\VILLIAM PENN CHALFANT ADAMS, OF OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT J. PRICKMAN, OF OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON.
GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 703,751, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed November 13, 1901. Serial No. 82,109. (No model) To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM PENN CHAL- FAN'I ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olympia, in the county of Thurston and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to body-garments, and has for its primary object to provide a shirt with which suspenders may be used, the suspenders being worn beneath the shirt and at the same time being attached to the waistband of the trousers lying outside the shirt, the points of attachment to the trousers being also concealed from View.
It is Well known that the present fashion of dispensing with a waistcoat in summer ren-' ders the use of suspenders in the conventional manner objectionable from their nnsightli- 2o ness, though many men are unable to dispense with the same; and it is the object of the present invention to overcome this objection by permitting the use of suspenders and at the same time completely concealing them from View.
My invention also embodies certain other minor novel details of construction, as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front perspective view of' the trunk ofa human body, showing my improved shirt thereon, the waistbandor belt thereof being partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a 3 5 similar View taken from the rear. Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear perspective view of the shirt. Fig. 4 is a still larger detail vertical sectional View takenthrough the shirt, the waistband thereof, and the trousers. 40 Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views.
In the said drawings the reference-nun] eral ldenotes the body of the shirt, the same having sewed thereto a waistband or belt 2, the
line of sewing being along the upper edge only of said belt and said belt extending around the body of the-garment and terminating in two loops 8 at the rear thereof for the attachment of an elastic coupler hereinafter to be described. Located in the front :back.
line of attachment of the belt 2 thereto are two horizontal slits or apertures 4, the same being so positioned that when the garment is worn they will register with the front suspender-buttons on the trousers of the wearer and will be of substantially the Width of the space betweensaidpairs of buttons. In the back the garment is also provid ad with two horizontal slits 5, underlying the belt 2 in a similar manner and each adapted to register with one of the rear Suspender-buttons on the trousers.
In use the suspenders are first placed loosely over the shoulders, then the shirt is put on, and finally the trousers, the tails of vthe shirt being tucked into the trousers in the usual manner. The waistband 6 of the trousers carrying the Suspender-buttons 7 may thus be positioned and concealed beneath the "belt 2, when by bringing the ends of the suspenders 8 through the slits 4 and 5 in the shirt they may be attached to the buttons 7 in the usual manner. It will thus be seen that the suspenders will perform their usual function and yet be completely concealed from "iew.
The belt 2, covering the Waistband 6 of the trousers, will have the appearance and perform the function of the independent belt 8o now commonly worn, the necessary adjustment being provided for by the coupler at the (Shown inFig. This coupler preferably consists of an elastic strap 9, carrying at each end a buckle 10, the said strap being looped back on itself at each end by the engagement of the buckles 10 with the body thereof, and thus providing loops 11 for the reception of the safety-pins 12, that in turn are connected with the loops 3 in the ends of belt 2. I prefer to employ this double-buckle construction, so that when an adjustment is made both buckles may be shifted and be kept equidistant from the median line of the back of the wearer, thus preserving the symmetry of the belt. The coupler is made wholly detachable from the belt 2 by means of the safety-pins in order that the former may be removed when the garment is to be laundered.
I have shown in Fig. 1 the garment open of the garment and immediately below the 1 only part Way down the front; but it will be understood that when my invention is to be applied to a shirt open all the way down the front the belt 2 will be divided at this point, as it is in the back, and a connecting-buckle of any suitable construction provided, it being preferable that the same be made detachable, as is the coupler at the back. So, also, with a closed-front shirt the belt effect may, ifdesired, be heightened by attaching to the belt 2 at the front a false buckle.
I prefer to locate the belt 2 on the garment between two and four inches below the known waist-line, so as to give a fullness to the garment when worn.
The advantage obtained by making the coupler elastic is that a yielding belt is protached waistband or belt to permit the passage therethrough of the ends of an underlying suspender and their attachment to the suspender-buttons on the trousers-waistband.
2. A body-garment, having a waistband or belt permanently attached thereto along its upper edge only and adapted to receive thereunder the waistband of the trousers, said belt separated at its back and provided with an elastic coupler uniting its ends.
3. A body-garment, having a waistband or belt permanently attached thereto along its upper edge only and adapted to receive thereunder the waistband of the trousers, said belt separated at its back and provided with a detachable elastic coupler uniting its ends.
4. A body-garment, having a waistband or belt permanently attached thereto along its upper edge only and adapted to receive thereunder the waistband of the trousers, said belt separated at its back and provided with a detachable and adjustable elastic coupleruniting its ends.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
