Letters Patent No. v91,669, dated .Tune 22, 1869.4
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTING JUG-TOPVIS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent making part of the sama.
To all to whom these presents shall come:
--Be it known that I, FRANCIS B. RICHARDSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and Gommonwealth of Massachusetts, have made an-invention of certain new and useful Improvements in Jug-Tops; and do hereby declare the following to be -a full, clear,`and exact description thereof, Adue reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speci fication, and in which- Y Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2, a vertical and central section of a jug-top, in the'constrnction of which is ,embraced my invention.
This inventionrelates to improvements in the manuf facture of the metallic tops of jugs, as they are called, for the reception of sirup,A milk, Sto., whereby to greatly reduce the amount of labor requisite .for their production, the result being a corresponding reduction in the costv of such production.
These tops are composed, asit is well known, of a tubular neck, or ring, formed with -an elongated, tapering nose, for guiding the iiow of liquid from the jug, and ,provided with a cover, hinged to the rear part of the upper lsurfac'eof the tubularneck, for protecting the'contents of the jug from insects or any foreign matter. v
Heretofore, in most cases, one portion of this hinge, or that independent of the cover, has been cast in a separate piece, and soldered ,to the ring, or mouthpiece before mentioned. Y
My present invention or improvement consists in casting this last-mentioned portion of the hinge of a jug-top in one and the same piece or mass with the tubular neck, or mouth' of such top.
In the drawings before alluded to as accompanying this specication, and which illustrate my invention,
' the jug-top is represented at A- as composed of a tubular neck, or ring b, provided with a discharging-nose, or trough, c, in the usual manner.
The cover of the jug-top is shown at d, and the male portion of itshinge at e, such portion of the hinge being provided with a knob, f, cast in one piece with it, and the whole soldered to the cover, the purpose of the knob being to facilitate the opening and closing of' the cover.
' The female portion of the 4hinge is shown at g, as4
cast in .one piece with-the tubular neck b, and composed of a narrow shelf, or lip, formed upon the upper part of such neck. Y
The advantages resulting from my improved construction of jug-top are, first, one casting (that is, of the independent hinge-part), is avoided; second, the soldering of one portion of the hinge to the mouthpiece is avoided; and third, the trimming and finishing ofthe edges of this soldered joint are avoided.
Owing -to the great number o f these articles cast in a large establishment, the saving 'ofA time, consequent upon the advantages before mentioned, renders my' invention of considerablel value.
Claim.
In jug-tops, in which one portion of the hinge which holds the cover is locatedupon a shelf, projecting from the rim of the tubular neck, and forming the prolongation of the hinged cover, I claim castingsaid shelf and hinge in one and the same piece with the tubular neck, substantially as and for the purposes herein shown and specified. p
FRANCIS B. RICHARDSON.
