Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section, taken through and showing the relative arrangement of the crown bar of our improvements, the adjusting screw, and the spring-pressed nut receiving the latter. Fig. i is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line d-e of Fig. 3, looking downwardly.

A is a vessel in the form of a crock, having a normally closed discharge aperture a and also having a top flange b. In the said vessel we prefer, for obvious reasons, to removably arrange a basket comprising a bottom 0 formed of a number of spaced and connected wood strips, and a cylinder d, separable from the bottom 0 and also formed of a number of spaced and connected wood strips. In the bottom 0 and the cylinder at, the wood strips are connected by Wires 0 and J, respectively, having laterally bent portions d interposed between the wood strips with a view of retaining the latter in the spaced relation shown; the ends of the wires 0 being bent against the outer strips of the bottom, and the ends of the wires a being suitably connected.

said body B is in the form of a resilient band, the ends of which are designed to be connected through the medium of a bolt C so as to secure the same on the crock below the flange 1) thereof. The said body B is pro vided with a lixed upright D, located diametrically opposite the bolt O, and apertured adjacent to its upper end, as indicated by 0 and it is also provided with a fastening link E, hinged on the bolt C; said link being preferably U -shaped.
In addition to the body or main frame 13 and the described appurtenances thereof, our improvements comprise a crown bar I having a central, vertically-disposed aperture e and depending apertured projection f and also having end hooks g, an adjusting screw G extending through and guided in the aperture 0 of the bar F and having a crank it at its upper end and also having its lower end swiveled or otherwise arranged to bear upon a follower I I, disposed in the before de scribed basket, and a nut 1. receiving and engaging the screw G and connected with a spring having arms J, disposed and movable longitudinally in the apertured projections f and effecting connection between the nut and the bar F.
In the practical use of our improvements, grapes or other fruit or substance to be pressed is placed in the basket positioned in the crock A, after which the hook at one end of the bar I is disposed in the aperture of the fixed upright D, and the fastener link .E is placed over the hook at the opposite end The said arrangement and connection of the bar I disposes the follower ll in the basket and above the substance to be pressed, and from this it follows that when the screw G is turned downwardly through the nut I the follower Ii will be crowded or pressed against the substance in the basket. It will also be understood that subsequent to the adjustment of the screw G, the spring J will xert considerable downward pressure on the screw and the nut and consequently will yieldingly press the follower against the substance in the basket, as is desirable.
When it is desired to remove the pressed substance from the crock, the same may be readily accomplished after the link O is disengaged from the crown bar F and said crown bar is disengaged from the upright D to permit of the removal of the follower II from the crock.
The construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of our invention of which we are cognizant, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of parts may be made, as fairly fall within the scope of our invention as defined in the claims appended.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: i
1. The combination in a press, of an apertured bar, a screw extending loosely through the same and equipped with a follower, a nut receiving and engaging the screw at a point intermediate the bar and the follower, and means interposed between the bar and the nut for yieldingly pressing the latter in a direction away from the former.
2. The combination in a press, of a bar having an aperture and also having apertured projections at opposite sides of said aperture, a screw extending loosely through the aperture of the bar and equipped with a follower, a nut receiving and engaging the screw at a point intermediate the bar and the follower, and a spring for exerting yielding pressure on the nut in a direction away from the bar; the said spring having arms extending longitudinally through the apertured projections of the bar.
8. In a press, the combination of a band having an upright, means for connecting the ends of the band, a swinging link fastener connected with the band, a bar connected with the upright and adapted to be engaged and detachably held by the link fastener and having an aperture, a screw extending through the aperture of the bar and equipped with a follower, a nut receiving and engaging the screw at a point intermediate the bar and the follower, and means interposed be tween the bar and the nut for yieldingly pressing the latter in a direction away from theformer.
4. In a press, the combination of a resilient band having an upright in the upper portion of which is an aperture, means dotachably connecting the ends of the band, a link fastener hinged on said means and having an aperture in its upper portion, a crown bar having hooks at its ends removably arranged in the apertures of the upright and link and also having a central aperture and depending apertured projections at opposite sides of said aperture, a screw extending through the aperture ofthe bar and equipped with a follower, a nut receiving and engaging the screw at a point between the bar and the follower, and a spring connected with the nut and having arms extending longitudinally through the apertured projections of the bar.
5. The combination in a press, of an apertured bar, a screw extending loosely through the same, a follower adapted to be moved by the screw, a nut-receivin and engaging the screw, at the side of the bar that the follower is located, and means between the bar and the nut for yieldingly pressing the latter away from the former.
