UNITED STATES PATENT OEETQE.
THOMAS P. TAYLOR, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED ABDOMEN-COMPRESS AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Abdomen-Compress and Hose-Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined abdomen compress and hose supporters, but particularly relates to devices of this description which are equipped with waist bands for attaching the same around the person of the wearer, and has for its object to properly and automatically distribute the strain caused by the tightening of the waist bands so that the compress element will always adjust itself smoothly to the wearers person, and with this end in view my invention consists in the arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claims which conclude this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 illustrates a front elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of my improvement as it appears when in use on a corset, the latter being illustrated upon a human body, as shown in outline.
In my application, Serial No. 435,303, filed on even date herewith, I have claimed a structure suspended by an elongated means of support immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and I do not wish to'be understood herein as laying any broad claim to such construction, the end aimed at by my present invention being to secure Letters v Patent for a specific form of construction.
1 is an elongated resilient stiff sheet metal strip having at its upper end an opening 2 for attachment to a stud of a corset, and 3, 4, are adjusting straps secured to the bottom of the strip 1 in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by eyelets 5.
6 is a flexible pad or covering made of any cloth fabric which is of suitable shape and envelops the lower portions of the straps 3, 4, and strip 1, and has depending therefrom the usual hose supporter webbings 7, the upper lateral extremities of said pad be- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

ing secured to these straps in .any ordinary manner, as by eyelets 8, 9. This covering or pad 6 is extended upwardly as shown at 10 so as to envelop the greater portion of the strip 1 in order to prevent the latter from discoloring the corset or mutilating the trimmings thereof, and the upper part of this covering 10 is extended laterally to form bands 11, 12, to which are secured the free ends of the adjusting straps 3, 4.
13, 14, are waist straps one of which is provided with a buckle 15, the inner ends of which straps carry rings 16, 17, through which the straps 3, 4, pass loosely, so that it will be clear that the waist straps are attached to the adjusting straps by means of slidable connections.
Then the device is in position on the person of the wearer, the compress or pad 0 will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and when the waist straps are tightened the strip 1 will be forced upwardly thereby causing the same to be bowed outwardly so that its lower extremity will press firmly against the lower portion of the corset, thusI effecting an upward pressure against the abdomen and not only sustaining the latter but causing it to be confined between the lower part of the corset and the portion of the latter immediately below the waist line where the corset hugs the wearer closely.
The tension from the waist straps causes the compress to be pulled upwardly so that the line of strain will be controlled by both extremities of the straps 3, 4, and the ready slipping of these latter straps through the rings 16, 17, will cause these strains to be properly balanced, and, moreover, owing to the connections between the webbings 7 and the stockings, there will always be a downward pull exerted upon the compress, the result being that as the wearer moves about there can be no wrenching or displacement of the compress, since the straps 3, 4, will constantly be playing back and forth through the rings 16, 17.
Of course it will be clearly understood that the extensions 11, 12, are really a part of the straps 3, 4, and that therefore the inner ends of the latter might be secured directly to the upper part of the strip and therefore I do not wish to be limited to these extensions. Also, the strip might be made from celluloid, bone, horn, or, in fact, any substance that has the necessary stiff ness and resiliency.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A device of the character described, comprising a stiff resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end :to be secured to a .st-ud of a corset fastening, adjusting straps having their extremities secured respectively to the upper and lower ends of said strip, a flexible compress or pad carried by the lower portions of said straps and strip and having hose supporter webbings depending` therefrom, and waist straps having sliding connections with said adjustable straps, the length of said strip being such that when it is secured in position on the corset stud said compress will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central Jortion of the hypogastric region of the ab omen.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a stili resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to. be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, adjusting straps whose extremities are secured respectively to the lower and upper ends of said strip, a
flexible pad ofsuitable shape which envelops the lower portions of said strip and straps and is secured theretoand has depending therefrom hose supporter webbings, waist bands adapted to be secured together i by a suitable fastening device,.and rings carried by the inner ends of said bands and- THOMAS P.
