. TOBACCO PIPE. APPLIOATION FILED 001223, 1908.

GOTTFRIED D. W. SCHMIDT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 23, 1908. Serial No. 459,190.
Patented June 8, 1909.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTFRIED D. W. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the bowl of a tobacco-pipe, and has for its object to prevent the passing of nicotin and tobacco ash from the bowl through the stem and mouth-piece, to improve the draft and clarify the smoke before it enters the stem, and to enable the bowl to be readily and thoroughly cleansed when desired.
The invention consists in features of novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, whereon, the figure is a central vertical longitudinal section through my improved tobacco-pipe as preferably constructed.
a represents my improved tobacco-pipe in which the bowl is separately constructed and adapted to be inserted, preferably partway of its depth from the bottom, within a cup or receptacle 0, which is preferably integral with the stem (Z having the usual passage 1 therethrough and through the mouth-piece e, the inlet of the assage 1 opening into the cup 0 at a suitable distance below its upper edge or rim 2, through the surrounding wall 3 on the inside of the cup 0, which is diametrically somewhat larger than the outside of the bowl I) so as to form an annular space 4 thereat between the bowl I) and the said wall, a similar space 4 communicating with the space 4, being left between the bottom of the bowl I) and the floor 5 of the cup 0. The bowl 7) is preferably formed externally at a distance from the bottom thereof equal to the internal depth of the cup 0 less the depth of the space 4, with a surrounding shoulder 6, either configured as shown or in the nature of an ornamental molding, and for a suitable distance downward therefrom with a circumferential screw-threaded portion 7, which on inserting the lower part of the bowl 1) within the cup 0 and rotating the bowl 12 engages with a correspondingly screw-threaded portion 7 formed in the surrounding wall 3 of the cup 0 at and adjacent to the rim 2, the
shoulder 6 in the assembled position of the parts bearing upon the rim 2 and thereby limiting the downward movement of the bowl I) for forming the bottom space 4 within the cup 0 and at the same time hermetically closing the upper part of the annular space 4 at the junction of the bowl I) with the cup 0 above the inlet of the passage 1 through the stem (1.
Through the bottom of the bowl I) is formed a suitable opening 8 into the space 44, the opening 8 as shown in the figure being preferably the full diametrical area of the bowl I) thereat.
By the above construction, owing to the inlet of the passage 1 opening into the space 4 considerably above the bottom space 4 and so being completely separated from the tobacco within the bowl I) it cannot be choked therewith as continually occurs in an ordinary pipe to the annoyance and detriment of the smoker. Moreover, owing to the extended and annular shape of the space 1, a free draft is maintained and nicotin from the tobacco prevented from entering the passage 1. Furthermore, by unscrewing and removing the bowl I), the latter and the cup 0 can be readily and thoroughly cleansed when necessary.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A tobacco pipe, comprising a cup, a bottomless bowl removably fixed within the cup at a suitable distance externally from the surrounding wall and floor thereof, the said floor being adapted to support the tobacco contained by the said bowl, a stem projecting outward from and having a passage-way therethrough adapted to open into, the space between the cup and bowl above the said floor, and means for hermetically closing the said space at the junction of the cup and bowl with each other, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GOTTFRIED D. W. SCHMIDT.
