To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HOGAN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Chairs, Lounges, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view illustrative of my invention. Figs. II and III are'detail vertical sections illustrating the parts in different positions. Fig. IV is a detail view, part in side view and part in section; and shgwing the outer end of one of the pushro s.-

My present invention relates to an improvement on the device shown, described, and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 395,975, issued to me January 8, 1889; and my present invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body of a chair or lounge, and 2 represents the reclining back or rest. To the back, preferably at each side of the chair or lounge, is secured a rack '3. The back is normally held in an upright position by means of spring rods or shafts 4 and ratchets 5, as shown in Fig. I, and as shown and ,fully described in the patent referred to. As they form no part of my present invention, it will be unnecessary to give a description of them here.

6 represents levers, which are pivoted at 7 to the body of the chair or lounge, 2. plate 8, with a cone-shaped bearing 9, being preferably placed between each lever and the body. Each lever has a projection or tooth 10, that engages the notches of the rack 3, located over it, and each lever is provided with an extension 11, which may be engaged by the hand or foot, and which projects to the rear of the chair or to the end of a lounge. Each lever is further provided, or may be further provided,with an extension 12, to which is secured a push-rod 13, preferably by means of a set-screw 14:. On the outer end ofthe rod 13 is a thumb or finger piece or head 15. This is preferably made hollow, so as to conveniently fit the finger or'thumb, as shown in Fig. IV.

The two levers 6 are preferably connected by a rod or shaft 16, on which they are held from horizontal movement by means of setscrews 17. 18 represents pins projecting inward from the plates 8, or from the inner ends of the cones 9, as shown, and around them are coiled springs 19. One end of each spring bears against its lever 6, and'the other end bears against the body 1 of the chair or lounge. The action of these springs is to force the teeth or projections 10 into engagement with the notches of the racks 3.

When it is desired to raise or lower the back of the chair or lounge, a downward pressure is applied to the extensions 11 of the levers, or to the extensions 12, through means of the rods 13, and the teeth 10 are thus forced out of engagement with the racks 3, the springs 19 yielding under this pressure. Then when the pressure is removed the springs will force the teeth into engagementwith the racks again.

To facilitate the removing of the levers, I

secure them to the rods 16 by means of the set-screws 1-7, asstated, and it will be seen that by the simple loosening of these'screws and forcing the levers inward, or toward each other, they will be disengaged from the pins 18, and then they and the rod 16 may be removed from the chair or lounge. they are applied again the springs 19 will be again fitted over the ends of the pins 18, and the device will be, with a very small amount of labor and time, in condition for use.

I claim as my invention- 1. In an attachment for chairs, lounges, &c.,

the combination of the body portion, a back or rest, racks secured to the back or rest, levers pivoted to the body, extensions 11 and 12 on the levers, said extensions 11 being adapted to be pressed down to disengage the levers from the racks, and said extensions 12 being adapted to be pressed in to detach the parts, and rods 13, with heads 15, on the extensions 12, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1

2. In an attachment for chairs, lounges, 850., the combination of the body, back or rest, racks secured to the back or rest, levers piv oted to the body and connected by a rod 16, set-screws 17 for holding the levers on the rod,

pins 18, upon which the levers are mounted,.

Then when v and springs 19, one end of each of which bears against a fixed point and the other end against one of the levers, said levers having extensions adapted to be engaged by the hand or foot for releasing the racks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In an attachment for chairs, lounges, &c., the combination of a body, back or rest, racks secured to the back or rest, plates 8, secured to the body and provided with cone-shaped projections 9, having pins 18, levers fitting over the pins 18, springs surrounding the pins 18, one end of each of said springs bearing against a fixed point and the other end against one of the levers and bearing against the levers, and extensions on said levers adapted to be engaged by the hand or foot for releasing the racks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. In an attachment for chairs, lounges, &c,,

the combination of a body, a back or rest, racks secured to the back or rest, levers pivoted to the body and engaging the racks, projections 12 on the levers, and adjustable rods 13 on the extensions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. In an attachinent for chairs, lounges, &c., the combination of the body, back or rest, racks secured to the back or rest, levers pivoted to the body, a rod fitting in sockets in the levers, set-screws by which the lovers are secured to the rod, and extensions on said levers for pressing them out of engagement with said racks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
