PAPER BUCKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,910, dated September '7, 1880. Application filed March 3, 1880. (Model!) To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER H. HIoKs, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Buckets or Vessels Made from Paper; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description and specification of the same, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, making part thereof.

Before my invention, paper vessels had been made from the blank used by me, and a stiffening-hoop had been held about the top of metallic vessels by turning the metal partially about said hoop, and covers had been made strengthened by strips fastened across their surfaces by nails or other similar means.

My invention relates to certain improvements in paper buckets and their covers made and used previous to mine, by which I add strength both to the bucket and its cover in a cheap and convenient manner, so that they will keep their shape when the bucket is filled with moist materials.

To this end my invention consists in certain combinations ofelements setforth in the claims at the end of this specification.

In order that persons skilled in the art may understand, make, and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, referring to the drawings, in which Figure 1 is aplan view of one quarter of the well-known sheet or blank from which my out other fastening.

brace the cover better than they would if on one side only. Paper covers made previous to my invention have been entirely useless 5 5 because the moisture of the contents of the bucket caused them to sink to the bottom, and they did not keep the buckets in shape,

Fig. 6 is a top view of my bucket with the cover 0 in its place, the bracing-strips a. b resting on the inner surface of the walls of the bucket, and not on top, to keep the bucket in shape. The said bracing-sticks also keep the cover in shape when dampened, and prevent it from settling into the bucket when filled with moist materials, as it otherwise would do.

Fig. 7 is a side view of the same and a part section of Fig. 6 on the central line tt, showing a central section of the cover and the manner in which I have passed the bracing-sticks through the said cover on diameter-lines; but they may pass through on other lines.

It will be seen that each stick passes through the body of the cover at two points, so as to leave the central portion of each stick on one side and the two ends on the opposite side of 8 5 said cover 0.

I have shown my bucket as round at the top and rectangular at the bottom; but it may be made in any other form which will permit the corners of the folded blank to be held be- 0 tween the stiffening-piece 7c and the walls of the bucket. The cover also must be made to suit the shape of the bucket on which it is to be used.

The hail of the bucket is shown fastened 5 around the stiffening-piece on opposite sides.

My bucket thus constructed is both cheap and strong, and supplies the deficiences of those used before my invention.

Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I have embodied it, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The tight paper bucket, substantially as shown and described, having the projecting corners of the blank from which it is formed folded over and entirely around the stiffeningpiece and up between said stiffening-piece and the walls of the bucket to support it in com bination with said stiffening-piece, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. The combination of a paper bucket and 10 the paper cover described, braced by strips,

each of which passes through the cover at two points, so that the ends of each are upon one side of said cover and the central portion is upon the opposite side of the same, for the 15 purpose of strengthening the cover and of bracing the walls of the bucket, substantially as set forth. 7

3. The paper cover for a paper bucket, provided with a strengthening brace or braces passing through perforations in said cover, so that the ends of each brace are upon one side and the central portion of each brace is upon the opposite side of the same, for the purpose of strengthening the cover, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
