' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 270,377, dated January 9, 1883,

.To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that [,JAMEs J. Bowxnn, actizen ofthe United States, and a resident of La Otto, in the county ot' Noble and State'otl Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Head-Rests; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l ot' the drawings is a side view of my head-rest. Fig.2 is a top view of the same. Fig.3 is a sectional view of the part B detached from part A, and Fig. 4 is a front view of part B detached from part A.

lhis invention has relation to head-rest attachments for chairs, sofas, railway-seats, Src.; and itconsists in the construction and novel arrangement of the end-slotted and centrallypivoted head at. the upper end of the main bar or standard, the adjustable bowed arms having pivoted pads at their ends, the transverse roller having right-and-left screws working through lugs of' the head, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates the main standard or supportingbar of this attachment, having a forked upper end, a, in which is pivoted the transverse head B. From front to rear through the ends of the head B are made the slots b, which are formed with convex lateral walls c, so that the stems C ofthe bowed arms D, which pass through these slots, will have an easy rocking movement laterally between these walls when said arms are being adjusted to h't the pivoted pads E at their ends to the head. On the back ofthe head B, next to the slot at each end,is formed a lug, d,having a threaded perforation, e, extending transversely through it, and engaging these perforations e e are the right-and-left-threaded set-screws g g, havingv square-d stems h, which extendwithin the adjusting-roller F, which is transversely arranged between the lugs d of the head. \Vhen the roller F is turned the screws gg will be forced out or drawn inward through the lugs (l ofthe head, and by their pressure against the stems of the arms D will cause the pads on the front ends of said arms to be applied to the head of the person occupying the chair with the desired degree ot' pressure. It will therefore be apparent that these arms have a vibratory as well as a reciprocating motion, be-

ing adjustable forward and backward as well as laterally. To secure the arms, under the former adjustment, set-screws 7c are provided, passing through threaded apertures in the head leading to the slots b.

G represents the clamp whereby the attachment is connected to the back ot' a chair. It is provided with a movable jaw, l, which is operated b v a screw, s. Extending from above downward through the rear portion ofthe clamp is a slot, c, through which the lower end of the standard A passes, and is adjustable to regulate the height ofthe rest. In front and in rear ot' the slot c are the convex curved bearings a' and b', the latter being formed by the lugs a, which extend from the slot-wall upward and downward. Through these lugs z threaded pert'orations p are made, serving to receive the set-screws te, which are arranged above and below the slot e, and are designed to bear against the standard A when the latter has been adjusted to the proper height and desired angular position.

The standard A can be made to incline forward or backward, and the head B can be arranged in level position, or may be inclined to either side. The bowed arms can be adjusted forward or back, and their padded ends ontward or inward, according to requirement.. This facility ot' adjustment enables the device to be applied to the head in almost any ordinary position in which it may be held.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

In a head rest attachment, the combination of the adjustable main bar, the bowed arms D, and the pivoted transverse head B, having end slots, b, through which said bowed arms pass, the perforated lugs d ofthe head, the right-and-left set-screws g, and the adjustingroller F, operating said set-screws, subst-antially as specified.
