HAT-FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNIE STRAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat fasteners, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, practical and reliable device for ladies, so invsecuring hats upon the head, the fastening means may be connected with and carried by the hat thus avoiding the necessity of puncturing the crown of the hat with numerous holes.

A further object of the invention is to so connect the fastening device with the hat as to provide elasticity whichl will form a. yielding connection between the fastening device and the hat to more effectively prevent the hat from becoming' detached from the hair.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con struction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, l designates a hat of any suitable description to which t-he fastening device is permanently connected. rIhe fastening device comprises a pair of similar hat pin members each of which is formed as shown in Fig. 3 of a continuous piece of wire bent to comprise substantially parallel portions S which are connected together at one end as shown at 4by a rounded portion forming the rounded extremity of the member, while at the opposite end the member is provided with an enlarged eye 5 adapting the same to be loosely attached to an elastic connector 6. In other words the pin consists of a loop-shaped shank and an eye-shaped head, the opening of which communicates with the opening of the shank.

The connector 6 consists of a suitable length of elastic webbing which is folded upon itself to form a loop as shown in Fig. 2 the loop passing through the enlarged eye 5 of the hat pin member while the extre1ni- Speccation of Letters Patent.

ties of the connector are stitched or otherwisefastened together and also secured to the inner side of the crown of the hat in the manner indicated in Fig. l.

It will be understood by reference to Fig.

l that'two of such hat pin members are em- 4 veniently gripped after the hat is placed on the head and thrust into the hair. In this longitudinal movement of the pin one of the side members 3 will slide freely in the attaching loop 6 and as the loop 6 is flexible the pin can be inserted through the hair transversely or toward the front or rear as will be found most desirable according to the manner in which the hair is dressed, and after the pin is fully inserted the loop 6 will extend transversely to the eye 5 and thus prevent the pin from accidentally working loose.` When the hat pin members are completely inserted as shown in Fig. l, the extremities of such members are embedded in the hair and obtain a sufliciently firm hold thereon to prevent the hat from being blown or otherwise accidentally moved from the head.

The fastening device as a whole is carried by the hat so as to be accessible at all times.

I claim The combination of a hat including a crown, with a hat fastener normally disposed in the crown, anda flexible attaching device consisting of a doubled elastic tape having its upper end fastened to the crown and its lower looped end free from the crown and terminating adjacent th-e bottom edge thereof, said pin consisting of a continuous piece in the form of a looped shank and an eye-shaped head which has its opening communicating with the opening of the shank to permit the pin to move longitudinally into and out of the crown by freely sliding through the attaching loop.
