JAR AND BOTTLE CLOSURE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 6,1907. Serial No. 460,923,
Patented June 9, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL L. Ronmenn, a
.citizen of the United States, residing at strength and elasticity to the same in their engagement with members on the vessel, as will be hereinafter described.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I show in the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the same as producing satisfactory results, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be variously disposed, and so it is to be understood that the lnvention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization of said instrumentalities.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cap member of a closure for a vessel embodying my invention. Fig 2 represents a side elevation of a vessel to which said capis applicable. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the cap partly broken-away and of the adacent portion with which the same engages. Simi sponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :-A designates the neck of a jar, on whose exterior, about the mouth thereof, are the flanges B, with intervening vertical throats C, the lower edges of said flanges being inclined or spiral as at D.
E designates the closure of the jar, the same consisting of; a cap formed of a top F, a side-rim G, and the lips H, the latter being inturned from both the side and bottom ed e of said rim and so disposed as to be capab e of passing-downwardly through the throats C, and when the cap is rotated to engage the edges D of the flanges B, as will be hereinafter agaln referred to. The rim G is continuous so as to completely encircle the neck of the ar and thus form a tight joint at the mouth thereof.
The lips H are deflected. upwardly in V- or U- shape, whereby they are, in a measure,
ar letters of reference indicate correcontact with and ride down said edges at right angles thereto and draw the cap firmly against the top of the jar and seat it thereon, thus hermetically closing and sealing the same. The limbs J are pieces continuous from the lower edge of the side rim turned inwardly and crimped upwardly, the resultant crowns thus having long bearing surfaces on the spiral edges of the flanges which will prevent slipping outwardly from said edges. Furthermore, the crimped portions of said limbs extend continuously inwardly from the lower edge of the rim, and so vastly increase the strength of the lips from end to end.
Especial attention is directed to the construction of the lips H, which, owing to their crimped or corrugated nature, possess increased strength, whereby they are not hable to be fractured or broken-off, while the cap is subjected to the tightening operation or held firmly in position, and the hmbs of the lips add resiliency to the same, so that while the pressure of the cap on the jar is not dead and injurious in its nature, the cap is tightly held on its seat.
The crimps or corrugations of the lips H extend into the side rim G so as to crimp or corrugate the latter at the places of connection of said lips with said rim, thus vastly strengthening said places whilethe lips re tain their resiliency.
The side-rim of the cap is scalloped or corrugated as, at L, thus vastly strengthening the same and affording means which are convenient and easy to the fingers in rotating the cap in applying andremoving the same, While also rendering said rim resilient in lateral direction, so as to yield to any inaccuracies in the sides of the flanges B.
The edges D are formed with scallops or notches M, into either of which the crowns of the li s may s rin so that said lips may take iiimer ho d of the flanges and be pre vented from improper reverse rotation, said hold, however, being overcome when su erior force is impartedto the cap to proper y rotate it.
' Having thus, described my invention, what I clalm as new and desire to ters Patent, is
l. A cap having a to a continuous side rim, and securing lips, t e latter being continuous from the lower edge of said rim and turned inwardly and having upwardly crimped portions forming crowns having exsecure by Lettended bearing surfaces to engage locking flanges on a jar or like receptacle, said crimped ortions extending continuously from said ower edge of the rim.
2. A ca formed of a top, a continuous corrugated side rim and securing lips, the latter being integral with and continued from the lower edge of said rim and extended inwardly and having upwardly crimped portions forming extended-inwardly projecting hearing 10 surfaces for engagement with cooperating locking flanges on a jar or like receptacle said crimped 1portions extending continuously from the ower edge of the rim.
