Description

' PATENTBD 001?. s, 1905.
S UPON MINE CARS.
J. M. WYSO DEVICE FOR HOLDING CHECK APPLIGAIION LED JU UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING CHECKS UPON MINE-CARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 3, 1905.
Application filed June 8, 1905. Serial No. 264,317.
To all whmnit may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES MILLER VVYsoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mannering, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Devices for Holding Checks upon Mine-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for attaching a miners check to a car.
More particularly the invention provides means whereby the check is attached to the car before the same is filled with coal or ore and can only be detached after the coal or ore has been dumped or unloaded.
Furthermore, the invention provides means comprising a board which is adapted to be hinged to the inside of the car, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, and at the same time hang adjacent to the vertical portion of the side of the car. This hinged connection is formed by a rod of substantially the same length as the board, which is adapted to act as a bolt for both of the hinges, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Moreover, the invention provides means whereby the miners check may be attached to the car comprising a rod, one end of which is made in a hooked form, being adapted to enter and reenter the vertical side of the car, the other end of said rod being bent at right angles, the bent portion being inserted in an aperture in a roll formed at the end of one of the hinge members. The hooked portion of said rod is adapted to carry the miners check, said check being attached to the hook before the same reenter-s the vertical side of the car.
Another object of the invention is to supply the miner with a set of checks containing the number which is assigned to each respective man, which corresponds with the number upon the pay-roll, each check being attached to the car before the same is loaded, and after it is loaded the car when dumped is credited to the number which is assigned to each respective miner, said number being also entered on the pay-roll.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same comprises the peculiar construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which I Fig. l is a perspective view looking into the inside of a miners car, showing approximately the detailed construction of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear end view, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a View with the cooperating parts of the invention detached. Fig. 4 is a slight modification of the application of my invention, and Fig. 5 is still another modification of the invention.
Reference-now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of a suitable car adapted to carry coal, ore, or any other material, having hinged to the side thereof a suitable wood board B, as shown in the accompanying drawings. The hinged connection between the hardwood board and the side of the car comprises a pair of hinge members C, which are secured to the side of the car by any suitable fastening means, and a pair of hinge members 0, which are secured to the side of the hardwood board by any suitable fastening means, one of said hinge members being extended to the lower edge of said board, as shown in Figs. 2 and3 of the drawings, and formed in the shape of a roll D, having an aperture D adapted to receive the end E of a rod E, said end being formed by bending said rod at right angles, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The other end of said rod is formed into ahook F, which is adapted to be inserted through apertures in the side of the car opposite the side carrying the hardwood board, and a portion F of said hook is adapted to reenter the side of the car, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Before this rod and the hook upon the end thereof are placed in the correct position, prior to filling the car with coal or ore, a suitable miners check G is attached, the number upon said check corresponding to the nulilnber of the miner as entered upon the payro In Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification of a miners car, whereby the rod carrying the miners check is disposed on an angle. In practice I have found in some instances that the sides of the car are made of thin material, and in this case I have provided some protection for the end of the hook upon the rod to prevent the same from being bent down. This protection comprises a block H, adapted to be spiked or bolted or otherwise secured to the side of the car, as shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the accompanying drawings.
The check which is adapted to be connected to the book of the rod may be used elsewhere to denote what kind or quantity of coal or ore the car contains.
From the foregoing description of the detailed construction of my invention it will be readily understood how the invention is applied to a car, whereby a very eiiicient means is provided for attaching a miners check to the car.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A device for holding checks upon cars comprising, in combination with a car, a board, strap-hinges secured to the inner face of the car and to which said board is connected, one of said hinges extending beyond the swinging end of the board and turned to form an eye, a rod having an angled end engaging said eye, and its other end bent to form a hook, designed to pass through an aperture in the side wall of the car, and adapted to receive and hold a check, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MILLER WYSOR.
