UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. BARON, 0F TIFFITN', OHIO.
TOP FOR was, 8w.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns S. BARON, of Tiflin, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tops for Jugs, .&c., and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a top or cover for syrup and other jugs, jars, Steins, etc., having a connection with the vessel that has the important character istic of secure, but easy and, therefore, inexpensive application and detachability from the vessel, and in particular my object is to provide a connecting means requiring a minimum of metal and yet afiording a stout, firm support.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of enough of a syrup jug to illustrate an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view show ing the parts separated, and illustrating a different embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 2, illustrating still another embodiment of my invention.
The syrup jug 10 illustrated, and its hinged cover 11, are in general of ordinary construction. The design of the jug and the form or shape of the cover may be varied from what is illustrated without departure from the scope of my invention. The cover is a hinged or pivoted one having at the handle side of the jug an upturned handle piece 12 and a pair of rearwardly projecting hinge ears 13 through which, and through similar cars 14 on an attaching clip-15, a pivot pin 16 passes around which is placed a coil spring 17 which, at one end bears on the top of the clip and at the other end bears against the thumb piece and yieldingly holds the lid or cover shut, as is usual. The attaching clip 15 is in the form of an inverted U, it comprising a top cross piece and two downwardly extending legs which, respectively, areseated in vertical channels or recesses 180 on opposite sides of an out- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly projecting block or lug 18 upon the jug, and near the top thereof and either or both of said legs at its lower end has a latch form to interlock with a suitable projection on said lug to detachably connect the clip thereto. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the latch 19 is formed by a shoulder produced by a bend in the lower part of the leg which leaves the end of the lug sufficiently free so that it may be readily caught by the thumb to disengage the leg from the lug when it is desired to move the clip and the attached cover from the vessel, and but one of the legs is thus formed, the other being a simple straight piece. As shown in Fig. 3 the latch is in the form of a rounded teat 20 formed by pressing a part of the metal leg inward, and a correspondingly shaped cavity 200 is formed in the side of the jug lug, and in this case both legs are provided with the latch. As shown in Fig.
t, the latch is in the form of a hole or slot 21 punched in one of the legs which cooperates with a similarly shaped lug 22 formed on a side of the jug lug 18.
It will be evident that but a minimum of metal is required to make my clip, and yet by reason of its form and that of the lug on the jug, a stiff support is provided so that accidental disengagement of the cover from the jug cannot occur, and yet most easily and conveniently the cover can be applied to and removed from the jug or vessel.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the hinge lugs on the cover are formed on a piece separate from the handle 28, the latter having on opposite sides lugs that are turned over the hinge ears carrying member, but, of course, the hinge ears of the cover and the hand piece may be integral, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be understood that the latchforming leg has sufficient elasticity to enable it to be readily sprung into and out of engagement with its interlocking projection or member on the lug.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is The combination of a vessel, its cover, a
detachable clip connecting the cover and.
vessel, said clip comprising a top cross piece connection with the top of the clip to latch with an upturned flange having extremities and unlatch it. 10 that form hinge-ears for the cover, and In testimony that I claim the foregoing I downwardly extending legs Whose lower have hereunto set my hand.
ends are free, and a lug on the vessel having CHARLES S. BARON. a leg-receiving channel, the lug and leg Vitnesses:
having cooperating latch-forming members, NORMAN W. PETERS,
and the leg being laterally movable on its RUSI-ITON D. NILES.
