Be it known that I, Fnnnnmc lL'PLYMr- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVellesley, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closures for Milk-Jars and the like, of which, the following is a specification, reference belng had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to the disk like caps, covers or closures commonly used for sealing milk bottles, jars and the like. More particularly the invention relates to that class of closures, having attachments for fa-v cilitating the removal of the closures from their seats within the necks of the bottles or jars to which they have been applied.

The invention consists in a cap or closure having an extractor attachment which, in addition to other practical advantages, has that of applying the pull by which the cap or closure is withdrawn from its seat to the extreme edge of the disk at somewhat widely spaced-apart points of the edge itself, so asthereby to secure a more efficient action in'starting the progressive stripping of the circumferential edge of the disk from such seat. The attachment preferably is made of wire; its specific features are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the following description. and claims.

Having reference to the drawings; 1 1n Figs. 1 and 2 and 3 is the closure made of suitable material, and'2 is the handle portion of the extractor at the upper surface of the disk.

As indicated by the different viewsof the drawing, the general form of the loop into which the material of the extractor attach ment is bent in making such attachment is that of a hair-pin, 2'. 6., an elongated U. The closed bend or bight 3 of the loop and the adjoining portions of the limbs 4, 4, constitute the handle of the attachment, said handle lying normally at the top surface of the disk 1. edge, so as to lie flush with the adjoining portions of the edge, so that theperiphery of the cap-cover or closure a whole remains unbroken, and leakage of the contents of the bottle or to which the capcover or closure is applied is avoided. The continuations of the limbs 4, 4, extend inwardly from the edge of the disk, at the under surface of the disk, and at a suitable distance from the edge are engaged with the body, as by having their extremities driven upward into, and usually through, and clenched, as shown in the drawings, thereby positively and permanently uniting the attachment to th body. The form and proportions of the loop-like handle may be Varied. The limbs may be parallel with each other, as in Fig. 3, or may flare away from each other toward the edge of the disk, as in Figsl and 2.

A feature of the invention consists in a relative arrangement of the side-portions of the handle, at the upper surface of the disk, and the under portions of the limbs, and their clenched extremities, which causes the said under portions, and clenched extremisult if the side-portions of the handle shouldv lie over the said under portions, or upon the clenched extremities, and caps, covers, or closuresembodying this feature of the inven-' tion stack better and are better adapted for use in a capping machine.

i The invention is more particularly an improvement upon extractor attachments of the form and construction shown, described and claimed .in United States Letters Patent No. 886,014 granted April 28, 1908, for a closure for milk-jars and the like. It retains the essential principles and the good features of the said prior extractor attachment, while at the same time it has variousadvantages of its own. The cost of the material employed is less, the operations in forming and applying the attachment are simpler, and the punching and waste of material which occur in the case of the'attachment of the Letters Patent aforesaid are avoided. I am enabled to secure a handle of any desired width and extent of opening, and also of any desired width of spread at the edge of the disk, without the drawbacks incident to increasing the width of strip employed in making thejormer attachment.

What is claimed as the invention is 1. A bottle or jar closure comprising a thin flat disk provided-with an extractor attachment of loop shape having the bend of the loop located at the upper surface of the body and constituting an open handle, and having the limbs of the loop bent around the edge of the disk and clasping the same at somewhat widely spaced apart'points at the said edge, with the extremities of the limbs against the under surface of the disk and engaged therewith, whereby the lifting pull is applied to the disk edge at the said spaced apart points.

2. -A bottle or jar closure comprising a thin fiat disk provided with an extractor attachment of loop shape having its limbs bent around the edge of the disk and clasping the same, with the bend of the loop extended inward at the upper surface of the disk and constituting an open handle portion, andthe said limbs at the under surface of the disk engaged with the disk in such relation that the portions of the said limbs at one surface straddle those of the other.
