To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Ramtonn NOBLE BUR- Gnoonrr, citizen of the United States, residing .in the city and county of Deliver and ,State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit- Jars; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in- '\f'ention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa nying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in jars or receptacles more especially adapted :for use in putting up fresh fruit where only a relatively small quantity of sugar is used. it is well known that in putting up fruit in this manner it is exceedingly important that the jar be perfectly sealed, since if such is not the case, the fruit will spoil, as often happens with the jars now in vogue.
My object is to produce a jar, which when closed, is perfectly sealed against the entrance of air, and to this end the invention consists ofthe features hereinafter described and claimed, all of which will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.

projects slightly below the upper edge of the jar top (5. The body part of the cap member 12 is provided with a washer 15 forming a gasket which lits closely around the neck 8 and extends outwardly over the edge of the jar, thus completely sealing the latter when the cap is applied..
The cap member 12 is provided with a lever arm 16 pivotally connected therewith as shown at 17. This lever arm is curved to fit around the hollow neck 9 when not in use, in which event it does not protrude beyond the cover of the jar. Then however it is desired to use the arm lever for removing tlie cover from the jar, the said arm is thrown outwardly to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which event its outer extremity protrudes considerably beyond the body of the jar, and gives the operator an important leverage v'for manipulating the cap. In applying the cap to the jar, the lever arm 1G gives the user an opportunity to hold the cap against slipping in the hand, when the lever is in the full line position in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing description the use of my improved fruit jar cap will be readily understood. Assuming that the two members 7 and 12 are connected, by threading them together, the member 7 is then screwed into the jar top by the use of the lever arm 1G until the member 12 has reached a position causing its gasket to press tightly upon the upper edge of the jar, sealing` the joint between the jar top and the body portion of the member 7. rlhe lover arm is then thrown to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawing, the base of the jar top is provided with an interiorly projecting ledge 18 forming a seat for a rubber washer 19 which vthe member '7 of the cap engages when the latter is applied to the jar. This washer cooperates with the gasket 15 to form a perfect seal for the jar when the cap is applied.
Having thus described my invention, wh at I claim is:
1. The combination with a fruit ar having` an interiorly threaded top, of a two part cap composed of a body member adapted to enter the top of the jar and having a threaded neck, and a second member having a hollow neck to receive the neck of the body member, the second member having a disk portion covering the body member and threaded neck projecting beyondthe top of the jar and provided with a gasket sealing` the joint between the jar and the body member, substantially as described.
2. A jar cap composed of an eXtei-iorly threaded body member having a threaded neck and a cooperating member having a hollow neck threaded to receive the neck of the body member and having a disk portion overlapping the body member and provided with a gasket for the purpose set forth.
8. A jar cap composed of two separable members, the one member being adapted to enter the top of the ja and provided with a the other member having a hollow neck threaded to receive the neck of the first named member and having a disk 'portion overlapping the bodyy part of the first named member and provided with a'gasket for the purpose set forth.
4t. A jar cap composed of two members having a threaded correction, one member being adapted to enter the top of the jar, while the other member overlaps the first named member and is ket to seal the joint between the body member and the jar top, substantially as described.
5. A fruit jar having an interiorly projecting ledge at the base of'its top, the latter being interiorly threaded, a washer resting on said ledge and a cap adapted-to enter the jar top and rest upon the said washer, the cap consisting' of two members and an interposed gasket overlapping the top of the and cooperating with the said washer to form a double seal.
