CHARLES C. PRATT, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRIMM INGS FOR WHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,171, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed October 2 2, 1 8 9 6.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLEs O. PRATT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heads and Caps for Whips, Fishpoles, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a head or cap for the butt-end of whips, fishpoles,&c. ,which caps or tips, while being comparatively inexpensive, will provide an elastic end and which elastic end will be permanently and securely anchored in position and which, While being less expensive than those heretofore made, will be more efficient, and all danger of the elastic piece being detached will be entirely avoided.
I accomplish the object of my invention by the construction herein set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side view in section, showing the metal portion of a shell and the elastic button or tip in section, while the anchoring-piece is shown in full lines, the metal and elastic portions of the device in this figure being shown detached. Fig. 2 a like view showing the elastic material in position with the anchoring-pins turned over to engage the metal and hold the two parts securely together, and Fig. 3 is a top view of the device.
a designates a metallic cap or thimble formed with a closed end or bottom I), having a central pin-hole c and adapted to fit on and over the butt-end of a whip-stock. This thimble (1 is formedwith an annular head or enlargement (1 about its outer end and with a Serial No. 609,655. (No model.)
circular raised rib or head a on the closed end 'or bottom, the circular space Within the circular rib c constituting a seat in which the elastic tip-piece f is lodged and kept from lateral displacement and firmly secured, by means of pins h h, in the elastic piece f and projected through the opening e and struck down firmly against the inner surface of the bottom I), as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In the construction of my device the yielding or elastic tip portion f is preferably formed of rubber, and while it is in plastic condition the anchoring device is placed therein and the rubber is subjected to a vulcanizing process, thus permanently fixing the anchoringpiece in the tip with the portion by which it is attached to the shell projecting therefrom. These pins or projecting parts are then inserted through the opening in the top portion of the metal shell and are turned over against the inner surface, as shown in Fig. 2, thus securely fastening the elastic piece to the metal piece.
Having therefore described my invention what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As an article of manufacture, a whip-cap adapted to be applied to the butt-end of a whip-stock and comprising the metallic thimble having a flat end provided with a raised head 0 and a perforation e, and the elastic tip having the head of the fastening-staple embedded therein and the prongs passed through the perforation in the head and clenched down on the under side thereof.
CHARLES C. PRATT.
