PAUL HENRY SOENTGEN, OF FORD CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
BBACE FOR DUMP-WAGONS.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed January 9, 1909. Serial No. 471,467.
Beit'known that 1, PAUL HENRY SonN'r- GEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ford'City, in the county of Armstrongand State of Pennsylvania, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Braces for Dump-Wagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to theaccompanying draw- This invention relatesto a brace for dump wagons, and more particularly for that type of wagon having a bed provided with a loose bottom composed of a plurality ol longitudinaljbars or boards adapted to betilted to deposit the dumpable material from the,
wagon. V I
The object of my invention is to provide a detachable metallic brace for holding the sides of a wagon and preventing the sides from spreading or bulging due to a heavy load in the wagon.
IVith the above and other objects in view, which will more readilyappear as the invention is better understood; the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts" to be presently de scribed, and then claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross sec- 'tional view of the body of a wagon equipped. with my brace, and Fig. '2 is a detached detail perspective view of the brace, with the connecting chains broken away.
To put my invention into practice, I pro vide two side straps 1, preferably made of metal. "lhe upper ends of these straps are bent inwardly as at 2 to fit over the upper I edges of the sides 3 of the wagon bed, and are then bent downwardly so as to engage with the inner; faces of said sides 3, these downwardly extending portions of the straps being provided with sockets 4 for the reception of one endo'l' the links 5., H Connected to each link'5 is "a chain section 6, the chain section connected to one of'th'e' links 5 being providedat itstlree end with a swinging hook 7, providing means wherebythe chain section carried byone link 5 can be adjustably connected to the opposing chain section, and the chain sections drawntaut to prevent spreading or bulging ol' the wagon bed sides 3. The lower ends of the straps 1 are bent outwardly and upwardly to provide'eyes 8, which receive one end of links 9, similar in construction to the links 5. Each link 9 carries a chain section 10, the chain section carried by one of the links 9 being provided with a swinging hook 7, so that the chain sections 10 may be adjustably connected together and drawn taut so as to hold the wagon bed sides 3 from spreading at the bottom of said bed. The lower ends of the straps 1 lie in such position that the chain sections 10 will extend across the bed below the bottom 11 thereof, and as this bottom 11 in wagon beds of this character is generally made of a plube evident that any one or all of these bars or boards may be tilted so as to readily discharge the contents of the wagon bed. hen the chain underneath the bed is drawn taut, it tends to hold these independent bars or boards against accidental displacement,
but immediately upon the chain sections of the lower chain being disconnected, the bars or boards 11 can then be easily manipulated to discharge the load.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, is
A wagon bed brace comprising a pair of opposed vertical side straps adapted to engage the sides of a wagon bed, each strap having its upper end bent inwardly to engage the upper edge of its respective side of the wagon bed and then. bent downwardly to engage the inner face of said wagon bed side, said downwardly bent portion being provided with a socket, a link hung in said socket, the lower end of each strap being bent outwardly and upwardly to form an eye, a link hung in said eye, chain sections carried by the links of each strap, and means for adjustably connecting the chain sections of the opposing straps together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PAUL HENRY SOENTGEN.
