Description

N0. 69l,366. Patenied Jan. 2|. I902.
J. A. DONALD &. H. L. BUSSEY.
FRUIT JAR AND COVER.
(Application filed May 11. 1901.)
(No Model.)
JOHN ALFRED DONALD AND HERBERT LEROY BUSSEY, OF SOUTH RYEGATE, VERMONT.
FRUIT-JAR AND COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,366, dated January 21, 1902.
Application filed May 11. 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we,JoHN ALFRED DONALD and HERBERT LEROY BUSSEY, citizens of the United States, and residents of South Ryegate, county of Caledonia, and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars and Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw- [0 ings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to fruit-jars and covers, the object thereof being to provide an is improved means for hermeticallysealing fruitjars, whereby they may be maintained in securely-closed condition, but can be readily opened when desired without the necessity of using an auxiliary instrument.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of our improved device, showing the same closed. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on the line an cc of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation taken on the line 'y y of Fig. 1 and illustrating the op- 0 eration of closing the device.
In the practice of our invention we employ,
. primarily, a jar A, composed of glass, porcelain, or other suitable material and being of any desired diameter and height. The mouth of this said jar embodies an elliptical flange A, and a shoulder a is formed within the jar at the intersection of the said flange and the jar-body.
As a means for closing the jar we employ 40 an elliptical disk B, which has an endless flange Z) for engagement with the shoulder'a of the jar. This said flange has a rubber washer O placed upon its upper surface for maintainin g an air-tight joint with the shoulder a.
Extended upwardly and vertically from the center of the disk B is a spindle B, which has a threaded upper end I). This spindle passes through an opening in a cap D, which has a flange 01 extended downwardly therefrom for engagement with the jar-neck.
Serial No. 59,786. (No model.)
As ameans for tightening and fastening the parts together we employ a thumb-nut E, which is threaded on the spindle B and bears against the upper surface of the cap D.
In the operation and use of the invention thejar is first filled. The disk B is then placed within the jar, as illustrated by Fig. 3 of the drawings. It is then turned around and brought into proper relative arrangement with the shoulder a, as illustrated by Fig. 2 of the drawings, after which the cap D is placed over the spindle B and the thumb-nut E adjusted and screwed into place, thus providin g an efficient means for closing the jar. When it is desired to open the jar, it is simply necessary to remove the thumb-nut and the cap, and then side pressure against the upper end of the spindle B Will readily detach the disk B, whereby it can be easily turned and removed.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fruit-jar, the combination with the jarbody A, having an elliptical neck A, integral therewith, and the shoulder a, formed in said body at the intersection of said neck and body; of the disk B, formed with the shoulder 17, adapted to press upon the shoulder a; and the upwardly-extending spindle B,the gasket 0, adapted to be interposed between said shoulders; the cap D, formed with the lip d, adapted to fit over said elliptical neck; and the thumb-nut E, engaging the screw 1), on said spindle, and together with said spindle, disk, gasket and cap closing the mouth of said jar, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have signed our names, in the presence of two .witnesses, this 3d day of May, 1901.
