wasps which sting, and which potentially could cause an anaphylactic shock which might prove fatal.
- a number of ring pull opening arrangements for beverage cans have been proposed to date. With some of these waste is produced in that the ring pulls are torn off the can during opening, and are then usually discarded.
- a closure arrangement including first and second parts which substantially overlie each other and are selectively movable relative to each other, the first part including an openable portion defined at least in part by a line of weakness therearound, a connection being provided between the openable part and the second part such that when the second part is moved relative to the first part the line of weakness is broken and the openable portion is moved relative to the remainder of the first part to provide an inlet.
- An opening may be provided in the second part which is alignable with the inlet.
- the second part may be configured such that the opening therein is automatically alignable with the inlet as the line of weakness around the openable portion is broken and the openable portion is moved relative to the remainder of the first part.
- the first and second parts may be rotatable relative to each other.
- the first and second parts may each have a generally coaxial circular configuration.
- the second part may be rotatably mounted on a circular peripheral lip of the first part.
- the arrangement may be configured such that the openable portion following opening locates between the remainder of the first part and the second part, substantially clear of the inlet.
- a space may be provided to receive the openable portion following opening, and the arrangement may be configured such that when the openable portion locates in said space, further relative movement between the first and second parts is substantially prevented.
- the space may be defined by a recess, or one or more projections which may be provided on an internal side of the second part.
- the arrangement may be configured such that the second part is provided on an external side of the first part.
- the openable portion may be made of a different material and/or may be thinner than the remainder of the first part.
- a filter may be provided locatable across the opening.
- the filter may be in the form of a filter member located on an internal side of the first part extending across the openable portion prior to opening.
- the filter member may be made of aluminium or a plastics material, and may be in the form of mesh. Alternatively the filter member may be made of a permeable material.
- connection may be in the form of a tab, web or formation extending between the second part and the openable portion.
- the invention also provides a container incorporating a closure arrangement according to any of the preceding ten paragraphs.
- the container may be a beverage can.

- Figs. 1 - 8 show a first closure arrangement 10 mounted on a beverage container in the form of an aluminium can 12 suitable for holding for instance a soft drink.
- the arrangement 10 includes a first part 14 mounted across the top of the can 12.
- a second part 16 is provided which is rotatably mounted on top of the first part 14 by an overlapping flange 18 engaging around and on the underside of a peripheral rim 20 on the first part 14.
- the first part 14 includes an openable portion 22 with a generally trunkaced teardrop shape defined by a line of weakness 24.
- a filter member 26 is mounted beneath the openable portion 22 by rivets 28 or other formations.
- a relatively small recess 30 is provided in the top of the first part 14 spaced from the openable portion 22.
- the second part 16 includes an opening 32 of a generally similar shape and size as the openable portion 22.
- the second part 16 is connected adjacent the opening 32 to the openable portion 22 by a projection 34 in the second part 16.
- the can 12 is filled in a conventional manner and the closure arrangement 10 is fitted thereon.
- the openable portion 22 remains as part of the first part 14.
- the second part 16 is rotated in a clockwise direction relative to the first part 14. This causes by virtue of the projection 34 the openable portion 22 to be torn open providing an inlet 36 in the first part 14.
- the opening 32 is rotated so as to become aligned with the inlet 36.
- the torn off openable portion 22 rotates between the remainder of the first part 14 and the second part 16, and the end thereof will locate in the recess 30 when fully open. This location substantially prevents further rotation in either direction of the second part 16 relative to the first part 14.
- the filter member 26 is located on the underside of the inlet 36 preventing material being pushed into the can 12, or foreign items such as, for example, insects, entering the can 12.
- Figs. 9 to 12 show a similar arrangement 40, and corresponding reference numerals are used. However, in this arrangement 40 the second part 16 is connected to the openable part 22 by a tab 38.
- the arrangement
- Figs. 13 - 15 show a third arrangement 44. This. is similar to the arrangement 10 except that in this instance the openable portion 22 is provided in the upper second part 16 and the opening 32 is provided in the lower first part 14. The openable portion 22 is connected to the first part 14 adjacent the opening 32 by a tab 46.
- the tab 46 rips open the openable portion 22 to provide an inlet 36 aligned in a fully opened position with the opening 32.
- a filter member 26 is provided on the inner side of the opening 32.
- closure arrangements for beverage cans and the like which permit opening without the use of a ring pull and the difficulties this can provide. Furthermore, this arrangement does not produce any waste when opened which could form litter.
- the filter member prevents unauthorised or unrequired material, creatures or articles entering a container following opening.
- the respective one of the first or second part may be connected to the openable portion by other means.
- the openable portion could be formed of thinner material and/or could be formed of a different material to the remainder of the first part.
- the openable portion could, for example, be formed of a metal or .plastic foil, which when the arrangement 10 is closed will be supported by the respective part of the overlying second part and will thus be protected and supported.
- the recess for receiving the torn openable portion could be omitted, or provided by a different formation. It is to be realised that in some circumstances it would not be necessary to provide a filter member.
- the filter member is made of an aluminium mesh, .but this could be formed of for instance, a plastics material mesh or a permeable material.
