PAGE-MARKER AND MUSIC-LEAF TURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 10, 1910.
Application filed July 20, 1909. Serial No. 508,646.
T 0 all whom; "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUISE F. SUDDIOK, citizen of the United States, residing at De Soto, in the county of J eiferson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Page-Markers and Music-Leaf Turners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined leaf turner and marker and has for its object to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive device of this character capable of being readily attached to the leaf of a book or to a sheet of music and which serves dual purpose of a music leaf turner and a means for marking any page or pages of a book, magazine or other periodical for future reference.
The object of my invention as a leaf turner is to provide an easy and effective means of deftly turning the leaves of sheet music either by the performer or by an attendant; and as a page marker to provide a simple and inexpensive way of marking any certain page of any book, magazine or other periodical, or newspaper clipping, containing a subject or paragraph that the reader may at some future time wish to read or re-read, or study or preserve from destruction.
This device is intended to be made in different sizes, large or small, as convenience may suggest, to suit large or small books, or those having narrow or deep margins, or to suit the leaves of sheet music.
My invention consists in providing a leaf turner or marker including a body portion formed of a plurality of flat strips of paper or other material fastened together in such a manner as to produce spaced attaching lips at one end thereof for engagement with the marginal edge of a leaf, the other end of the body portion terminating in a finger-piece or tip.
It further consists in folding the strips of paper constituting the finger-piece or tip in opposite directions to a position at substantially right angles to the face of the body portion to facilitate grasping the finger-piece when turning the leaves.
Further advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a leaf turner and marker constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same applied to a sheet of music; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device detached, and before the finger-pieces or tips are folded; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View showing the lips engaging the marginal edge of a leaf and the finger-pieces folded in opposite directions; Fig. A: is a plan view of the device prior to bending or folding the finger pieces; Fig. 5 is a plan view illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved leaf turner and marker forming the subject matter of the present invention comprises a body portion, preferably formed in two flat strips of paper or other suitable material 5 and 6 having their opposite longitudinal edges cut away to produce an intermediate contracted neck 7 the strips of paper at the contracted portion or neck 7 being fastened together by glue or other adhesive material.
Disposed on one side of the contracted portion or neck 7 are spaced attaching lips 8 having their inner faces coated with a suitable adhesive material so as to permit the device to be attached to the marginal edge of a leaf, indicated at 9 in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The marginal edges of the strips 5 and 6 on the other side of the contracted portion 7 are curved or rounded to produce fingerpieces or tips 10, said finger-pieces or tips being folded laterally in opposite directions so as to assume a position at substantially right angles to the faces of the strips and thus facilitate grasping the finger-pieces when turning the music leaves.
By having the finger-pieces or tips 10 extended laterally in opposite directions the leaves of music may be readily turned from right to left and vice versa by merely grasping the finger-piece or tip with the fore finger and thumb of the hand, as will be readneck, the strips on the other side of the neck "i ily understood. being bent laterally in opposite directions Having thus described the invention what to form finger-pieces. is claimed as new is In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 5 A device of the class described including in presence of two witnesses.
