Application filed November 12, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, ALLEN F. WrLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Gloucester and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare the following to be asufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.
- This invention relates to that class of jars used for storing and preserving alimentary substances by hermetically sealing them from the air, and has for its object the easier and cheaper production of said jars, the greater certainty of tight sealing, and the greater durability thereof.
To this end the nature of this invention consists in an improved form of neck and cover, in combination with an improved construction of clamping device for securing the cover to the jar, as will more fully hereinafter appear. I
I will now proceed to fully and particularly describe the mode of making and using this invention, referring in so doing to the drawings annexed, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention involving only the neck and cover of the jar and parts contiguous to it the other parts of the jar are not shown in the drawings.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical'section thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the cover; Fig. 4, a plan of the invention Fig. 5, a plan of the cover; Figs. 6 and 7, respectively, plan and profile views of the clamp and Fig. 8, a plan of the gasket.

A represents the neck of a jar having aninclined or conical shoulder, B, below a cylindric rim or lip, O, and inclined projectionsD located below. the shoulder 13.
E is the cover, having a cavity, F, fitting loosely over the rim 0, and an edge, G, adapted to press into a gasket, H, laid upon the shoulder B around the rim 0. .Upon the upper and outer side of the cover E is formed a groove, J, the lower side of which is fiat and (Model.)
of such diameter as to be perpendicularly above the edge G of the cover E. The portion K of the top of the cover E above the groove J is of less diameter than that below the groove J, and is beveled upon the upper side, as shown at L.
M is a clamping-ring, made preferably of wire bent in the form of a circle, fittingin the groove J, and having jaws N bent outwardly, thence downwardly, and thence inwardly, so as to embrace the cover E and the inclined projections D on the neck A of the jar and force the cover firmly down upon the gasket or washer H without subjecting the bows or rims of the clamp to any strain. The ends of clamp M are bent into a hook, O, and eye P. After the clamp M is sprung over the part K of the cover E into the groove J, the ends 0 and P are engaged in each other and bent so that the clamp cannot be readily separated from the cover E, and forms a projection which facilitates the turning of the clamp M. When the jar has been filled, it is closed and hermetically sealed by placing the gasket H upon the shoulder B, applying the cover E, passing the jawsNbetween the'projections D, and then turning the ring or clamp M, so that the jaws engage underthe projections D and v draw the cover so that the edge G impinges upon a complete circle of the gasket H, the
projections O and P affording a facility for turning the clamp.
I am aware that jars having inclined projectionsupon the neck have been made and used in combination with a clamp encircling portions of cover of such jars, also that clamps have been used for binding covers to glass jars which were secured to the covers by hooks engaging in the rim thereof. None of these do I claim. In none of these was the pressure made upon the rim of a cover having an edge adapted to indent the gasket; nor was the cover secured to the clamp by the means employed in my invention.
By using the clamp of the form shown and described I secure a firm pressure directly over an impinging edge resting upon the gasket, and the clamp possesses great strength in the part receiving the clamping strain, the projection formed by the union of the ends of the Wire forming the clamp affording a conven- ,2, The combination of the clamp M, having. ends bent into a hook, O, and eye P, and hooks N N, as shown and described, with the grooved jar-cover E, having a projecting edge, G, gasket H, and jar-neck having helical or .inclined projections D, as set forth.
