FREDERICK M. SCHMIDT, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
, CHUTE ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chute Attachments,- of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved chute and more particularly to a protector attachment therefor.
The primary object of the invention contemplates the provision of an attachment for coal chutes or conveyers wherein the coal acted upon is retained within the chute proper and prevented from fallingover the sides thereof during its conveyance, the attachment serving as a guide and forming a discharge mouth through which the coal is discharged into the window, door or the opening as the case may be.
A further object of theinvention resides in the provision of a coal chute attachment which is capable of both lateral and longitudinal adjustment so as to permit operation in various positions upon an inclined or converged chute, the body or back of the protector attachment being disposed for Yengagement with the sides of the chute to form a support for the said attachment when in a vertical or operative position.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto. I
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coal chute, with an attachment comprising my invention employed in connection therewith; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the device with the guide strips removed and the protector swung in an inoperative position; Fig. l is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the applicationof the protector attached to a chute of slightly different construction; and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view on the line 55of Fig. 4t.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentefl De 14 1915 Application filed September 23, 1913.
Serial No. 791,395.
Before proceeding with the description of the drawings, I desire to call particular at tention to the fact that while I have evolved my lnvention with particular reference to its application in connection with coal chutes, the same may be readily utilized in connection with chutes, conveyers, troughs, etc., adapted for the conveyance of various other articles, goods or merchandise.
Referring now to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my lnvention the numeral 1 designates the base or bottom of an ordinary coal chute in connection with which the attachment comprising my invention is employed, the said bottom having the usual sides 2 secured in any suitable manner thereto.
Intermediate the ends of the chute, which will be hereinafter designated in its entirety by the numeral 1, the attachment is secured, the said attachment comprising a body portion 3 the lower outer edges of which are cut or shaped to form shoulders 4, which when the said body is swung into an operative or vertical position serve as a support therefor, the shoulders engaging the upper edges of the sides 2 of the chute. Extensions 5 are formed, one upon each of the sections of which said body 8 is composed, the eX- tensions being pivotally secured to extensions 6 of an attaching or clamp member 7 through the medium of a pin or bolt 8 and nut 9. Ears 10 are formed integrally with the clamp section 7 of the clamp, said ears being adjustably fastened by means of a bolt 11 and nut 12 preferably arranged to fit beneath the base of the chute 1 as illustrated to advantage in Fig. 5 of the drawings. To limit the clamp 7 againstmovement independent of the chute 1, extensions 13 are formed integrally with and upon the extremities of the sections 7 of which the clamp is composed,.said extensions 13 overlapping the sides 2 of the chute and maintaining the clamp immovable when locked or fastened by the manipulation of the nut 12.
When it is desired that the protector should be enlarged or adjusted laterally, the sections of which the body 3 is composed are spread, a pin 14; serving as a pivot for the said two sections as well as a fastening element to tightly secure the said two sections together. An arcuate slot 15 is formed within one of the sections through which a pin 16 extends, the latter being stationary with respect to one of the sections and maintained in an adjusted position by means of a nut 17 threaded thereon.
By the provision of the extensions 5 of the body 3 it will be seen that an opening or discharge mouth is formed through which the coal when acted upon is free to pass. To prevent spilling of the coal over the sides 2 of the chute, guide strips 18 are provided, the said strips being preferably composed of canvas or other flexible material and supported by means of bars'19 extending at an angle from a point 20 at the top of the protector 3 to a point 21 where they are secured to the sides 2 of the chute, thereby forming walls or guide strips on the protector to retain the coal within the chute and guide the same to the opening or discharge mouth provided therefor.-
As a support for the chute when in an operative position, I provide a clamp, designated in itsentirety by the numeral 22, the said clamp being secured to and adjustably fastened to the chute l, in much the same manner as the clamp 7 above mentioned, the extensions 23 however, of the latter clamp being disposed for engagement With the sill of the window or opening through which the coal is discharged to serve as a support for the chute and prevent the sliding of the latter through the said opening during operation.
From the above, taken in connection with the acconipanying drawings it will be seen that the clamp 7 may be adjusted longitudinally throughout the length of the chute 1, thereby permitting longitudinal adjustment of the protector attachment; that by con structing the protector of two independent sections, one of which is provided with an arcuate slot 15, lateral adjustment of the said protector is permitted; and that when unused, the guide strips 18 and bar 19 may be removed and the protector swung parallel with the chute l and in an inoperative position, the sides of the protector overlapping the sides of the chute to permit compact folding of the former upon the latter.
It will be understood that the above description and the accompanying drawings comprehend onl the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is:
