ROSS O. PIERCE, OF MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA.
BOOK-MARK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pgrtgntefl June 12, 1917,
Application filed February 21, 1917. Serial No. 150,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ross 0. PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Michigan City, in the county of Laporte and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Marks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book marks and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel book mark, which, when applied to the pages of a book will positively mark the same and also, will permit the book to be opened and the pages thereof to remain fiat, thus, eliminating accidental displacement of the mark and further, annoyance by the undue turning of the pages.
It is also an object of the invention to.
provide a book mark so constructed as to allow the same to be readily arranged between the pages of a book and one which will not harmfully affect the same when closed.
All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangements of parts of the preferred embodiments of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained, when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein said embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present improvements.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved book mark as applied to the pages of a book; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more specifically to the several figures of the said drawings, the improved book mark may be stated to inelude a tapered body portion 1, the body portion. being split longitudinally and hingedly connected as at 2. Offset portions 3 having certain of the extremities thereof curved as at 4 are formed integral with the upper marginal edge of the hingedly connected body portion 1 and have arranged upon their outer extremities, depending arms 5. It may be here noted, that the book mark may be and preferably isformed of spring metal, whereby, when the same is engaged with the pages of a book, the depending spring arm 5 will serve as means for yleldably gripplng the outer faces of the book cover and as a consequence, will positively secure the tapering body portion 1 in position upon the pages, at a point adjacent their jointures at the book backing.
Obviously, by arranging the taperingbody portion 1 between the desiredpages of a book and by engaging the spring arms with the cover thereof, an eliicient marking means is afiorded, whereby reference may be readily had to certain of the subject matter of the book. Furthermore, the various pages of the book when in open position will be prevented from turning, thus, eliminating considerable annoyance, since, the tapering body portion 1 will be securely held in engagement with the pages by means of the depending spring arms 5 which are engaged with the outer faces of the book cover. To close the book, it is to be understood that the hinge connection 2 is arranged directly over the jointure of the various book pages with the backing thereof.
My improved book mark may be formed of varying sizes to accord with different size books, the offset portions 3 being varied in their widths to accord with the thickness of the book, while the depending spring arms 5 may be lengthened or shortened to accord with the size of the book, such as conditions or preference may dictate.
Manifestly the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, 1 consider within the spirit of my in vention.
I claim:
In a book marker of the character described the combination with a body portion comprising a pair of longitudinally extending hingedly connected sections, offset portions formed on the upper edge of said body, and a plurality of spring arms extending from the offset portions in the same direction as the body, the spring arms and hingedly connected sections cooperating to hold the marker in the desired position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
ROSS O. PIERCE.
