Description
w. F. WILMOT.
FAN FOLDED BOOK.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 2. I917- 1,311,733, Patented July 29, 1919.
INVENTOR WITNESSES WILLIAM FRANKLIN WILMOT, 0F ZION CITY, ILLINOIS.
FAN-FOLDED BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 29, 1919.
Application filed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 165.941.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM F. l/VILMoT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zion City, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fan-Folded Books, of
. which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved folder book for use for students, speakers, lawyers, writers and others and for notes, briefs, catalogues or other writings, the object of the invention being to provide an improved folder book every page of which is always visible, in which any page desired can be found and turned to without trouble or mistake, and in which one half of all the pages can be placed on View and arranged in successive order by unfolding the book and the other half of the pages can be likewise viewed by turning the unfolded book over; a further object being to provide an improved folder book any page of which can be readily exposed to View; a further object being to provide an improved folder book the pages of which are each cut away at one corner and provided with indicia or with designating numerals, letters or other symbols all of which are exposed so that any desired page or portion of the book can be instantly identified and the book opened at the deslred point, for reading, reference, comparison, or other use.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a folder book constructed and arranged in accord ance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showin the opposite side thereof.
*ig. 3 is a plan of the same partly opened or unfolded.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the same showing the leaves separated.
Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation of one cornor of the book.
My improved folder book may be of any suitable size and is made from a single sheet or strip of paper or other like fabric which is folded transversely and in reverse directions alternately, as on the lines a, b to form a series of superposed connected leaves 1 each of which excepting the first and last leaves is connected to other leaves by the said folds. Each page is here shown as pro-- vided with a longitudinally arranged ruled line 2, forming a margin 3 for notes, coinment or other writings or memoranda.
.Each leaf is also cut away obliquely at the upper right-hand corner as at 4 and the said cuts are of progressively increased depth, from the back to the front of the folder book; the first leaf and each succeeding pair of leaves are hence of progressively increased length at one side from the bottom of the leaf to the said out and the leaves of each pair are of the same length so that a portion of each alternate leaf is exposed by the cut away corners of the next preceding pair of leaves and the said. exposed portions are provided with indicia or with numerals, letters, or other designating symbols as at 5.
WVhen numerals are used as here shown, for numbering the pages, the numerals are arranged in regular sequence throughout one side of the folder book, when the latter is unfolded and also, in the reverse direction, throughout the other side thereof, as indicated in the drawings, so that when the folder book is folded, as for use, all of the odd numbered pages are exposed at one corner from the front side of the book and the even numbered pages are exposed at the opposite corner from the rear side of the book. Assuming that the folder book contains 28 pages as here shown every alternate page from one to 15 inclusive is exposed, the first completely and the others at one corner, from the front side of the book and every alternate page from 16 to 28 is correspondingly exposed from the rear side of the book, the numbers of the intervening pages being only exposed by opening one of the folds, as will be understood.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A fan folded book comprising a sheet folded alternately in reverse directions to form a series of superposed connected leaves, the first leaf and each succeeding pair of leaves being cut away at one corner and increasing progressively in length at one side to the said cut away corners, and the leaves ofe'ach 7 pair being of the same length so that a portion of each alternate'leaf is exposed by cut away corners of the next preceding pair of leaves.
2. A fan folded book comprising a; sheet t folded alternately in reverse directions-t0 U of each pair being of the same length so that a portion of each'alternate leaf is exposed by 'cut-aaway corners-ofthe next preceding pairof leaves,the'sa1d exposed portions of thezleaves being provided with indicia.'
3. A fan-folded-bookcomprising a sheet folded-alternately in reverse" directions to form a seriesof superposed connectedleaves,
the first leaf and each succeeding pair of leaves being cutaway at one corner and 111- creaslng progressively in length at one side,
:so that a portion of each alternate leaf is exposed by the cutaway corners of the next preceding pair of leaves, the saidexposed portions of the leaves being provided with numerals arranged so that when the book is folded odd numbered pages are exposed at one corner from 'one'side of the book and even numbered pages are exposed at the 0pposite corner from the other side of the 7 book, and so that the pagesare numbered in regular sequence throughout each side of the book when the latter isunfolded.
In testimonywhereof I aflix'my signature.
WILLIAM FRANKLIN WILMOT.
