THoMAs B. ATTEHBUEY, 0F PITTSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR To HIMSELF AND JAMESS. ATTERBURY.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGED TOPS FOR GLASSWARE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I94A95, dated August 21, 1877 application filed March 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, THOMAS B. ATTER- BURY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinged Tops for Glassware; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is'a vertical section of a molassespitcher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar section through the hinge, and Fig. 3 is a pcrspctive view of the hinge and under side of the cover. 7
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to hinge tops for molasses pitchers and similar articles of glassware; and consists in providing an article of the class specified with a vitreous dome or cup-shaped top secured by a metallic base-ring and an open knuckle or strap-hinge, whereby a neat, cheap, ornamental, and ett'ective hinge top is obtained.
I will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
A represents an article of glassware having a top, B, and hinge O. The top B, which is of suitable vitreous material pressed or molded into shape, is given, by preference, the form of a dome or inverted cup, provided with a slight base-flange, b, as shown. B is the hinge rim or ring, the top of which may be made of Britannia or other suitable metal or alloy, and is formed with a flange, b, for reception of the base of top B, and a second flange, 0, (indicated in dotted line, Fig. 1,) which is turned or. spun down to secure the rim and top'together.
Secured to or formed with the hinge-rim B is the knuckle portion of the hinge, which connects the top to article A. The knuckle is formed by the arms 0 with the pintle-pieces and end caps c and the strap or straps z, arranged somewhat cross-shaped, as shown, so as to obtain a slotted or open knuckle. p represents the pin-tle or pintles formed on or with the article A, either upon a lug, Z, or, if the article is provided with a handle, then upon the upper portion of said handle, if preferred.
,As in pressed glassware, the pintle will be formed near the division of the mold-sections, and a perfectly smooth pintle will be obtained.
In fitting together the article described, the base of top B is placed within the flanges of the hinge ring or rim B, and the flange c is turned or spun down over the edge I) to secure the two together. The open or slotted knuckle C is then slipped upon the pintle or pintles, so that the caps eand straps '11 embrace the same,
and the straps are then bent together or closed around the pintles by means of curved pliersor other suitable tool.
The advantages derived from my invention are that a simple, efiective, and easily-applied hinge-connection is provided. Furthermore, a top of the class described does not tarnish like metal tops, and is much more desirable in an article of table-ware.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-- In a molasses-pitcher or similar article of glass table-ware, the cover provided with the slotted knuckle or open strap-hinge c '11 i, and connected to the glass article by vitreous pintles formed thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said THOMAS B. ATTERBURY, have hereunto set my hand.
THOS. B. ATTERBURY.
