I lldllll '1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARGARET A. TOMPKINS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
CURTAIN -DRAPING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARGARET A. ToMr- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of J elferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Draping Apparatus; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to curtain draping apparatus and has for its object to provide certain new and useful improvements over United States patent granted to me on J nne 22, 1909, No. 925,853.
In the present invention I provide a small wire rod to be used in connection with the pole of the curtain draping apparatus for the purpose of readily securing the length of the curtain to be draped from the top of the window to the floor so that after the curtain has been draped on the pole and the same is of exactly the right length it does not thereafter have to be altered or changed.
My invention therefore consists in the novel arrangement of the wire rod in connection with the pole in a curtain draping apparatus; and my invention also consists in certain combinations of parts all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is an elevation of a curtain draping apparatus illustrating my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the pole of the curtain draping apparatus removed from the tripod and showing the measuring attachment thereon. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view through the pole of the curtain draping apparatus and wire rod, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view in elevation illustrating the construction I employ for holding the wire rod in position on the pole of the curtain draping apparatus.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which;
1 indicates a curtain draping apparatus comprising the pole 2, tripod 3 and cross arm 4, said cross arm 4 being provlded cen- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1910.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911. Serial No. 549,545.
7 indicates the wire rod which as shown has its lower end coiled around the pole 2 and its upper end passed through two eyes 8, the extreme upper end of the rod 7 being flattened at 9 to prevent the passage of the end of the rod through the eyes 8. Secured to the coil 10 at the lower end of the rod 7 is a spring 11, said spring having its upper and lower ends 12 and 13 bent around the pole 2 embracing the same so as to prevent the rod 7 from freely sliding on the pole 2, this construction, however, providing for the sliding of the rod 7 on the pole 2 manually.
Having thus described the several parts of this invention its operation is as follows:
\Vhen it is desired to drape a curtain the pole 2 is removed from the tripod 3 and placed alongside of the window or opening about which a curtain or portiere is to be draped. The rod 7 is then slid along the pole until the top 9 of the rod is the same distance from the floor as the top of the window. This distance is then measured on the curtain and the curtain pole is then placed in the cross arm 4 and the draping of the curtain is effected, the length of the curtain being of course indicated by the slidable rod 7.
It is clearly evident from the foregoing description that a curtain can be quickly and artistically draped and applied to the curtain brackets of a window without having access to a step ladder or the like, for the reason that as soon as the length of the curtain has been determined and the curtain has been draped the pole 2 is raised out of the tripod, and the curtain pole carried on the cross arm 4 is placed in position on the usual curtain pole brackets at the top of the window or other opening.
Having thus-fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States; is
1. A curtain-draping device comprising a cross-arm at the top of the pole for carrym a portiere or curtain, a slidable rod carrie upon said pole and having its lower end terminating in a coil receiving endwise said pole, and a resilient member centrally connected to the lower end coil of said rod, said resilient member having upper and lower end reversely curved portions forming loops laterally receiving said pole and exerting a clasping or gripping action thereon.
2. A curtain-draping device comprising a pole member, a cross-arm at the top of the pole for carrying a portiere or curtain, said pole being provided near its upper end with eyes, aslidable rod received by said eyes and itself terminating at its lower end in a coil receiving sald pole, and a resilient member l l l l centrally bowed and connected to the lower end coil of said rod, said resilient member having upper and lower end reversely curved portions forming loops laterally receiving said pole and exerting a clasping or gripping action thereon.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
