No. 887,610. PATBNTED MAY 12, 1908. W. & S. BPSTEIN.
SKIRT.
APPLIUATION FILED JAN. 10.1908,
A TTOHNEYJ WILLIAM EPSTEIN AND SAMUEL EPSTEIN, OF NEW 'YORK,N. Y.
SKIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed January 10, 1908. Serial No. 410,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Wnmmn Ers'rnnv, a citizen of the United States, and SAMUEL lCPs'1E1N,-a subject of the Czar of llussia, both residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of .ent sized waists. 4o
New York, have invented a new and Improved Skirt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a new and improved skirt or petticoat, provided with a waistband having an cxpansible and contractible portion, arranged in such a manner that the waistband readily fits dilferent sized waists, arid atthe same time insures a proper hang of the garment.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fullydescribed hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the inventio is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improve ment as applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same, showing the waistband opened up and part thereof broken out, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same, on the line .'i-3 of Fig. 2.
ln skirts or pctticoats as now manufactured, it is necessary for the manufacturer to provide and the dealer to keep in stock, a large number of skirts of the same pattern and length but of different waist measure, in order to properly lit customers having differ- In order to render the waistband of the skirt adjustable or elastic, various dcvices,havc-heretofore been proposed, vjsuch devices using mostly elastic means in varions ways, but invariably the result is not quite satisfactory, and defects, notably improper hang of-the garment, are usually the. result. hi the improved skirt, hereinafter described in detail, use is made of an elastic band or webbing, completely concealed by the fabric. material of which the body of the garment is made, thus requiring no matching of the color of the elastic webbing with that of the body of the skirt, and the latter is provided with a placket at one side or at the hip portion, thus allowing the use of an elastic webbing extending uninterrupteflly clear across the back of the garment from one side thereof to the other, to insure a proper hang of the garment, irrespective of whether the garment is used by persons having waists of widely different sizes.
As shown in the drawings, the body A of the skirt or petticoat is provided with a waistband B and a placket C arranged at one side of the body A and extending the usual distance downward from the waistband B, the placket C having a suitable fastening device I) at the waistband B for closing the said placket.
formed of an elastic band or webbing B ini closed by the body material A forming a continuation of the upper gathered portion A of the body A, the said lnclosm prtlon A" being secured to the elastic we) mg or band B by longitudinal rows of stitches E,. at the time the said webbing or band B is ina stretched condition. It is evident that when the garment is manufactured and the elastic band or webbing B" is held in a stretched position and the portion A in a non-gathered Icondition; incloses the said webbing, and the two are united by the longitudinal rows of stitches, and when the sewing operation is completed and the elastic band B" is released, then in contracting it forms the upper rear portion A of the body A into gathers and also the portion A, the gathers of the latter, owingto the numerous rows of stitches E, being small in comparison to the gathers of the upper )ortionA. a
From the foregoing it will be seen that by having the slit at one side or the hip portion of the garment, it is possible to make the entire rear or back portion ofthe waistband elastic, at the same time producing the gathered rear portion 'A in contrast to the non-gathered front portion A of the body A.
It will also be noticed that by this arrangcand a waistband,
- the sair to throughout its length while the elastic' By having theelastic webbing covered by the body material A", the webbing is conr pletely concealed and the entire waistband appears as of the same inatcrial as the body A, and hence. it is not necessary to selecta webbing as that of the bod Lt, and 'lori'nity of the body A and waistband B is maintained and the waistbaml is rendered strong and durable.
Having thus described our claim as new and desire to, secure by Letters Patent:
1'. A skirt or petticoat, comprising a body, the front portion of the waistband being inelastic and secured to the front portion of thesaid. body, the entire rear )ortion olbthe waistband being elastic and iorineld of an elastic. band, the entire rear up )er portion of the said body-inclosing elastic band and being secured thereband is in a stretched condition. 1
2. A skirt or petticoat, comprising a body, and-a Waistband, the trontportion or the waistband being inelastic and. secured to the front portion ol the said body, the entire rear portion of the \\-'aistband being elastic and torn 'ed of an elastic rear up )erportion of the. said body inclosing the said elastic banrhand longitmli'nal rows of stitches securing the said band'inclosing portion to the said elastic band while thelz'1tter is in a stretched condition.
3. A skirt or petticoat, comprising a body,
and a waistband, the front portion of the of the same color and texture the desired um- 5 invention, w e
band, the entire l i l l r.
names to this specification in the.
waistband being inelastic and secured to the front portion of the said body, the entire rear portion oi the naistband being elastic and l rnied of an elastic band, the entire rear upper portion of the said bodyinclosing the saiu elastic band, and longrtudnial rows of stitches securin thesaid band-inclosing portion to 'the said elastic band while the latter is in a stretched condition, the said up per trout portion of the said body being plain or non-gathered, and theentire upper rear portion of the said body adjacent to the said elastic waistband portion being gathered 4. A skirt or petticoat, comprising abodx having a placket at one side thereof, and a waistband consisting of a front and a rear portion, the front portion being inelastic and secured to the upper l'ront portion of the said body, beginning at the placket and reaching to the opposite side. of the body, the said rear portion of the waistband being formed of an elastic band, and an integral extended por tion of the rear of the said body, the said extended bod) portion inclosing the said elastic band and being secured thereto throughout the length of the elastic band and while the latter is in astretclued condition.
In'testixnony whereof we have signed our presence of two subscribing witnesses.
