Be it known that I, MINNIE I-IUEMPFNR, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Marcial, in the county of Socorro and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hat fasteners; and it has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character which will be particularly designed for use upon ladies hats and which will consist of coacting elements receiving the pin and holding the same anchored within the hair and in such manner as to eliminate the necessity of having to extend the pin through the crown of the hat.

Another object of the invention is the provision of coacting retaining elements of the pin which will include laterally movable parts thatv depend from the bandeau of the hat and which are arranged relatively thereof, so as to permit them to accommodate themselves to the conditions of the hair at the sides of the head and prevent undue derangement of the hair incident to the use of the device.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, `as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings z-Figure 1 is an inverted perspective view of a hat, showing the application of the fastener thereto; Fig. 2 is a side view of the attaching member; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the pin.

With reference to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the fastener comprising identical plates 1, 1, secured in any suitable well known manner at 2 within the bandeau of the hat, as shown in Fig. 1 and arranged preferably at diametrically opposite points. As the plates 1, 1, are identical, it is believed that a description of one will suffice for both and briefly it is stated that each plate is constructed of flexible material which may be metal, celluloid, hard rubber, tortoise shell or the equivalent thereof and having such inherent qualities as will permit the plates to be rolled or flexed longitudinally, so that it will conform with the curvature of the bandeau. The flexing of the plates as described is also made in order that the mating portions of the pin receiving portion of the attaching means may be brought into operative alinement for the reception of the pin as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the direction of the front of the hat the plate is provided along its lower edge with lugs 3f, to which lugs l of a loop or yoke 5 are pivoted. Said loop or yoke is provided with vertical branches 6 and a connecting lower bar 7, the latter being of such proportion that will permit of the proper formation of an intervening space 8 between the branches 6. At the opposite end or in the direction of the rear of the hat, the plate is provided on its lower edge with similar lugs 9, which are pivotally connected with similar lugs 10 on a member 11. The member 11 is provided with a downwardly restricted portion 12, which is terminally formed into a hook 13.

In conjunction with the attaching means mentioned, I employ a hair engaging pin 14 having a shank 15 curved slightly in a longitudinal direction and provided at one end with an ornamental knob 16 and an eye 17. In the eye is connected one end of a chain or retaining device 18, the opposite end thereof having connection at 19 with the adjacent end of the plate. This arrangement is preferred in that the pin may be held against accidental derangement from the hat or from loss therefrom, as will be understood. The pin 141 is provided at a point adjacent to the head 16 with a hook having a lateral branch 20 and a longitudinally outwardly curved tongue 21. The opposite end of the pin is provided with a suitable point 22 which will serve to facilitate the operation of properly applying the pin into the hair of the user.

From the construction specified, it is apparent that when the hat is placed upon the head of the wearer the attaching devices will be disposed at the sides of the head. The

pins 14 may be drawn through the loops 5 of the devices until the forward branches 6 are engaged by the branches 20 of the hooks of the pin and the branches 6 securely confined in the spaces 23 between the tongues 22 and the adjacent portions of the Shanks of the pins. The pointed terminals 22 are then guided through or suitably connected in the hooks 13 of the members 12 at the opposite ends of the attaching devices. The pins 14 after being adjusted in this manner are pivotally engaged in the hair at the sides of the hat and the necessity of ex` tending the pins or other fasteners through the crown of the hat is entirely eliminated.

By providing plates 1 that may be flexed or have such inherent qualities that they may be bent to conform With the curvature of the bandeau of the hat it is obviously seen that the loop 5 and the member l1 of each plate are arranged in proper relative alinement for the reception of the pin.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation `of the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
