IEMPROVEMENT IN TOPS I OR SIRUP-PIICHERS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same.

To all persons to whom these presents shall come Be it known that I, Tnonms SMITH, J r., of Boston, county of Suli'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops of Sirnp-Pitchers, 8m; and t-hat the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accon'ipanying plate of drawings.

The present invention relates to sirnp-pitchers more particularly, although the improvements embraced by it may be adapted to other pitchers, 850.; and

.The invention consists in moulding or otherwise forming, in one and the same piece of metal or-other suitable material, the top or encircling rim to thebody ofa pitcher, 8m, and the pivot or spindle on which the cover or lid thereto is t-o-be hung and to turn.

In the accompanying plate of drawings, my improvements in pitcher-tops, 820., are illustrated.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the top and encircling rim to a pitcher, moulded or formed according to the present invention.

A, in the drawings, represents a top or rim, suitable, in the present instance, for sirup-pitchers, whereon, by its end B, it is to be placed, and secured in any proper manner.

G, the spout or nozzle to top A.

Along tbeside D of the top A, diametrically opposite to its spout C, is a pivot or spindle, a, moulded or otherwise formed in the recess 1) of the top, in one and the samepiece of metal or other suitable mateiial, of which the top proper is itself made or formed.

This pivot uterminates, at each end of the recess b, with a space, 0, around it, 0uthe lower side, from end I to end.

This cover orlid E, at one and the proper end, has

moulded or otherwise formed with it, and in one and the same piece of metal or other suitable material, a tail-piece, F, of proper form and size, to be bent or formed into a but about the pivot a of the top A, as.

shown in fig. 5, when the lid is to be attached thereto, said tail-piece, whenthus bent, being secured, by solderin g or otherwise, firmly to the under side of the lid.

'By my invention, it is obvious that the top to a pitcher, &c., the lid, and the hinge or joint of the two, are produced by the useof only two separate and distinct pieces or parts, viz, the one the top, and the other the lid, owing to their separate formation .or manufacture, the advantages of which are many, among which. may be enumerated, as the more important, that the .labor of manufacture is much reduced, and consequently the expense, and that a much better and more reliable and compact joint or hinge is obtained, than by the old method of nmnui'acture, wherein a separate pin or pivot was driven and secured in the top, to produce the iutle or axis of the hinge.

It will be here remarked, that in lieu of moulding the pin within a recess of the top, bringing it below the upper edge thereof, as shown, itmay be located above the same, (see Figure 6. of the drawings,) reducing the size of the lid, as is manit' spection of said figure.

Having. thus described my invention,

1 will state my claims, as follows:

1. The construction of the encn'cling ring B for the body of the pitcher,'with the spindle or-pivot a, from.

one piece of metal, as shown and described.

2. In combination with the encircling ring B, as constructed, the top A, as shown and described.
