In the drawings, the detachable cover is shown applied to a pitcher or jug 1, which may be of any suitable shape, form or configuration it being of course understood that the shape or outline of the cover will correspond with the particular form of pitcher for which it is intended. Said pitcher is provided with the usual pouring lip 2 and handle 3.

The cover comprises essentially two members, to wit, a fixed member 4, which is stationary on the pitcher, and a member 5 movable relatively thereto, which covers the pitcher top and protects its contents from dirt. dust and other foreign matter. The fixed member 4 is pressed, stamped or otherwise formed of sheet metal, having a substantially straight outer portion 6 lying on the outer surface of the pitcher wall just above the handle 3, and which may be provided with a central slot in its lower end, shown as a V-shaped opening, forming two depending tongues 7 lying on opposite sides of the handle 3 and preventing the stationary member from moving laterally on the wall of the pitcher. The stationary and" movable men-beret)? th'e'co'ver are connected by a simple form of hinge whose parts are preferably integral portions of said two members, so that the entire cover comprises only said members and requires no pintle, springs, wires or other similar devices. As shown, the stationary member 4c is provided with two outwardly extending cars 11 which preferably lie below the upper end of the hook or loop 8, so that the axis of the hinge is below the upper edge of the pitcher wall, whereby the cover moves upwardly and outwardly when turned upon its hinge. The movable member 5 is also provided with two cars 12, which preferably depend from the rearwardly extending handle member 10. Suitable interlocking hinge connections are pro vided on these two pairs of cars, the ears of one pair being preferably provided with pro-. jections which engage depressions or openings in the ears of the other pair. As illustrated, the ears of one pair, such as the ears 12 of the cover, are punched or pressed to provide teats or projections 13, which ex tend inwardly toward each other and engage openings in the ears 11 of the stationary member 4. The resiliency of the metal is suflicient'to enable the ears of the stationary member 4, to be sprung in between the ears of the movable member 5 to enable the projections 13 to be engaged with their. openings or depressions for assembling the two parts of the cover.

In its closed position, as indicated in Fig. 1, the inner face of the movable cover member 5 rests upon and is supported by the upper end of the loop or bend 8 of the stationary member 4, and also rests upon the periphery of the wall of the pitcher. This support relieves the hinge parts of strain in a vertical direction, while strain in a lateral direction is prevented by the engagement of the flange of the cover with the pitcher wall and the tongues 7 with the handle 3.

This cover can be readily manufactured by simple stamping and pressing operations and is easily assembled by merely pressing the parts together. It can be applied readily to any form of pitcher and is conveniently manipulated by the thumb or finger in the usual position of the hand when holding the pitcher.

What I claim is:

l. A detachable cover for pitchers or jugs, comprising a bent sheet metal member arranged to hook. over the edge of a pitcher and provided with a pair of outwardly extending ears, a movable cover member having an outwardly extending sheet metal han dle member provided with a pair of ears, and projections on the ears of one of said pairs arrangedto resiliently engage openings or depressions 1n the ears of the other Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

2. A detachable cover for pitchers or jugs, comprising a bent sheet metal member arranged to hook over the edge of a pitcher and provided with a pair of outwardly extending ears, a movable cover member having an outwardly extending handle member of resilient mate-rial provided with a pair of ears, and projections on the ears of said movable cover member arranged to engage openings in the ears of the other member and forming a hinge connection therebetween. 7

3. A detachable coverfor pitchers or jugs, comprising a bent sheet metal member arranged to hook over the edge of a pitcher and retained by friction thereon, said member being provided below the upper edge of said pitcher with a pair of outwardly extending ears, a cover having an outwardly extending handle member, a pairof depending ears on said handle member, and projections on the ears of one of said pairs arranged to engage openings or depressions in the ears of the other pair and forming a hinge connection therebetween.
