Y IMPROVED MACHINE FOR SHEARING' ANGLEIRON.`
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of they same.
To Il whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS REANEY, of Chester, Delaware county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Machine for Shearing Angle-Iron; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,and exact description ofthe same.
My invention consists of certain mechanism, fully described hereafter, whereby. the angle-iron ribs of vessels can be sheared without that tedious adjustment and manipulation which was demanded in shearing the said ribs by the. ordinary machinery heretofore used.
In order to enable others, familiar with machinery of this class, to malte aml use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specitication, and in whichl l Figure l is an exterior view .of my improved machinefor shearing angle-iron;

On any suitable frame, A, or forming a part of the same, are guides, a, for a raui, B, to which a reciprocating motion is imparted, in the present instance, by an eccentric, b, on a shaft, D, thevsaid eccentric. being adapted to an oblong opening in the ram, so as to operate on the latter in a manner which will betreadily understood without description.
',llie shaft D has its bearings in the frame of the machine, and may be driven by a system of gearing similar to that employed in connection with punching and shcaring-machines.
At the lower end ot' the ram is a blade, d, having two shearing-edges, at right angles to each other; and to the, frame of the machine is secured a counterblade, E, having two shearing-edges, e i', also arranged at right angles to each other, the shearing-edges of the blade and counter-blade coinciding with each other during the movements of the ram.
ln shearing on the ends ot' bent angle-iron bars, such as are used for the ribs of iron vessels, much diliculty has heretoibre been experienceih owing to the ram carrying the.npper shearing-blade having eithera vertical or' horizontal movement, which rendered it necessary, in adjusting the bent ribs to the shears, in some cases to up-end,and in other cases to lower the said ribs, so that they might be in a proper position to be acted on by the blades, and this necessary adjnstn'ient demanded much exertion and tedious manipulation. as well asready judgment, from the attendants.
The obiect of my invention has been to overcome these ditiiculties, and the object has been attained, in the manner which Inwill now proceed to describe.
The ram B, instead of having a vertical or horizontal movement, is arranged to reciprocate, in a plane ot forty-five degrees, or thereabout, to a horizontal plane, and the shearing-edge c of the blade E, and correspoiuling edge ot' the upper blade d, are horizontal, or nearly so. The other edges ofthe same blades are vertical, or nearly so.
In consequence ot' this arrangement, the angle-iron H, shown by red lines in 1in. 1, having been so applied to the machine thatone flange shall bear upon the shearing-edge cof the blade E, while the other bears against -the edge c ofthe saine blade, can be adjusted to any point, where the shears have to take effect, without the necessity of' tip-ending or lowering the cumbrous rib, which has to be simply supported in a horizontal position by one or 'more attendants, while another etiects the desired adjustment.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An angle-iron shea-riiig-machine, having a two-edged shearilig-blade, arranged to reciprocate in acourse.at an angle of forty-live degrees, orthereabout, to ahorizontal plane, in combination with a two-edged stationary blade, when Vthe edges of the said blades are arranged substzmtially as herein described.
