Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN JUDKINS, 0F LONDON, ONTARO, CANADA.
CLOSUBE .FOR GLASS JARS.
rseaeen Application led June 8,
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN JUDKINS, oi' the city of London, county of Middlesex, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Glass Jars7 ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures particularly adapted ior wide mouthed glass jars such as are used ttor preserving perishable goods and my object is to devise a closure which is easily applied and which will enable a light seal to be easily eifected.
l attain my object by means of the. constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings 1n which- Figure l is a vertical section of a part of a fruit jar provided with my improved closure;
Fig. 2 a side elevation ot the same;
Fig. 3 a plan View of the same; and
Fig. l a side elevation of the U-section metal ring with its ends disconnected.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the dltferent iigures.
l is a jar. Around the mouth of the Jar is iormed the usual seat 2 for a packing ring 3. An annular external collar 4 is 'formed around the ar below said seat. 5 is the cover, which is preferably, though not necessarily, made with a flat top externally. 0n the collar 4: is detachably secured a U- section metal ring 6. While any suitable means may be employed to secure this in position, l prefer to employ the arrangement shown particularly in Figs. 2 and e. The ring is transversely divided, and through one end is formed a slot 7. The other end is provided with a tongue 8, which is passed through the slot 7 and then bent Hat as shown in F ig. 2. To this ring are welded the lower part-s of the stems 9, the

upper ends of which are threaded. These stems extend through suitable openings in the metal pressure plate l0 and on their upper ends are adapted to be screwed the wing nuts ll. it is evident that by screwing down these nuts that the pressure plate will be caused to bear upon the cover with sufficient pressure to hold its edges in air-tight engagement with the packing ring 3.
When it is desired to remove the cover, the nuts are removed, the pressure plate lifted off and the cover pried oft'. The closing device is readily completely disconnected at any time by bending back the tongue 8 and removing the icl-section ring.
lt will be seen that from the above description my closure will satisfactorily attain the objects ot my invention as set out in the preamble of this specification.
W hat l claim as my invention is l. A jar having a seat for a packing ring termed around its mouth and an annular external collar below said seat, in combination with a U-section metal ring detachably secured in position over said collar; threadsaid collar; a cover for the jar; a pressure plate adapted to engage the cover and having holes therein through which the threaded stems pass; and wing nuts threaded on pressure plate against the cover.
2. A jar closure constructed as set forth in claim l in which the U-section ring is transversely divided, one end having a slot therein and the other being provided with a tongue passing through the slot and bent over to secure the ring in place.
Signed at London, Ontario7 Canada, this 28th day of May7 1920.
