UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
OTTO E. lVAGENER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND ME SNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO ELLA E. BOLAND AND CHARLES H. LLOYD, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE CURTAlN-POLE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,036, dated J anuary 25, 1898. Application filed August 21, 1896. $61lalN0- GOSASB. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO EWVAGENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, haveinventecl certain newand useful Improvements in Adjustable Curtain- Pole Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin IO the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in an adjustable curtain-pole support.
The invention has for its object the construction of a bracket and hanger for curtainzo poles which may be adjusted to any desired height.
Another object of my invention is the construction of a bracket and hanger of the abovedescribed class in which the curtainpole may be easily lowered to the floor or within reach of the operator, so that the said pole and curtain may be easily removed or replaced.
Another object of my invention is the con 0 struction of a bracket and hanger for the above-described purpose and which may be adjusted toward or from the window-frame.
XVith the above objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, com- 3 5 bination, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and where in like figures of reference indicate similar parts in the several views shown, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved adjustable curtain-pole support as it appears when complete, the curtain-pole being shown in section. Fig. 2 is afront View of the same with the curtain-pole removed. Fig. 3 is a side view of the extension portion removed from the bracket with the lid or cover of the casing removed to show the working parts, a portion of which is shown in section. Fig. i
is a front view of the same, partly shown in section, with the supporting cord orchain removed. Fig. 5 is a view of the opposite side of the reel or drum removed from the case.
Tolput my invention into practice,I provide the bracket 1, which is provided with an opening into which is loosely fitted the extensionpieoe 2. A hole 3 is formed within the said extension-piece for the reception of the screw 4, which extends up through the slot 5 of the bracket and serves to securely hold the two parts together. Secured or formed upon the free end of the said extension-piece is the hollow case or box 6, having the lid 7, which is provided with a small hole in its center to fit over the split pin 8, which is secured fast to the opposite side of the case or box. A thread is formed upon the end of the split pin for the reception of the nut 9, which when tightened up secures the cover in place. Loosely mounted upon the said pin and within the casing is the reel or drum 10. A flat spiral spring 11 is secured within and to the said reel or drum at one end by the pin 12 and at its'opposite end is secured within the split of the pin 8. Upon the outer side of the reel is formed the flange 13, which is provided with the nick or stop 14 and is adapted to engage with the free end of the pawl 15, which is loosely pivoted within and to the side of the case, as shown. The supporting tape or cord 16, having the ring 17 upon its lower end, is passed up through the opening 18 and securely attached to the said reel or drum. The semicircular piece 19 is secured or formed upon the lower portion of the case or box and is adapted to form a guide for the ring and ourtain-pole 20.
Before applying the supporting devices in place the springs are wound up so as to put the same in tension and also wind the supporting-cords upon the reel, as shown at Fig. 1. Two of the devices are then attached to the window-frame in the usual manner. The
as shown at Fig. 1, where the pole is desig- 10c nated as 20. After the curtain and pole are arranged in a satisfactory manner a slight pull is all that is necessary to disengage the pawls from the drums 0r reels, and the springs being in tension the supporting cords are drawn up and rewound upon the reels lifting the pole and curtain to the desired height. They may be stopped at various heights by allowing the pawls to engage with the reels as before.
Slight changes may be made in the construction of the device without departing from the general spirit of my invention, such as using a chain instead of a cord, as well as other minor details.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire, to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y 1. A bracket for curtain-poles, consisting of an arm adapted to be secured at one end to the window-frame, its opposite end carryin g a spring-drum, and a tape orcord attached to said drum, and having at its outer end a pole-socket at a point below said spring-drum, whereby it is adapted to operate as described.
2. In a curtain-pole support, the combination of the bracket, the adjustable extensionpiece therefor having a case or boxat one end containing a spring-actuated reel or drum and having a semicircular guide upon its lower side, around an'opening therein, the curtain-pole adapted to fit said guide, the ring fitted upon said curtain-pole, and the cord or chain connected to said ring and passing through said opening and connected to said reel or drum, substantially as set forth.
3. A curtain-pole fixture comprising an arm having its inner end adapted to be secured to a window-frame, an open pole'socket at its outer end, a spring-drum carried by said arm, and a tape attached at one end to said drum, its opposite end adapted to be attached to a curtain-pole, the tape passing and drawing in a direction against the inner wall of the socket, whereby the pole is held therein by the tension of the spring-drum, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO E. WAG'ENER.
