PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER C. SHELBY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.`
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 181,872, dated September 5, 1876; application filed July 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, CHRISTOPHER O. SHEL- BY, of vJersey'City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Pin-Comb Hat-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this speciiication.
This invention relates to fastenings for the hats of ladies and children; and consists of a pin made in any form suitable for the purpose, and attached to the top of a comb, or some equivalent therefor.
In the drawings I have represented, in Figure l', a fastener, consisting of long flexible prongs, adapted to pass through the hair and take iirm hold therein. To the top of this I attach a pin, a, which maybe in the form of an ordinary safety-piu. A simplez and convenient Way of attaching the pin is to make two pertorations through the head of the comb, and pass the wire through these holes, said wire being properly'bent and the pointed end turned around to engage with the loop. Fig. 2 shows the-pin .applied in the same Way to a com b.
Obviously it may be applied to combs of any material, as horn, rubber, bone, metal, &c., and to many of the ordinary forms.
, The pin is passed securely through some part ot' the hat or lining ot' -the hat, and then sprung into the loop, at'ter which the comb is thrust into the hair with the hat attached to it. This holds the hat tirmly upon the head, and saves greatannoyance to the wearer.
The fastener may be very cheaply made, a'nd by my method of attachment to the. comb may be applied cheaply, and the whole furnished at very smallcos I claim as my invention- 1. A hat-fastener, consisting ot' a pin adapted for connection with the hat, and attached toa comb, or an equivalent thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hat-fastener, consisting of the pin a, connected to the comb, when combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
