COMBINED ABDOMEN-COMPRESS AND HOSE-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed May 27, 1908. Serial No. 435,306.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Abdomen Compress and Hose Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to combined abdomen compress and hose supporters, and has for its object to provide a device of this description in which all the parts shall be of some soft flexible material except the vertically disposed elongated resilient strip by means of which the device is suspended from the stud of a corset clasp, and with this end in view my invention consists in the arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and then particularly pointed out in the claim which concludes this description.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation showing my improvement complete, Fig. 2 a similar view except that one face of the cloth covering or pad 1s removed and Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of my improvement as it appears when in use on a corset, the latter being illusprated upon a human body as shown in out- Similar numbers of reference denote like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In my application, Serial No. 435,303, filed on even date herewith, I have claimed a structure suspended by an elongated means of support immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and I do not wish to be understood herein as laying any broad claim to such construction, the end aimed at by my present invention being to secure Letters Patent for a specific form of construction.
1 is an elongated resilient stifi sheet metal strip having at the top an opening a for attachment to a stud of a corset, and 2, 3, are straps or tapes secured to the lower end of said strip by an eyelet b, the strap 2 being a waistband while the strap 3 carries a buckle 1 so that when the strip is suspended on a corset stud the band may be passed around the waist of the wearer and secured at a tension to said buckle.
5 is a cloth covering or ad which envelops the inner portions of said straps 2, 3, and has depending therefrom the usual hose supporter webbings 6. This covering is extended upwardly as shown at 7 so as to envelop the greater portion of the strip 1 in order to prevent the latter from discoloring the corset or mutilating the trimmings thereof, and at the upper portion this part of the covering 7 is secured to the strip by means of eyelets 8.
When the device is in position on the person of the wearer, the pad 5 will be suspended immediately in front of the lower central portion of the hypogastric region of the abdomen, and the tension of the waistband will thrust the strip 1 upwardly thereby bowing the same outwardly and causing its lower end to press firmly against the' lower portion of the corset, the effect of this being to press the abdomen upwardly so that it will receive the full benefits of the pressure from that portion of the corset below the waist line which closely hugs the person of the wearer.
The strain from the stockings to which the hose supporter webbings are secured in the ordinary manner will keep the pad down in position and will cause it to lie firmly against the lower portion of the corset so as to assist in sustaining the abdomen.
Instead of making the strip 1 from sheet metal it may be made from celluloid, bone, horn, or, in fact, any substance that has the necessary stiffness and resiliency, and I therefore do not wish to be limited in this respect.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described, comprising a stifi resilient elongated strip adapted at its upper end to be secured to a stud of a corset fastening, flexible waiststraps secured to the lower extremity of said strip whereby the device may be secured around the person of the wearer at a proper tension, a fabric covering of suitable shape which envelops the inner portions of said straps tion of the hypogastric region of the abdoand the main portion of said strip and is semen. 10 cured to the latter near its upper end, and In testimony whereof I afliX my signature hose supporter Webbings depending from in presence of tWo Witnesses.
said fabric covering, the length of said THOMAS P. TAYLOR. strip being such that when it is inposition Witnesses: on a corset said pad will be suspended im- F. WV. SMITH, J r.,
inediately in front of the lower central porg M. T. LONGDEN.
