CURTAIN-POLE-REMOVING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALroN W. BEGLINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grafton, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Pole-Removing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a curtain pole removing device, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable device that obviates the necessity of using a stepladder or chair for removing a pole or rod from brackets at the upper end of a window frame, thereby preventing persons and property from being injured by the sudden collapse of a stepladder or by a person falling from the same.

A further object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive device that can be easily manipulated for gripping a pole or rod, either for removing the pole or rod from brackets or for placing the pole or rod in position.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing; wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, illustrating by dotted lines the device gripping a pole or rod.

A curtain pole removing device in accordance with this invention comprises a pole 1 that can be of any desired length. Mounted in the upper end of the pole are the ends 2 of a piece of wire that is bent to form an oblong support 3 having looped or U-shaped ends 4 adapted to support a pole or rod 5. Secured upon the upper end of the pole 1 by screws 6 or other fastening means are the lateral flanges 7 of apertured ears 8, said ears having offset portions 9 clamping the ends of the support 3 together. Pivotally mounted between the apertured ears 8 by a pin 10 is the flat portion 11 of a lever, said lever having the long arm 12 thereof provided with a hook 13 and the short arm 14 slightly curved, said short arm being of a length as to ride in close proximity to the outer sides of the Specification of Letters Patent.

support 3. Attached to the hook 13 of the long arm 12 is a cord 15 and attached to the flattened portion 11 of the short arm 14 is a coiled retractile spring 16 having the lower end thereof secured by a tack 17 or other fastening means to the pole 1.

When it is desired to remove the pole 5 from brackets, the cord 15 is pulled upon to swing the short arm 14 to an open position. The support 3 is then placed under the pole 5 and the cord 15 released, whereby the spring 16 will close the short arm 14 upon the pole 5, thereby preventing the pole 5 from becoming accidentally displaced relatively to the support 3, while the pole 5 is being lowered.

It is apparent from the foregoing that curtains or draperies can be placed upon the pole 5, the device attached to the pole and the pole raised and placed in position upon brackets or other supports.

The pole 1 can be made of wood and the remainder of the device of light and durable metal.

What I claim is 1. A curtain pole removing device comprising the combination with a vertically disposed handle, of an oblong member formed from a single length of round stock, said member having each end thereof bent downwardly to provide a U-shaped support, said support having each of its ends bent at right angles with respect to said member and rearwardly therefrom, said ends of said stock further bent downwardly and engaging into the top of the handle, a pair of vertically disposed apertured ears arranged at the top of said handle and each provided with a laterally extending flange fixed to the handle, each of said ears furthermore provided with a clamping portion, said clamping portions engaging the right angular bends of said stock for supporting the same, a lever pivotally mounted between said ears and having one arm projecting over said member for maintaining the curtain pole therein, and means for maintaining said lever in closed position.

A curtain pole removing device comprising the combination with a vertically disposed handle, of an oblong member formed from a single length of round stock, said member having each end thereof bent downwardly to provide a U-shaped support, said support having each of its ends bent at right angles with respect to said member and rearwardly therefrom, said ends of said stock further bent downwardly and engaging into the top of the handle, a pair of vertically disposed apertured ears arranged at the top of said handle and each provided with a laterally extending flange fixed to the handle, each 01": said ears furthermore provided with a clamping portion, said clalnping portions engaging the right angular bends of said stock for supporting the same a lever pivotally mounted between said ears and having one arm projecting over said member for maintaining the curtain pole therein, a spring attached to said arm and to said handle for maintaining the arm in 15 closed position, and a cable attached to the other arm of said lever and constituting means for shifting the first mentioned arm to open position.
