To all whom it concern:

' Be it known that I, RAYMOND L. BESELIN, a citizen of the United States, residin at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and tate of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smokers Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in smokers pipes, and the primary object thereof is to provide a smokers pipe having a mouthpiece in which the smoke passage will be arranged to open upwardly close to the roof of the smokers mouth in order that the saliva and other excretions of the mouth may not with facility enter the smoke passage.

It is a source of much objection with present construction of smokers pipes that these juices of the mouth are allowed to freely enter the smoke passage, through which they descend to the bowl and become saturated with the flavor of the tobacco and ash therein, after which they are again drawn into the mouth to the distaste of the smoker.

Another object of the present invention resides in providing an improvedpipe having a sump or trap for catching and preventing these objectionable juices from being drawn into the mouth, in which the sump is provided by a receptacle carried within the pipe stem and being removable therefrom for purposes of cleaning in order that the pipe may always be kept in sanitary condition.

A further object of the present invention lies in an improved connection between the mouthpiece and the stem of the pipe which permits the bowl to be rotated about the mouthpiece to bring it to any desired angle, and which enables the mouthpiece to be quickly detached giving immediate access to the sump or trap.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will in part be hereinafter pointed out and in part understood by those skilled in this art, the invention consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements hereinafter more particularly described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which: 7

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the bowl of the pipe and 2 the stem having the smoke passage 3 communicating at one end with the base of the bowl in the usual manner. At its upper end the stem 2 is provided with a recess 4 having flaring walls 5 at the top portion thereof, and an annular groove 6 at the upper end of said stem 2 communicating with the recess 4.

A sump receptacle 7, having outer flaring walls, 8, is arranged to be seated within the recess 4 in the stem 2 and to fit snugly therein with the flaring walls 8 close against the flared upper portion 5 of said recess. An annular flange 9 is provided at the marginal edge of the sump receptacle 7 and occupies the groove 6 when the receptacle is in place as shown in Fig. 1.

The receptacle 7 is perforated at its bottom, as indicated at 10, in order to communicate with the upper end of the smoke passage 3, and connected aboutthis perforation 10 is a trap tube 11 rising substantially centrally within the sump receptacle 7. The tube 11 forms an extension of the smoke passage through the central part of the sump and terminates at its upper end 12 short of the upper flanged end 9 of the receptacle; whereby the juices passing upwardly through the tube 11 will be caused to flow over the upper end 12 thereof and into the receptacle 7.

The mouthpiece is designated at 13 and is provided with a smoke passage 14; and a screw threaded recess 15 communicating with the smoke passage 14 and opening through the lower end of the mouthpiece. The reduced end 16 of a plug 17 is screw threaded and removably fits within the recess 15 as shown in Figs. 1 and 6. Adjoining the reduced threaded end 16 the plug 17 is formed with an annular shoulder 18 abutting against the lower end of the mouthpiece 13. This plug 17 is also formed with a frusto-conical outer wall 19 corresponding in shape to the interior of the flaring wall 8 of the sump receptacle 7, and as shown in Fig. 1 the plug 17 is adapted to snugly fit within the upper end of the receptacle 7 and to frictionally engage therewith for the purpose of connecting the mouthpiece 13 to the stem 2. The connection just described permits the ready detachment of the mouthpiece from the stem so as to give quick access to the interior of the receptacle 7 for purposes of cleaning, and if desired the receptacle 7 may be removed from the recess 4 by inserting a' sharp pointed instrument beneath the flange 9, by means of which it may be pried up to a position where the fingers grasp and withdraw it.

The connection provided by the plug 17 is devoid of screw threads and depends solely upon the frictional engagement with the flared walls 8 of the receptacle 7 to hold the parts together, and consequently the stem 2 and bowl 1 may be rotated about said plug 17 in order to bring the bowl to an inclined position. or even to an inverted position, without destroying the security of the connection. In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are shown the separated condition of the parts of the improved pipe. and it will be seen therefrom that this disassembly may be quickly carried out to enable the parts to be nested in a pipe case.

Now referring to the upper portion of themouthpiece 13, I provide the same with an enlarged tip 20 forming with the mouthpiece upper and lower teeth engaging shoulders 21 and 22. This tip 20 is of considerable vertical height with the object of bringing the upper end 23 thereof close to the roof of the smokers mouth. A smoke passage 24, communicating at its lower end with the passage 14, is made to pass substantially vertically through the tip 20 and opens out into the mouth through the top 23 very close to the upper shoulder 21. This construction places the open end of the passage 24 in the forward and upper part of the mouth out of the way of excretions and tends to avoid the entrance of saliva through the mouthpiece. In case any of this saliva gets into the passages 24 and 14 the same will descend through the plug 17 which also has a smoke passage 25 communicating with the passage 14 and an enlarged cavity 26 opening out from the lower end of the passage 25 and surrounding the upper end 12 of the trap tube 11. This cavity 26 will guide the juices descending through the mouthpiece out of the path of the open end 12 of the trap tube 11 and into the sump receptacle 7, where such juices will be allowed to accumulate until such time as the plug is removed and the receptacle cleaned. It will be appreciated from the foregoing that a pipe constructed according to this invention may be manufactured cheaply and will give improved service to smokers in avoiding nicotine and other objectionable juices getting into the smokers mouth.

I desire to be understood that various changes may be made in the constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts provided such changes fall within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a smokers pipe, a stem, a mouth piece. said stem having a smoke passage therein and having an enlarged recess in its inner end opening into the smoke passage, and concentric thereto, said mouth piece having a tapering plug adapted to fit in the recess of the stem and the plug provided with an opening in its outer end communicating with the passage through the mouth piece, and a thimble fitting removably in said recess of the stem and extending throughout the depth of the recess and provided with a flared open end into which said plug of the mouth piece is adapted to wedge for binding the thimble in the stem and for binding the plug in the thimble, said thimble provided with a trap pipe concentrically arranged therein and opening through the bottom thereof into communication with the smoke passage in the stem. and said trap pipe being of suflicient length to project into the opening of the plug whereby saliva passing through the mouth piece is adapted to flow from said plug into the thimble and smoke rising through the stem is adapted to pass freely from the end of said pipe into the mouth piece.
