LAWRENCE HILDEETI-I, OF PINE GROVE, KENTUCKY.
FAN ATTACHBTENT FOB.- CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 14, 1909. Serial No. 495,913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE Hinonn'rri, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Pine Grove, in the county of Clark and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved fan attachment for rocking chairs, adapted to be readily attached to an ordinary rocking chair and to be automatically operated thereby when the rocking chair is in motion so to fan the user of the chair and without any exertion on his part other than that required to rock the chair and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
in the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fan attachment for rocking chairs constructed in accordance with my invention, the chair to which the attachment is secured being indicated in dotted outlines. Fig. 2 is a detail rear elevation of the fan attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail horizpntal sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line et l of F ig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 55 of Fig. 4.
The fan 1 in accordance with my invention is a blower fan comprising a head 2, a base 3 and an intermediate flexible connecting portion 1, the head and base being preferably made of metal or some other rigid material and semispherical in form andthe intermediate portion 4 being preferably made of leather, rubber, or other flexible material or fabric and being of cylindrical form with its upper and lower ends secured respectively around the head and base. The base is provided with a nozzle 5 for supplying air to and discharging the same from the fan.
A standard 6 is provided at its upper end with a horizontally disposed arm 7, at the front end of which is a fork 8, the head of the fan being pivotally mounted in the fork as at 9. An arm 10 depends from the arm 7 and an operating arm 11 for the lower portion or base of the fan is pivotally mounted at the lower end of the arm 10 as at 12. Said operating arm has a fork 13 at its front end in which fork the base of the fan is pivotally mounted as at 1.4;. The rear portion of the operating arm is provided with a plurality of adjusting openings 15. I will now describe means for securing the standards at the back of a rocking chair and for actuating the operating arm 11 by the motion of the chair.
A bar 16 is provided to extend between and for attachment to the chair rockers at a point in rear of the chair. This bar is longitudinally adjustable so that it may be attached to the rockers of chairs of varying widths and is here shown as comprising a pair of members 17 which have upwardly extending portions 18 at their outer ends provided with depending jaws 19 to bear on the outer sides of the chair rockers and which jaws are provided with cushions 20 to prevent them from marring the chair rockers. The said members 17 of the longitudinally adjustable bar are disposed in partially overlapping relation and their overlapping portions are provided with longitudinal slots 21. A yoke 22, which is substantially U-shaped, bears on the uppermost member of the longitudinally adjustable bar and is secured to the members of the said bar by bolts 28 which extend through the slots 21. The standard 6 has a basenr foot 24L which bears on the said yoke and is also secured thereto by the said bolts 23.
Movable jaws 25 are disposed opposite the jaws 19 and provided with horizontal arms 26 which bear against the upper sides of and are slidably connected to the members 17 of the adjustable bar 16. The up-turned portions of said members 17 are provided with screws 27 which bear against the inner sides of the said inovable jaws 25 and serve, in connection with the relatively fixed jaws 19 of the bar and the said movable jaw 25 to clamp the rockers of the chair firmly between said jaws 19, 25, and hence enable the bar 16 to be readily attached to or detached from the chair rockers. The said jaws 25 are preferably also provided with cushions or pads 28. A longitudinally adjustable link 29 is provided, in accordance with my invention, which comprises a pair of partially overlapping members 30 provided with adjusting slots 81 and also slidably connected together by means of guide and engaging ears 32. A hook bolt 33 which passes through the slots 31 serves to clamp the members of the link together and to engage the standard 6 and also firmly secure said standard to said link. Straps 3t are connected to the outer ends of the members of the link and are provided with buckles or other similar devices whereby the said straps may be secured to the sides or standards of the chair back so as to secure the link on the back of the chair and hence cause the link to coact with the bar 16 in detachably securing the standard of the fan to the back of the chair.
A pair of levers 36 are fulcrumed on a rod 37 which connects the upstanding end portions of the yoke 22. The front ends of the said levers are down-turned and a tappet roller 38 is mounted between them as at 39 and bears on the floor at a point between the chair rockers. The levers 36 have their rear ends connected together'by a bar it) and a rod l1 has its lower end pivotally connected to said bar as at 42. A link 43 is attached to the upper end of the rod a1 and may be engaged with any of the adjusting openings 15 of the operating arm 11. It will be understood that the motion of the chair causes the levers 36 to rock and that the connections hereinbefore described between said levers and the arm 11 cause rocking motion to be communicated to said arm, said arm serving to move the base of the fan or blower toward and from the head thereof and hence the fan serves to blow a current of air downwardly on the person in the chair. The length of the stroke of the operating arm 11 may be varied by adjusting the link 43 with reference thereto so as to connect the link by the openings 15 to the said arm 11 at any desired distance from the fulcrum 12 of said arm.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction and combination of devices herein shown and described, as it is evident that modifications may be made therein within the scope of the appended claims.
,VVhat is claimed is 1. In combination with a fan having a movable element a supporting standard for the fan, an operating arm for the movable element of the fan, carried by said standard, means to secure the standard to a rocking chair, said securing means including a longitudinally adjustable bar having means to en gage and grip the chair rockers, an operating lever actuated by the motion of the chair and mounted on said bar and connections between said operating lever and said operating arm for the movable element of the fan.
2. In combination with a fan having a movable element, a supporting standard for the fan, an operating arm for the movable element of the fan, carried by said standard, means to secure the standard to a rocking chair, an operating lever actuated by the motion of the chair-and mounted on said standard securing means and connections between said operating lever and the said operating arm of the movable element of the fan.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAIVR-ENGE I-IILDRETH.
