To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARA ADAMs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvemerits in Barrettes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a fastener for veils and the like combined with a barrette, clasp or like article. Ordinarily to fasten the veil about the head, the loose ends of the same are either tied in a knot or pinned together.

It is one of the objects of the present in vention to arrange a simple and ineXpensive means on a barrette, clasp, comb or the like whereby each end of the veil may be releasably fastened independently of the other loose end so that either side and end may be loosened without interfering with the other side or end.

The above and other objects will be apparent from the following description accompanied by the drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a rear view of the device sh0wing the ends of the veil in position.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device through the openings shown in Fig. 1, showing parts in elevation.

Fig. 3 is a rear view of a modification.

Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the same.

As indicated in the drawing, the inven tion has been applied to an ordinary barrette of celluloid or other suitable material having the curved body portion A. Opposite the concave surface B of the body portion is arranged the usual means for adjusting or securing the barrette to the hair of the wearer and comprises the tongue D hinged on the lugs E, E, and cooperating with the tongue keeper F at the other end of the body A. Two projections or hooks G, G are struck up from the convex surface of the body portion A intermediate its ends and leave the openings H, H therebeneath. The shanks J of the hooks or projections G are at an angle or perpendicular to the convex surface C of the body A and the pointed tapering ends K, K thereof, bent at right angles to the shanks J, lie parallel to the body portion A, are directed toward each other, or in opposite directions and are disposed over the opening H in the body.

In the modification shown in Figs.3 and 4 the invention is shown as applied to an ornamental metal clasp or pin L. In this new the hooks are not integral with the body portion nor struck therefrom but are separately stamped or formed members M, M secured to the body by rivets N or otherwise. The shank portions 0, O of hooks M are perpendicular to the body A and the tapered ends P, P are parallel to the body and at right angles to the shank. Humps R, R are formed on the parallel part P, P of the hooks to augment the wedging action and also releasably lock the ends of the veil V in the hook.

In use the veil having been drawn over the face or front of the head, the loose ends of the same are slipped in beneath the hooks of the clasp and are wedged in and held there. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the portions of the veil beneath the hooks are forced into the openings and this affords an additional holding action. Of course, the end of the veil may be hooked onto the projections but as this may tear the fabric, the use of the device in the other manner is preferable. It will be evident that numerous modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and that the invention may be applied generally to articles similar to the barrette, such as clasps, pins, combs, etc., and it is accordingly not intended that the invention be limited to the exact details as shown and described except as required by the appended claim.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

A combined barrette and veil fastener comprising a curved body plate of celluloid or similar material, means extending lengthwise of the plate on the concave side thereof for securing the device to the hair of the wearer, and hooks extending toward each other and longitudinally of the convex side of the plate for engaging a veil to retain the same in position, said hooks being struck from the body of the plate within the marginal edges thereof leaving openings in said plate beneath the hooks, each of said hooks having a tapering portion permanently spaced from and disposed substantially parallel to the plane of the convex side of said plate, each tapering portion terminating in a point at its free end and bemg rigidly connected to said plate by an abruptly bent portion of the hook which s of less length than the part of the hook parallel to the convex side of the plate; the openings beneath the hooks being permanently unobstructed and adapted to receive therein portions of the veil engaged by the hooks above the openings whereby said portions are wedged in the openings.
